Hey Seena, why not give out your technique for fighting ranged in PvP? Lord know's I could use a few tips in that area.

There are no 'melee hybrids' (commando and smuggler are the closest, but they don't actually improve their melee abilities in their tree). It seems pretty clear that melee classes were intended to support the rest of the character's spec, rather than being the defining class. Melee classes all provide defense bonuses useful for ranged classes, and most ranged weapons take more damage against melee. Being able to use asword effectively is something which is situationally useful and provides good body control (in game terms, better ranged and melee defense) but someone insisting on using a just sword in all combat situations in a world full of pistols and rifles probably won't last long without some extraordinary circumstances.

Then why domelee professionshave the same experience and skill point requirements?

Sorry but I don't buy that "support" class B.S.

The devs just plain screwed up when they made melee, period. Now they'd better d-a-m-n well fix it.

Dude every game needs a joke professions who's sole purpose is there for everyone else to laugh and and make fun of those poor souls who were dumb enough to choose it. Welcome to the world of the Fencer! We aren't so bad with a medic permanently healing us.... really.... Just put all your points into Mind like I did!

So a novice commando should be able to kill a master fencer? I dont agree, the devs really nerfed them and a few other classes, i mean look at the dmg of their weapons compared to us, hell we cant even have a rantok sword made but we can make crappy stun batons? It aint right, they need to give us blades with elements and/or specialized armor melee people(not ranged)can only wear to even it out. They would have to make it so that you can only wear the armorif equipped with the melee weapon so ppl dont try to exploit it by using a gun.

Heheheh well... I'm far from Master Fencer - (1212) and I beat a WookieNovice Commando last night in the Cantina at the Reb base on Rori... lololol you should have HEARD the excuses the fellow made. He did use his flame thrower- but I had partaken of a Sunburn, and I do have some medic skills.

Noone laughs at me-especially not that Commando I kept killing last night..... I've been called 'lame' when I've been kited a few times in open spaces- but that happens to everyone. ::shrug::

Melee classes 'stack' better with ranged classes than ranged classes stack with other ranged classes. While it might be true that you're better off being just a pistoleer compared to being just a fencer, a pistoleer/fencer is better than a pistoleer/carbine due to the defense mods stacking and being available all the time. That's why melee classes still have similar requirements as other classes. You can't simply look at 90-some points worth of class by itself and declare it unfit.

There's nothing regarding balance that says all the elite combat classes need to be viable on their own. They just need a niche. The fencer niche is high levels of ranged/melee defense and state mods, combined with good melee damage, to supplement the advanced combat character. This is not something any ranged class can provide.

But melee classes stack well with melee classes as well...

Over the next few days, we're going to be implementing a new system: forum rating balancing. We are aware that stars 1 and 5 have been overused by players, while stars 2-4 have shown little use at all. Our new plan calls for the gradual yet systematical nerfing of stars 1 and 5, resulting in an even playing field for our forum-goers. Thank you.

Wow wow wow, our defensive bonuses DO something? I think you must be thinking of a different game buddy. The defensive bonuses in SWG don't help out against ANY of the higher level encounters. Thus double the bonuses is slightly less ineffective.

Perhaps when they fix the defensive bonuses you will have a point, but not until then.

I am sorry but if you cant kill being a fencer you must be sad. DO combos for melees guys. Like Get a profession with KNOCKDOWN SHOT. then run to them and use ( ) Hit -2. Most likely will kill. SO pretty much all master melee's can kill in 2 hits.

After going up and down the Fencer rollercoaster. I'm pretty happy overall. I may only be a 0/1/0/1 Fencer, but I cannot complain about my ability too much, in PvE, at least. I don't PvP at all given the obvious disparity between melee and ranged combatants. However, it would seem to me that Fencers were made to win battles of attrition, as opposed to slugfests. If you have decent Medic skills (Doctor skills even better) it would seem to me that in order to win you simply have to take your opponents best shots (blissfully healing yourself along the way) until they exhaust themselves then mop the floor with them once they have. The problem is that with our defensive mods seemingly broken, this is impossibility. I believe once they fix our defense so that it actually works. We'll be ALOT better off.

Defense mods do work. Each point of defense translates to 0.5% increase in miss rate. Active defenses may or may not be busted.

Getting high defense mod requires taking defense lines in multiple brawler classes (in particular, TKA precision and fencer S&G). Once you get the defense mods, it's relatively cheap to emphasize one for use in CQ combat. This is in my opinion the role that melee are apparently supposed to play.
