Thread: Why Was Fencer Made?

I was reading the notes about the creative director favoring ranged combat over melee. I've also been reading various posts, issues and support questions. I'm now a novice fencer and recently picked up a pistol. At Pistol II I seemed more effective and viable then at One handed IV. If the creative director didn't want this in the setting, why was this class made? I seem to have invested a lot of effort in a class designed an intended not to hold its own. I don't want to be unconstructive, but what was the intent, vision and purpose of this class. The title does not imply we shoul be fighting with butterknives and riot control sticks.

I think melee is really an afterthought in SWG unless you walk around wielding a lightsabre.

But enough people are pissed about that that the Devs will actually make it unsucky in coming patches. Just hold out a while longer.

the intent was for us to be owned. every time.

a few days ago i made the decision to quit this class...picking up a gun, its the only way to compete...

i am a pvper...have been for years...in THIS game i have only legitmately killed ONE person in pvp, and that guy was a newb...

this class is now and has always been gimped. dont know why they even put it in the game.

I think people need to pick up a Ranged profession. Even Pistol 4 will make you deadly if you combine it with a melee profession.

I beleive the original idea was the melee would get owned by ranged, I think there may even be a quote by Holocron to that effect, but with the loss of the old boards it is hard to tell.

Having melee in at all addsto the realism as well the continuity (Lightsabers, fisticuffs & Jabba's guards etcetc).

Hazarding a guess as to why fencer is actually in, well they broke one handed & two handed styles into two seperate paths to flesh out the brawler tree a bit. and one handed specialised to Fencer.

I think i would rather have had the brawler tree more like the marksman tree, with combat xp being spent on genreal melee defensive stuff and have unarmed, swords, polearm being the three trees. then specializing one handed/two handed (or Dual Wielding :smileywink as you pleased.

Anyhow only 60k xp to get to become a novice fencer so I guess I ought to play a little more before posting without experience (Literally).

RPG games, both paper and computer, have shown that some people prefer to play the role of a melee combatant. Melee combat is different from ranged combat, and the ficitionalized versions of it have a different allure and romance than does ranged combat. Furthermore, contrary to many statements, there is a fair amount of melee in Star Wars. A lot of it is jedi combat, and a lot more is melee combat by necessity rather than profession, but it still is a part of the Star Wars mystique. When I think of my favorite Star Wars fights, most of them are melee fights. As I understand, there's even more melee in the books (of which I've read few).

Why fencer specifically? Well, the developers clearly chose to create a pattern to all professions: 4 specialty trees per profession. The brawler specialties are fairly straightforward and make sense. Fencing as a specialized melee profession is logical, and has a good deal of history in fiction, written and film. It's a well-defined style of melee combat. The developers clearly did want to offer this profession to those gamers who wanted to play that profession.

Why was it created so weak compared to ranged? Not intentionally, I think. Clearly, the game was created with an eye towards melee, and the developers felt it was not necessary or desirable to make melee the equal to ranged. This again is logical. Melee is not the equal to ranged, which is why cops and soldiers use guns as their primary weapons these days. But I don't think the devs intended to hamstring melee types as much as they did, or make them so far behind the curve compared to the ranged professions. There was never any intent to make the profession unplayable or unenjoyable for those who chose. That's a silly thing to think. If they didn't want it, they wouldn't have made it. If they wanted it, they wanted it to be something that players could enjoy playing.

The dev'sefforts to tweak the combat system to improve the lot of melee players shows that they really want these professions to be playable and enjoyable, though still probably not the equal in all situations to the ranged profession. Which is how it ought to be, really.

Perhaps it's your technique? I win 50% of my duels.. And they aren't against 'noobs'.

Even those with Lightsabers will be kited and annihilated. It's how me and my friend kill Jedi Masters.

Over the next few days, we're going to be implementing a new system: forum rating balancing. We are aware that stars 1 and 5 have been overused by players, while stars 2-4 have shown little use at all. Our new plan calls for the gradual yet systematical nerfing of stars 1 and 5, resulting in an even playing field for our forum-goers. Thank you.

Ahh I think the Jedi powers of Force "Stick within4 metres"and Force "Hit whilst Running" is what will seperate the Jedi from the rest of us.

Actuallya force pull on someone trying to Kite a Jedi would be kinda funny to watch.

um... no I was talking about ranged as well. In fact, I've dueled more ranged than melee. That was before the dizzy/lunge nerf- but to say the class is a total waste imo means *you* don't fit the class.... rather than the class itself is 'useless'.

If ya wanna win all the time become a commando. Personally though, since any moron can win with a flame thrower, I don't find the class very appealing.

Well, the Dark Jedi Masters certainly haven't force pulled us when kiting, but I suppose it's a case of EXTREMELY CRAPPY AI.

You're right. The average human player ought to be just a little more intelligent.

Ya know, chances are he was talking about duels vs. RANGED. Ranged are cheap, they run, and we can't do a d*** thing about it, unless we burst run...but then they burst run, and were screwed. VERY rarely will you defeat a ranged out in the open, even if you get a successful dizzy/lunge, in my experiences, it doesn't last long enough at all to do much of anything.
