Thread: How to make Fencer equel to other skills!
This thread is for posting idea's for what would be a good way of balancing Fencer so that it would be worth it for people to actually use and learn Fencer. If these were implimented people would put down their blasters and use a sword.
1. I think we all agree that a Fencer should be able to use Dual Swords. One in each hands as they progress to master or a long the way.
2. Blaster Deflect: This skill would allow a Fencer to Deflect a shot away from him or back at the user that fired it. This would be a good way toblock incoming fire a lot of times so that it isn't mismatched. The further the character shooting at you is, the easier it is to block making it esential to attack up close. Make it so that if a user is further than 25m it will be a 100% block witht he exception that the Fencer cannot be moving while he deflects the shot.
3. Lower the xp needed to get Master Fencer. The Brawler skills are the hardest to get XP for since the ability to die is so much greater than someone who can run around with a gun and just kite giant xp targets along.
4. Give Fencers the ability to craft better modules for their swords or create a sharpen sword craft at a general station. This would raise the attack rate up while trading attack for deterioration. This would be a fair trade. If a Fencer could sharpen his sword to raise the power people would dig that, even if it is for a short time until the blade wears dull again.
How it would work: Fencers would have a Sharpening kit. You would sharpen the blade raising it 10-15% of attack. Then as your deterioration on the sword goes down, the attack power would lower also. Kinda like real life. When it get's back to where it was normal you would maybe have an overall lower attack than you did before.
Say you had an attack of 50-150. You sharpen it to 60 -175 with your deterioration rate is at 1000. Till your deterioration rate goes to 900 you get that attack bonus. When 900 is reached the sharpening wears off and your attack is say 45-147. Does this sound like a good idea?
Anyways add to the list of ways you think Fencer could be worked on to make it even or atleast comperable to Blaster based skills sets.
blaster deflecting is a jedi only skill, i was thinking about shields. Like those gungans energy shields, you can deflect some blaster bolts with those untill they run out of energy or something and then you have to recharge them with for example batteries.
and i like the 2 sword idea, its a choice to use a sword in both hands and so no shield, or a shield.
ideas ?
Interesting ideas there KahnLord.
I would have to agree of course with dual wielding. That option would be great to have.
The sharpening of the sword is also a neat concept. Its not that different from using weapon powerups or getting the weapon sliced. But I think if the idea was worked with enough it make it.
I'm not a big fan of the blaster deflection either. That's the job of a jedi. I think it should be more focused on blaster dodging and such. We have a footwork tree, and though with all brances of the fencer tree we have ranged defense, but perhaps add in a ranged avoidance skill. We get dodge as a whole for melee and ranged attacks, but with the added ranged dodge, there would be a bit more defense against being kited.
Dual swords is a cool idea, but I'd rather see the base things we have get tweeked before they decide that letting us hold another sword would balance us out completely. Without looking at the core of a fencer's skills, we would just be the same old fencer plus a sword. Once all that gets ironed out, hell yeah give us two swords ![]()
Interesting idea on the sharpening, though you would have to take into account that slicing is similar in respects to increasing atributes while also increasing decay.
Equipment is a major issue in my mind, most notedly the availability of other types of decent weapons. The list of weapons for us, in order of average usefullness, weakest to "best" is as follows: Survival Knife, Dagger, Sword, G. Whatever Baton (hehe), Ryyk/Vibro, Rantok/Stun Baton. The only reasonI list Rantok and stun as top is due to Rantok's supposed AR2, and Stun damage from the baton. The dead horse has been beaten in regards to this, I know, but would be nice to have some range...heck, at least make rantok craftable, would be nice ![]()
Skill wise, I've thought the fencer to be the middle ground between TKA and Swordsmen. Where swordsmen shine in raw damage, TKA shine in speed, fencers should be an amalgam of the two. Not greater in regards to the primary skill of one or the other, but an even combination of speed and damage. Put it in this light, you take a TKA, Swordsman, Pikemanand Fencer, all master, give them a base weapon, say 50-150, 2.0 speed weapon, no AR, just base damage and all that. TKA attacks generic target, gets lower damage yield per hit, but at an alarming speed. Swordsman attacks the same generic target, high damage yield at a slower rate. Pikeman, same deal, Titanic damage, but very slow. Fencer does the same, should see an even balance between the damage and speed. Obviously there is special moves and what pools are hit by each class to take into account. As it stands, TKA seems to be an all pool attacker, Pikes are action, Swordsmen are mind and Fencers health. Not saying I have the answers, just feel these are what needs to be examined before adding anything new in.
As always, this is just a 2 cred post, I absolutely want to see what other ideas you folks have!

