Melee is tougher.. it's not for everyone. That's why you see 90% of everyone online using scout blasters or rifles...

However, it has its rewards..

1.) Make sure you find a decent damage quick delay sword that doesn't take a lot of HAM. Keep in mind that the damage is not what's important here.

2.) Make sure your using the lunge/dizzy combo and you will rock againist humanoids. I haven't had much sucess with creatures. Obviously, this is where the fast speed low HAM drain weapons help a lot! Because you can special move them to death and keep them on the ground the whole time.

Honestly, I think it's easier to get experience as I reached novice fencer. I seem to be able to take a lot more hits as well. I love getting a bunch of kreetles around me and using my spin attack. decent experience.

Also, make sure you use one weapon at least to shoot guys who run or for pulling and scaring away.

Why get Novice fencer?

Because it is one of the most powerful classes out there it is one of the most powerful combat arts in the real world. Sure a guy witha pistol could kill a fencer. But any idiot can pick up a pistol and pull the trigger only one talented in the arts of combat could use a sword to its full effectiveness.

FURY_Chaser, I do agree that being a Melee class is a challenge and I will accept that challenge. However, during the time that I take on this challenge I'd like our correspondent to know what a new player is experiencing. By no means am I giving up=P

Bazik, what exactly does the lunge/dizzy combo do? I have not gotten to fighting against humanoids yet... so.. Yeah I am considering trading in my Curved Sword for another Vibroblade which has about the same damage but less HAM costs. Thank you for saying that it is easier to get experience once you reached Novice Fencer, it is good encouragement.

darkangelus226, thank you for the advice, however I travelled to Naboo today and it was just way too laggy=(

Subtil_Serpent , if you're going to cry about how my post is a rant, despite the fact that it is clearly justified, you need not be on this forum. If you think you are cool by announcing to the world that you are putting me on ignore, you are not. If you think your opinion is somehow valued highly by others, it is no longer. Get a life.

Teras_Kasi_Knight, just because Fencer is powerful in the real world, does not mean that it is the same in the game. It is true that any idiot can become a ranged player and kill me, but isn't it slightly annoying to have idiots advancing faster than you? We are not only handicapped as Melee players, but against ... say.. TKA we don't really hold much of a chance either. I heard that Meditate is a very useful skill.. what do we have? Defense vs Intimidate.. ooh. I have played MUDs before (SWG is pretty much one) and there is ALWAYS a class balancing issue, and it will NEVER be balanced, but it could get a bit better at least! I hope.

Actually, once I hit Novice Fencer taking down a TKA has become a fairly regular occurence. We are quite possibbly the most powerful class in the game, there are just a few bugs left to work out (I really want to swing while I give chase). I haven't looked, but I don't think any other class gets the bonus to resist knockdown that we do.

Think about that. Two of the biggest nerf cries on the forums are to get rid of the pistoleers pistolwhip and the bounty hunters knockdown. We don't have near as much to worry about with that one (although until I earn those resists pistolwhip really hurts).

Glad to see it looks like you're going to stick it out, you'll be happy you did. Just remember that nothing worth having comes easy

danin3d, thank you for sharing your experiences, but I was talking about PvM when I started this topic. (I believe TKAs exp/kill faster, take less damage, etc) However, your input is very much appreciated because now at least I know that Fencers stand a chance in the PvP world. Thanks=) Oh by the way, I'm 1/5th to Novice now.. hurrah!

Well, as far as going up against PC controlled entities goes, there is one HUGE thing you can do to help yourself out. I'm not talking about NPC humanoids, I'm talking about big game and big XP.

Train novice scout. Nothing, and I mean nothing is as helpful as the good old wire mesh trap for taking down big critters with a sword. It drops their melee defense for a long enough period to do some serious damage. I made novice off of humbaba, and there's no way I'd have taken one down without the wire mesh traps.

Now this worked great for me, and the hides and bones I harvest fetch me more than enough creds to keep me in the latest model my swordsmith has to offer.

Wire mesh trap eh... I will definitely try that one. What are its neededcomponents? And mmm I never found gathering credits to be too daunting of a task in game. Thanks again for the advice.

Actually you can get master trapper pretty quick, just get a group on one of the non starting plantes and toss traps all the time, when your getting 400+xp for the trapping, you can get master trapper in a day. The Glowwire trap is a nice upgrade to the wire mesh.

