Thread: Fencer or Swordsman
whats the diffrence really ?
Wich class gets to use that cool Katana looking sword?
The idea is that fencer's are faster with less damaging weapons where swordsman are slower with higher damage weapons. In theory it's a preference in how you like to play. However, the reality is that many swordman weapons can be sliced down to nearly fencer speeds and in return dish out more damage all around.
Fencer is definatly a profession that takes a lot of dedication. There are different speical moves so the strategy of playing is different. Although I believe we may be a little outdone by swordman and Teras Kasi in damage, I believe it's a fun path through the game. Don't expect to be soloing anything nearly as large as a ranged person can solo with a few decent pets.
As a Swordsman I can tell you that it's simply a matter of damage over speed. Though if you are willing to pay for a customized piece of equipment then you can close the gap considerably. I currently carry two weapons to change out between based on the effect on what I'm fighting. A custom made Two-Haned Sword (it looks like a large Katana or a small No-dashi (sp) ) and a custom made power hammer. The hammer being the slower of the two of course packs a devil of a punch. It's damage range is 152 to 546 ( i think, not near my home pc at the moment) and I consistently hit w/o using any of my specials for around 800 to 1,000 points of damage with it. The sword is a bit less powerful but considerably faster. It's speed is down to a 2.5 ( i think ) and it's range is 90 to 150 or so. It will consistently hit for about 400 to 800 damage w/o any specials.
A compatriot of mine has chosen to go for speed over power. He is using a stock curved sword and swings at about the same speed I do, he might be a hair faster but not by much. Though he hasn't progressed into the fencer class yet so doesn't have the additional speed modifiers that I do either. He consistently hits for around 200 to 400 damage without his specials. If he had a weapon that was custom made, I'd guess that he could match me for damage over time, especialy if you figure in the cost of using some of the more powerful special attacks that I have access too as compared to the cost of his.
To summarize, though... yes the 2-handed class is much harder hitting, but much slower. Unless you are willing to find a very competent weaponsmith and pay for high quality services. I have been fortunate enough to do so. The 1-handed class is built for speed and fluidity. It doesn't hit as hard but hits much faster and is more appealing to the eye. To be blunt, the Fencer is the graceful dancer and looks it as they twirl, parry and cut. The Swordsman is just that a brutal style of fighting for a brutal type of combat.
I hope I've been some help, if you have any specific question I'll be more than happy to answer it if I can.