I would like to see a primitive range knockdown/subdual weapon. Like the Bola the Ewoks were using on RotJ. Good range and will take care of the runners until you can get up close and personal. Toss it, watchem trip, then saunter up and smack them on the noodle for awhile. Melee gets a new, single useweapon that can temporarily offset the range advantage if the toss is successful. Bolas are realistically used to hunt big game. Big hairy smelly animals. I'm sure they will be able to handle a Rodian with a pop-gun running away. Of course, something like this would need certification so some noob won't use it and end up wrapping the thing around his own neck. I would much rather have that then a pair of pretty technicolor blades.

Psst Rook, you forgot the Curved Sword. Slot that in above the Gaderffi Baton (Gaffi stick). Rantok isn't AR2, it's AR0 like the rest of our non-vibroblade weapons. Stupid rumors. -_-
Aside from that, yeah, blaster deflection is more jedi-ish than I'd want Fencers to get. I'm definitely in favor of dual-wielding blades...
But how about this. I've seen this idea being tossed around here and there as a psuedo-solution. If the devs are so focused on making brawler skills < ranged in PvP and other things (which is at least moderately understandable), why can't they reduce the skill point cost for the Brawler Tree and any other profession that works off of Brawler skills? If they admit that the skills are worth less, why not make them cost less?
Harhar! Thanks Haschel, I must admit, didn't even think of curved probly because I have yet to see one on Radiant lol. Most weaponsmiths just churn out Vibroblades and Ryyks. And I was just going with the rumor on Rantoks as well ![]()
I do agree, if we are by design considered the huge disadvantage in PVP in comparison to marksmen/ranged, at least reflect that in our tree! Hehe ![]()

I don't think we should have the ability to deflect blaster bolts because they would melt the swords. Only a lightsaber or one of thoughs shields the gungans used in Ep1 can do that. However I think we should get the shields it would make PvP more fair and make it so range doesn't own us. I also really like the idea of getting two swords at once that would be really nice.
I also believe there should be more weapons out there. There aren't enough different types of swords out there in my opinion. What ever happened the the blastsaber I read about in the Rogue Squad books that would be a really cool sword to have. I just generally believe there aren't enough different types of weapons out there in the game.
Yeah I believe a sheild would be good. Hey a sheild or two swords... come on now. Only problem is that the Dev's, SOE, and everyone else have given up on us loan Fencer as I have not seen anyone from the team come in here in the last week since the patrch to help or comment on problems.
Also I think we should have an option to throw knives if we wish without retrieval making a more Martial Artist feel. Maybe this could go in Teras Kasi or something. We need Ninja's.
Also why can't we pick to be a Pirate in this game? There are Pirates so there should be a Pirate class.
Pirate could be one of those profession names that Maknor brought up.
http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=fencer&message.id=2146
Pirate <space pirate> could be a combonation of fencer, pistoleer, and smuggler. Granted you can't master all 3 of those, but a certain combonation of those professions skills. Maybe Creature Handler so you can get a pet vynock to sit on your shoulder.
His idea would bring about some great names for different combonations of skillsets. Swashbuckler for those with entertainment skills/ fencer/ bountyhunter. A Hero type with medic/scout/ brawler skills. Demolition Expert with commando/architect/ skills. Chef/fencer combo would allow for a sushi chef, and a Spy would have Smuggler/Image Designer, Chiropratchor Medic/TKA...
Theres alot out there that isnt being talked of yet. I hope this is something that might catch thier eye as a good idea for later on.
This fencer board brings up great ideas I don't se anywhere else...keep up the brainstorming! ![]()
aah **edit** man the shield idea was mine
i came up with it first
those gungan shield are great, we could make them rechargeable with batteries or something. They cannot take endless damage afcourse. Though pistol can shoot endless without having to recharge..... and it would be nice to have for example a cut down version of burst running, burst running for short periods but for less costs that would also be a great for melee vs blaster
I would love to see Stances added to the game like in ShadowBane.
You would be able to toggle between these 3 stances:
- Offensive Stance:
- increased damage
- lower defense
- increased attack speed
- same accuracy
- Defensive Stance
- lower damage
- increased defense
- lower attack speed
- slightly increased accuracy
- Precise Stance
- slightly increased damage
- no defense change
- slower attack speed
- increased accuracy
They could even change the default combat stance animation so you could tell at a glance what stance someone was using. I'm not married to the specifics of each stance, I just pulled those out of the air.
