What is require to unlock the alternate character? Is it unlocked by merely becoming "glowy" or do you have to become a jedi?

Much obliged. *bow*
So, basically, it takes a long time to unlock an alt, right? And those of us with dreams of having all 16 characters 2 per server on 8 different servers are going to be thoroughly disappointed. *sigh*

Yep. But it depends on your definition of "long time." At a minimum, it's 18 weeks just for working your way through the single quests in the three-week phases of the Hidden Village. By comparison, getting the "glow" is brief, as is doing the eight Padawan Trials.

So...how long then to unlock an alt? A couple weeks of grinding the glowy badges + the padawan trials?

It's more like months vs. weeks. The glowy badges can be completed in a matter of a week or so, and that's taking your time and also assuming you're an elite combat prof. Once you get to the village, it's a minimum of 18 weeks to unlock the 6 skill branches required to fill skill boxes and then it can be weeks or months to grind out the required xp to convert to FS XP to train in all 24 of the skill boxes. (6 complete branches) For those starting the process now, plan on this being a LONG TERM goal. (i.e. months)
Not to the Padawan trials yet so can't comment there, but I think that's back to a week or so of gaming based on some of the reading I've done.

The rule of thumb passed on to me from my in-game guru was "six months of hard gaming." Supposedly, that was the target the devs were shooting for.

I guess technically you could do the Village in 15 weeks, if by the time your 6th phase comes around you have all your FS XP grinded and you just need to do the quest.

It should take this long:
1 week - 1 month to get glowy
15 weeks 3 days server up time to unlock 6 FS branches
Now..as for grinding FS experience.
A single elite prof (say swordsman) capping his swords xp at 900k (plus 90k Combat) will convert into approx 60k force sensitive xp.
Each branch requires 1,225k xp (not including novice) which means 20+ trips to the village.I can cap swords xp in 1.5 - 2 hours...depends on how dedicated you are.
Soooo....if you played for 2.5 hours per day, you would be able to keep up your XP conversion as you unlock branches.
I'm not sure how long it takes to do the Padawan trials, as I'm still waiting to unlock 2 more branches ( I have the xp saved up...lots of playing)
If you grind with grenades, It will take a quarter the time...and cost quite a bit more.
In the end, grinding FS to keep up with Unlocks, it would take you a minimum of 17-18 weeks.

Wow! Thanks for the info. I guess I need to make sure all the characters I really want to play are the ones I start with.

That's one crazy dream
Bear in mind that all the time quotes above do not factor in you taking out any time to actually enjoy yourself playing the game - these are pure "nose to the grind" figures you are getting. Trust me, you will most likely get thouroughly fed up with the constant farming of mission spawns at some point and take time out to PvP, attempt missions, help friends, explore JTL etc...
So add some more time to all the quotes above
Sorry to be putting yet more dampeners on your ambition

Concerning the Padawan trials... While it it true that you could do them in a day or two, this is not the recommended approach. Once you get your training lightsaber, (about half way through the trials) the consensus is you should get your first 20k of Jedi xp so you can fill your novice Lightsaber box immediately upon reaching Padawan. Before you complete the trials, you cannot be placed on the Bounty Hunter terminals. If you reach padawan and don't have a first gen lightsaber, and you are killed by a BH, it's going to be a very long grind to get out of that negative xp hole using a training lightsaber. It's best to spend a week or two as Jedi initiate and learn how to use the lightsaber and get into some good habits concerning visibility rules, then to jump right to Padawan in two days. Just my two credits.
