I am...

what do I think about it? well, I love it

dunno what else you want me to say

irl, most fencers are very agile, so that comparison goes..
fencer weapons are VERY light...
but fencers (good ones ) can aim their attacks so precisely that that can just find the weak
spot in any armor to penetrate it (not that we ever fight with armor )

RL fencer here, as well...

Fencing in SWG looks more like a saber style than traditional fencing. Our weapons are light, and we're just as agile as SWG fencers.

We just don't use Stun Batons. But if we did, "assaults" (fencing bouts) would get damn interesting!

I only do Kendo and Jujitsu, but the principals are pretty much the same. I have watched fencers fight, very fast and agile....But, I dont think that, other then the fact that they are fast and agile, it compares withSWG very well. First off, Stun Batons shouldnt kill you, unless its a real powerful one and the man conducts somehow. And I've seen them dodge with a group of 7 people around them, barely taking hits. VERY unlikely. Also, I still stick with my theory that a person that knows some novice with sword, axe and hands should not be able to defeat a MASTER in something such as sword, axe and hands, unless they are extremely lucky.

ya i see SWG being closer to a sabre type rather than foil or epee... alot more slash and bash rather than quick and whippy

I do SCA style melee fighting with a heavy emphasis on period style techniques within our combat rules (hands and nothing below the knee aren't legal targets for safety purposes). This means full period armor (coat of plates over a shortsleeve chainmaille shirt andhigh carbon steel bracers, guantlets, and full grieves/legs, and a heavy pigfaced bascinet helmet). I do single (with and without a shield) and double handed swords as well as polearms so I know a little of what its like to swing these things in a fight.

The fencing in SWG looks to be a combo of saber and heavier single handed sword techniques. Most of it is taken from the saber techniques which allow for more wrist flick moments and were originally intended for unarmored or very light armored opponents. Notice the attacks to the head and face which were highly emphasised in duels. Foil and epee's were developed as NON weapons in response to a non military weapons ban and their techniques reflect as much.

Swordsman animations take alot from european and asian sword techniques and are pretty much right on the money. The low stance sword pointing backwards is very common in two handed sword technique.

Polearms...eh. Alot of the stuff they do I'd never do in a fight in a million years. Turn you back on an opponent? Yeah right! Its all about heavy slashing from above, large sweeps from the sides, and quick stabbing motions to the front. In real life not much could stand against full blow from a pikeman.

"Fencing" is the act of "swords play". In other words any type of technique utilizing any type of sword is considered "fencing". Dont get confused with mainstream sport "fencers". That includes european and asian (kenDO is not a combat style, kenJIUTSU is a combat style). Miyamoto Musashi one of japans most well known samurai and considered one of the best swordsman was a "fencer"..albiet a darn good one.

The fencing i've done isn't like a swordfight when i took fencing...how it worked is basically you dodge a lot and try to deflect the other person's sword but it doesn't last that long because it ends after your sword comes into contact with someone...then you get some points depending on where it hit, really when you go up against someone else..altogether the whole thing doesn't last more than 10 minutes if both of you are very good

I have also done 10 years of SCA Heavy fighter, ( Sword and Shield, Short Sword and Broad Sword, Polearms and Two handed Swords) also 6 years of Fencing whenI was young and for the last few years Martial Arts (2nd Dan).SWG fencer is unto its self like most RPG class not in reality. We have to remeber ( I am also a Master Commando ), this game is just good fun and is on the same level as Martial Arts films....lol. Neat to look at but in RL not there. So just sit down, strap up and keep you hands in side the car....
