I took a fencing class for some time, but I didn't stick with it. I chose hapkido over fencing.
So yeah, go TKA!

Apparently the Oylmpics isn't considered big...
I do fencing, epee, kendo, and a sort of Saber thingy but I just sort of goof off with those.
I've learned several things... I will never truly understand sword fighting because I will never have to fight for my life. Currently, my mindset is hitting them before they hit me, but in a Real swordfight, its disabling/killing them before they do so to me... And even then I don't get it because of my training to compete, not kill... Not to protect myself.
I've learned that as sharp as a real blade is, it will take more then one slash to kill a man... And striking a man once wouldn't likely kill him... I'm an EMT, I've heard ofand seen people stabbed over five times and not giving up the ghost. I suppose after you get a good hit on someone, they will either respond with severe lack of noticing and an increase in motivation to kill you... Or they will slow down for a moment and give you a chance to deal a fatal blow.
Fencing would poke little holes in a person, and unless you go through their heart or throat or rupture a vital artery ( such as the Aorta) you will not kill them quickly, but tick them off greatly.
A regular long saber would probably do some serious hacking, but it would need to be very sharp... It doesn't take much to get a little momentum behind those and you could lop off a limb with a little effort. Physics is great, aint it?
Also, because I've never been trained to defend myself for the sake of my life, I can easily get my butt kicked by someone who doesn't know how to fence... I don't know why that is, but the hardest person to fight is the one who doesn't know what the hell they are doing.

Account after account of later period fencing duels using epee or light rapiers showed the loser to be the one that bleed to death first. Your average duel left participants covered in small gashes from thrusts and lacerations from draw cuts. Old school german fencers wore facial scars from duelling as marks of pride.
Account after account of early single handed sword fighting shows the blows to be to devestating to survive without some form of protection. Add to the fact that the martial training toughened your average warrior to walk off horrendous amounts of damage (probably mutant womp rats).
Its very hard to match sport or even re-creation fighting to the real thing for the simple reason that in order to not hurt ourselves to terriblymuch we have to put rules on how a kill or attack is made. Touch kills, non-metal weapons, non-targettable areas, etc. Even in armor I still get bruises the size of my hand even though we're still "pulling" theshots a bit. But then again they think we're all rhino's down here in Texas
I'm looking forward to the new animations for double weapons fighting. Ooooooo, crouching tiger hidden dragon stuff

SWG fencer more closely resembles Filipino Blade/Stick arts. It's a combat oriented martial artthat orginated in the Philippines between waring clans. Known as either Kali,Escrima, or Arnis
Orginally, it started off with bladed weapons and depending on the terrain, the type of blade was different. There have been accounts oflone Filipino Bladesman who would kill an entire platoon of Japanese soldiers in WW II. Later, after the spanish occupation, all bladed weapons were banned, so the practioners used sticks to practice their art. Many of them would participate in death matches as adeadly test of their skill and art. And YES, we dual wield
Sorry for the short history lesson, but it's my take on it....

Kendo for about 6 months... long enough to learn it was fencing, and not swordplay. And long enough to learn I had more fun in Tai Chi.

I'm a RL fencer, epee. I like Fencer in the game but why does a fencer use a GADERIFFI BATON? A better word would be one-hander, not fencer.

Kendo. When people at the airport ask what's in the long bag that looks like a gun case, we usually say "fencing equipment"; that seems to get the point across. Most people are taken aback a little when you say "martial arts" equipment-- and that term is not particularly useful either, since I would call epee/foil/saber fencing a martial art also."Fencing"seems to be used as a catch-all term by historians, much in the same way that you will often hearthe term "boxing" used to describe kung fu or "grappling" in reference to judo.
Kendo isn't about power hitting as Heavy Swordsman in SWG is, and you wouldn't use the same techniques wielding a hammer as you would with a sword.
But I would say the fact that Swordsmen have counterattack is accurate-- kendo doesn't really emphasize purely defensive moves like dodging or blocking. On the other hand, I think the idea that the fencer is more precise and finesse-oriented has more to do with kendo.
In any case I tried both heavy swordsman and fencer when I started playing and preferred fencer. Since have then, I have mastered both, but fencer is what appeals to me from a kendo perspective, and it's the one profession I keep full time.