I didn't see anyone address the question of the lunge/dizzy combo. I will take the time to say here it is sick. While the lunge part doesn't work so well against monsters, dizzy really does, but it rules against huminoid creatures. I was helping some buddies level up on naboo, and mind you I am still working my way through expert 1h sword when I got jumped by one of those merc guys. He coned very red to me and I thought i was dead but I decided to fight it out. I took him to school, in fact the short bus pulled up in front of his house as his body hit the ground( he gave me 1800 ih swd exp and 300 combat ). I Was in shock. Against humans this gives you the ability to fight things WAY abover your level. Beasts you still gotta becareful of, but lunge dizzy is aweomse cause it makes your human enemies fall to the ground and not be able to get up.

I would also like to say that I believe that having a melee and a ranged weapon makes this game alot easier. Origionally I got Rifle so that I could pull enemies one at a time in order to dispatch them , and I found that I can greatly enhance my combat ability. Versitility is the name of the game in SWG, and the more ways that you can dispatch your enemies, the better off you will be. Personally I plan on being a fencer/squad leader/ Rifle specilist (or as close as I can come) and be a preatty decent scout and medic as well.

Finally I would like to push Vibro Blades. I have now purchased both a Vibro blade and a Ryyk, both hight quality and both from a master smith. If you are going to be using bezerk and trying to just out dish the enemy, than maybe the ryyk is better. But if you are going to be spaming, go vibro blade. The ap it has makes rumbling through mobs a piece of cake, and it also rips PCs apart. my vibro blade does 35-135 damage 1.8 sp and hams of 15/20/14. I spam all through the battle and my bars almost never go down, my down time is almost non. I tried with the ryyk but it just hit my hams to hard. I had a 77-178 ryyk with 2.0 spd, and I was doing more damage to myself than the monster was

As to how easy the game is, well I think the best thing about this game is it almost lets you set your own difficulty. If you want a harder game, you will orient towards big game and PVP, if you just want to have fun playing your character but don't wish to be competative, that's an option too. I personally think that's one of the strongest selling points in the game. I personally hated how much time it took to feel like your character could do anyting in games such as EQ and AC2, I really like how in this game you can start doing things out the shoot, but I digress.

These are just some things I have noticed, I personally think that melee is a very strong class and I have yet to really hit anykind of wall, so stick with the sword, because if nothing else it gives you versitility.

PS and the look of suprise on the person who challenged you to a duel because you were carrying a rifle and suddley whipe out your sword and take them to school is priceless. Remeber Target+dash +Lunge/DiZZY/1h hit = dead opponent. Oh, and Creating Macros Rocks.

DarthGanjookie I think I will try the non starting planet idea, but which one should I go to? Any suggestions on what to kill once I get there?

I have a lot of trouble keeping HAM bars up, maybe it is due to my Curved Sword's costs? I'll probably buy a Vibroblade soon, say tomorrow? Also I don't think I'm ready for fighting against humanoids just yet. I have yet to declare a side in the civil war, and I'm afraid of losing too many faction points and then regret it later

I must say though, the Fencing exp is coming in (however slow) while I kill everything in sight at Tyrenna for Scouting exp (Going for either Bounty Hunter or Creature Handler, depending on the difficulty of obtaining Survival exp). However, right now it is 3:49 AM PST and time for bed! Thank you all for the replies, they have been very helpful!

there are many bandits and other humans you can fight that do not have faction alighment. Naboo is a great place for this. You can get brawler mercs and Rouge Gungans all the time. Corellia Out side of Coronet is great too because there are gangs of thugs there. They give decent exp, drop items, and they fall like flys to your lunge dizzy.

As far as the HAM problem, yeah, it's the reason I am not gonna use a Ryyk at the moment, I like my special moves to much.

Dizzy/Lunge Combo.. if you haven't read it elsewhere yet.. (I apologize if I don't explain it perfect)

1.) Lunge the enemyto make him kneel. Then immediately dizzy him. This is why a fast weapon is important. If he's humanoid, he'll easily have a terrible time getting back up because he's dizzy, possibly even falling to hit back when he tries. Some choose at this time to do another lunge to make perfectly sure he goes down, or following with a body hit of some sort which some say helps to knock a dizzy person over.

Also.. vibroblades have Armor Piercing rating of 1. All our other weapons are 0. Good vibroblades seem to be some of the best right now.. but heck, get good version of all our weapons so you can find the best weapon for the mob your fighting. Stun batons are missing on my server now.. but they are the ultimate death to enemy in PvP.
