Thread: Pure Crafters can't become Jedi alone I take it?
Bingo! And I definitly understand that's how the game works at the moment. I hope that they do change it so that crafters don't have to rely on fighters to attain FS - I think it is an interesting aspect of the game and would be fun to persue, but after having just spent the time working my way up to Master Artisan and Master Shipwright, I really don't want to drop those skills just yet. So I guess that means no FS for me for a while yet. I mean, I appreciate the people who are willing to help with their combat characters, but like Chickenspank said, I see attaining FS as a personal achievement. Something that I'd have to work at to get to, not sit idly by while someone else does the work for me. Thanks to everyone for their responses and for not automatically going flame on heh It's nice to be able post in a gaming forum and not get attacked by the rest of the community for asking a question as I've seen done in other games!

From what I can tell you are not happy with the fact that you get no sense of accomplishment by becoming FS through the pure crafter route. You have to rely on someone else so it's not really like you are becoming FS, someone else is doing it for you.
you could trade 15 dollars a month to SOE for an alt...

I agree completely and am in the process of turning my crafting character into a combat character at this time - throwing away the business I have built up and the money have invested to some degree for theability to gain FS slots. There is no way around it with the current design.
THis game is currently built around the idea that grinding a skill is so trivial for people that asking them to switch careers for a bit is no biggie - and it keeps them playing longer and buying more subscription time which in the end, is SOEs main concern. Last night I got through most of the Medic boxes for Doctor in a few hours, by sometime tonight I will be a Novice Doctor and start working on the 4xxx line. At the same time I am raising up Rifleman, although I may go TKM/Sword - I can't decide - because provided you can get into a group doing bols on dantooine it just takes time, and not that much of it. The higher up you get the less time it takes too.
When I am done my FS grinding and become a Padawan I will most likely return to being a crafter and enjoy my 2nd slot. Its possible I will pursue Jedi as it looks kind of fun but there are so many people playing them its stupid right now. A second character slot is a thing to *die for* though - I would trade anything to be able to have an alt.
So my only current interest in FS is getting an alt slot since there is no other way for some stupid reason. Then I can enjoy having a crafter character and a combat character both. Or 2 crafters since combat gets dull fast, I dunno.
SO while I agree that its a shame there is no non-combat way to become a Jedi, I don't expect anything to change because the current design is intended to keep you grinding, and therefore subscribed. SOE is not interested in better gameplay

lol, very true.

plus to add there are only 4 crafting trees to my memory, so to unlock you need 2 combat trees as well.
or else u aint a jedi..
factor in that you would be the easiest target for any bh to kill with a catapult if you were just a crafter and had no combat/defense.
ione compensation is the 2nd character you are given as padawan, that char can be a pure crafter if you like, so you can still follow the crafting profession
crafters have been nerfed sooo badly, i have escorted so many of em just so they can empty a harvy or collect supplies.
this aspect does need looking at and hopefully it will be soon, the devs forgot that not everyone is a fighter
The only thing a crafter has to have help with in the village is the initial onslaught of the sith. You can keep crafting and turning in the exp for things you craft for crafting fs exp, and you can turn in your merchant exp for senses. You will have to take up novice medic for some trials, others just take survey or crafting. Your jedi won't have the most elite fightingbonuses at the end, but if you are a good crafter, your saber should be 2nd to none
This is a MMORPG, and it is for a reason, you need help to do most things. Pure combat types would have a hard time without weapons or healers, especially in phase 4 of the village. We all need each other, get a good, diverse base of friends (I am talking about skillsets here, not species or body shape), and you'll be fine. IF you are expecting the Sith to visit, join a CL80 group. You get CL80 status so at least you don't get insta-incapped. If you can't be around combatfriends at any particular point, go do something in space or in a city like Coronet where they won't show until you can get a couple CL80 friends to hang out with you....
I'm CL5 Master Artisan + Master Weaponsmith + Master Armorsmith, and going for the 4 crafting lines, plus the surveying line in sense, plus ranged defence (thought it might help a bit when visiting harvs!), also got a a bit of scout, and medic, for the senses xp, doing surveying is way too slow.
During the double xp week I did a lot of grouping with my guild, and only acquired about half of one line of the FS skills, as what with being low CL the xp acquired was real low, a guild mate CL 80, was also grinding for FS XP, and managed to get enough XP for 3 lines for the FS skills, and all I achieved was half, in the same time!! I was getting about 1800 XP per kill (for CL5), he was getting about 14000 XP per kill (for CL 80)
I used my token respec to shift scout and medic around to raise the xp caps, but wish I dropped my crafting skills, grinded combat, then afterwards used the respec to get the crafting skills back. I think grinding a combat profession to get higher CL, and then grinded XP to convert, would have been quicker, than struggling trying to grind in a CL 80 group
