THis is a post to try to clear some of the questions that are being asked over and over again. All of this is from my experience so it will vary slighty for everyone.
After completing my sixth treeof FS skills, this is how it went:
1. old man came after server reset and jumping shuttle to a PC (make sure to sit in one place so u dont miss him). Took less than 24 hours after finishing sixth branch.Doesnt matter what planet u are on, but the mission will then spawn on whatever planet The Old Man visited u on. I was on Dantooine at Sweetwater when he came 2nd time and my Melichae mission spawned about 1000m south of Mining Outpost. If u die, or u get disconnected it seems to restart the mission in same place.
And an extra tip, bring a couple rifleman and a doc forrezzingthey will make the Melichae fightMUCH easier.
2. After defeating Melichae, was given WP to force shrine. After completing 8 of the padawan trials, I constructed my lightsaber and was given rank of initiate. After 8 more was given title of Padawan, a robe and a second character slot.
3. The only Padawan trial I had much trouble with was the falumpaset trial. FInding 20 ofthem can be a beeyotch. Look south of Keren on Naboo.
4. If possible try to grind out the 20k for novice LS before u get padawan so u wont be hunted, your dmg/speed etc., does not change until u get that first skill.
Good luck!

Since we're on the subject, how long do the padawan trials take about? I mean is it 20 minutes a mission, or longer? or are they so varied that you can't really say? I'm not looking to rush through, but I can usually only play about an hour a day and am just curious what i'm in for...

so you are not a padawan YET? even though the title of your post says that (actually its misleading in the fact that what im going to read is a guide all the WAY TO padawan).
can you drop your FS boxes?
will your extra slot be FS or will your main char be your future jedi?
at paddy do you surrender all skills to grind pad?
i hope you intend on answering ALL questions (especially because you are asking people to look here before making new threads).

I finished the Mellichae encounter Sunday night, and started right in on the trials, got 6 of them done in about 2 hours. Did 7 more the next night in about 3 hours, and then finished them up last night. Most of the trials themselves are basic missions, that can be done in about 10 minutes. The real time sinks are travelling to and from the force shrines, and then waiting on the shuttles to get around. If your server happens to have player cities with shuttles near shrines, you can get through them pretty quickly. If you have to run 2-3k or more back and forth to shrines it can take a while. Your ability/good fortune in finding the critters you need to kill will also impact your time for those missions.
Overall I'd say it's comparable to running Jabba's or the Rebel Theme Park.

I have four padawan trails left, my post was merely to summarize my experience to this point and share what i have gathered from the FAQ's people dont seem to read. So the answers to your questions....
Once u hit padawan u cannot drop your FS skills. However, during the trials u have the option of quitting.
Your extra slot is NOT fs, u will have to grind with him again to get him jedi.
You do not have to surrender all your skills at paddy.
The trails themselves are fairly simple, just involve a lot of traveling between planets.
Hope that helps!!

I was able to find all the creatures to kill fairly easily, and did eac of those trials in under an hour. You don't need to grind into ranger just to find 20 sludge panthers or falumpasets...lol
