You should really read the FAQ.

It sounds like you're trying to do more then one mission. Since you don't seem to know let me give a quick explanation.

The village operates on phases of which there are four (4). Each phase lasts approximately three weeks (21 days). You have these three weeks to perform one task from one NPC only. Once you speak to an NPC and "sign up" for their task, you will not be able to "sign up" for another task thru another NPC. You must wait for the current phase to finish and the next phase to begin. Then you may speak to another NPC for their tasks.

I've read numerous FAQs, and spent almost 2 hrs on this forum reading old topics, etc. All that information is kind of tough to cram in. (4 phases, 4 trees, initiate, padawan, learn this, unlearn that, etc)

Anyway, I haven't taken a quest from anyone yet. My datapad has no uncompleted quests in it. I purposely did not do anything when I got the the Village based on the fact I don't have enough info on what I'm really doing. If I did, I'd end up learning ranged accuracy or something that basically does not help out with Jedi at all.

So, even with your answer, and all the FAQs, my question still hasn't been asnwered. All people still point me to learn the melee speed tree, I have no other options.

I don't know what server you are on but Dageerin teaches Melee Speed in Phase 2 so it may be that your server hasn't gone to Phase 3 yet which is where Dageerin teaches Ranged Defense. Btw, its 6 Trees for initiate so you have to go through 4 phases then overlap 2 more.

I'm on Starsider. I just want to know why I'm not being given an option as to what to learn, but being forced (apparently) to learn melee.

You are still in phase 2 of the village. R. defense dosent unlock until phase 3. You are forced to take the quest given upon each phase, not as to what you "want" to do. Oh, and if you are going jedi you should REALLY take the melee speed. Great to have once you start on jedi..

I recently got into The Village, spoke with the man and converted all my banked XP to FS xp.

I learned Combat Prowess and Enchanced Reflexes.

I'd like to learn Ranged Defense I, Heightened Reflexes, as I had enough banked XP to go ahead and learn it.

But, my problem is, everyone I speak to directs me to Dageerin, who says he'll teach me in Melee.

I've already tried to talk to the Captain, who teaches ranged, but he too directs me to Dageerin.

So, are you forced by default to learn melee first? Or am I not doing something right?

/slowy getting it.

Do any of those FAQs list what can be learned, during what phases?

Does this mean say, phase 1 for example, I can only learn crafting or something? What if I don't want to learn that?

I've looked through that, but here's the thing.

I'm being FORCED to learn melee, no other people will talk to me. They all say go to Dageerin, who offers to give me a quest, and learn melee.

Elder: Go to the Captain for combat

Captain: You want to learn Combat? Great! First go to Dageerin

Dageerin: I'll teach you melee.

Other people say they could choose who to talk to, and learn whatever skill they wanted to.

I have enough XP to learned Ranged Defense I, but I can't unlock it. I can only unlock melee, which I don't have enough XP for.

So, no one knows how to resolve this???

You can unlock without needing any of the XP to learn the blocks. An unlock is just that, an unlock. After it's unlocked you can pump XP into it or not and just have it sit there empty. You can unlock all 16 branches if you want and never convert or spend a single point of FS XP.

The only way to resolve it is to wait for your server to switch phases then Dageerin will allow you to unlock the Ranged Defense Tree

Every phase there are 4 quests available. You can only pick one per phase to actually do.

In phase 2 (now) you can choose:

Melee Speed - Dageerin

Vehicular Control - Whip

Survey - Eozlin

Technique - Quharek

Phase 2 will only last a little longer, so it may not be possible to do melee speed, as that quest takes 3 days minimum.

Once the phase changes, you can choose one of these quests.

Melee Accuracy - Captain Sarguillo

Ranged Defense - Dageerin

Luck - Eozlin

Experimentation - Quharek

Does that clear up your choices a little? There are no ranged skills available to unlock in phase 2, but once the phase changes to 3, you could get ranged defense from Dageerin.
