Thread: All you want to be is a Fencer? =)
Some Suggestions then.
Master Fencer, Master Brawler, TKA with combat xp Line to level 4 and Meditation 4, Novice Pikeman, Novice Swordsman, And Each and every Pikeman and Swordsman line that gives Counterattack, Dodge,Block, Melee and Ranged Defense Boosts.
You should still have just enough points to dabble in one or two Base Professions, My suggestion is Medic with Pharmacology 1-4 as you can.and Scout Explore 4. Perhaps some Trapping if you can swing it.
Oh and remember that this would be the absolute end result of your training to be a real Fencer Master.
=)
If you want a goal to work towards, that set did me great in Beta. But then again a simple Novice Carbiner could still kill you before you close.
currently I have artisan engineering IV / surveying IV and working on master one hand sword specialization
I want to make my own swords and become a master fencer
I also just picked up novice medic
do u have any advice on what skills I should obtain while on the path to becoming a master fencer?

What about some ranged weapons skills for support then? I wouldn't neccesarily use them often, but in certain situations it seems that would be the way to attack.
I don't know. What do you guys think?

Minerunner - suppose you did what you suggest, and max out every defensive +add you can. Ranged Defense, Melee Defense, Dodge, Block, Counterattack by going with the various professions that give those bonuses. You'd have no ranged capability, but that's ok - the bonuses are there.
My question is: do all of those bonuses mean anything in the end? I mean, supposing you capped them all out...do they actually work? Do you dodge or otherwise avoid ranged weapon fire and melee attacks at all effectively, or does it all end up not being worth it because a guy with a rifle still kills you (your ranged defense, for all practical purposes, being worthless).
I'm very interested in this type of character, and wonder if it works in practice.
Thanks,
Marcus
Good q Marcus. I'm interested in this too. How effective is this? Maybe a vet beta player can tell us!
By the way, how exactly does counterattack work in this game and what tree do you have to go to earn it?
I've found a way to look at being a fencer that works for me, and doesn't get me all worked up when I get worked by a ranged enemy.
Basically, I as a fencer do not expect to even compete with a knowledgeable opponent at ranged combat. My fencing skill is something I have learned to suprise and disable my opponents before they have time to draw a blaster or rifle. Further, when out hunting animals, I do not use my sword. I use a rifle, just as any Samurai would have used a bow to down a bear, not try and attack it in fair and honorable combat with his sword. When I practice my fencing, I practice on muggers and maulers, rebels and smugglers. Enemies worthy of my expensive hand crafted weapon.
Yeah, a little on the geeky roleplaying side, but really, I'm a swordsman. Swordsmen aren't meant to fight in ranged battles. I have commando and marksmen friends that manage that end. I'm meant to close the distance, back an enemy in the corner, suprise him from around a corner, or humiliate him in a duel.
That being said, being a fencer is VERY satisfying, knowing you are a dying breed of fighter that demands respect for your practiced skill.
I'm enjoying myself just choosing my own path. I am almost done with my Novice Fencer training and have started climbing the tree to becoming a weapons crafter. I want to make my own swords as well. I am also a novice Ranger...i know i knowa wierd combo...but i have a very helpful advantage. i got my bro playing every time i do and we pretty much stick together. he is a BE/CH/Pistoleer. at times i find my adhesive mesh not surving a purpose for my swordbut when the creature finally breaks free and charges i got well placed skull stabs after a volly of noise makers and sharp bone spurs and down they go.
I guesse what im trying to say is no matter what you do nothing beats a companion to watch your back while us Melee tanks watch the front.
as far as pvp goes. until it becomes balanced i only stick to battling Melee users.
I feel that to truely be a fencer that you must be able to defend your self against all manner of attacks.
Thus i am going to be a /Master Fencer/Master Rifleman/ Stimpack chemist(and everything else into medic)
that way not only can i duel with skill, own from long range, and heal but i can afford to call my self a....
Master Fencer.
silus
Sorry Sillus,
That would not be a Master Fencer, that would be a Master Fencer with a minor in Selling out.
Owning is not what Fencing is about.
Fencers fight with skill and honor and dedication.
Your choice to be a Sniper is yours, but true fencers understand that their path might be tougher but there is honor in taking the more difficult path.

Ive talked to several people who had the same idea. I was nearly master brawler when my template ( nearly the same as yours) was shattered. ANY defense ( not offense) bonus of 50 or greater has a soft cap. That means anything over 50 in a defense is completely worthless. Few people in game said this, I also shouted it in general chat, about 5 people there heard it also.
I spoke with a TKA/Fencer/Pikeman. According to him his defense bonuses didnt seem to matter when he was nearing 50.
The results could only be truely detirmined by long series's of damage tests, the average's of a 1000 hits taken per skill boost from Novice Fencer up.
Then again if a Developer were to confirm or deny that rumor that would put the question to rest much faster than months of Player tests.

This is the best thread I've seen on melee classes yet. I too had the idea of going full melee defense (but for 2 hand sword). I can get 101 melee defense, 74 ranged defense whilespending 200 skill points. I had completely planned on doing exactly that until I heard this. PLEASE post if you have experienced the defense cap of 50.
