I've been reading through the forums, and the templates since I'm about to start Fencer, and I'm getting worried.
My alt is almost a master swordsman, so I don't really want to repeat that road. Also a master doc, so ditto there.
But all the templates seem to be Master Fencer, Master Swords/Pike/TKA. And then go on to describe the DoT pikes, or the TKA attacks, or using Swords in PvE. Fencer seems to basically be there to give defenses, and allow the stun baton in PvP.
Is this an accurate view? Or am I missing some keys to fencer? I've already done the swordsman route, and I don't really want to do TKA, since everyone and their brother seems to have that. I really wanted to try out 1-h weapons, but I'm wondering what I'm getting in to.

yup youve got that done pretty well.. fencer isnt good for pve really only pvp... if you want pve your gonna have to go with tkm swordsman or pikeman.. i would reccomend swordsman.. its the best out of all melee classes for pve... combined with fencer defense.. and a good weapon you should have fun with it

fencer alone isn't even really that great in pvp either... fencers strength is in defense so unless you have a legendary or exceptional baton.. your better off using fencer for defense and getting a different profession for offense, if you have only one choice for a combat profession though, stick with fencer defense is nice and it will keep you alive.

opposite of the post above this, i find fencer to be AWESOME in pvp even with a cheap (but not too cheap) stun baton. the only way it wont work to your advantage is if u always pvp vs the uber pvp. uber DoT, uber defense whores. my template is master swords (EXCELLENT FOR PVE) master brawler (added toughness, intimidate2 and a kd) master fencer (works great for pvp) and pike defenses with some medic. this is really the only template that you will suceed greatly in both pvp and pve. but fencer is NEVER to be used in pve, so i suggest picking up swordsman , or if you have MILLIONS of money then pikeman. (PS, the fencer melee and ranged defense are what makes fencer the biggest choice to combine with a pve template as it makes you OWN almost all caves and a very good tank against high lvl mobs)

Unless you plan to use your charachter to kill ill prepared or unskilled oponents, then i'm afraid the way thingsare just now fencer is only useful as a defensive profession.
If you choose to listen to advice to the contrary, prepare to be re-grinding your template within a short while.

I have been all melee professions besides pikeman. First TKA/Doc then Fencer/Doc and Swordsman/Doc. I enjoyed all of them accept TKA (i dont know why). But alas I am bored with the Doc thing and decided to go Brawler/Fencer/Swords/and some medic because I want to really experience the PvP side of the game a little more now and still be able to own high end mobs. As a fencer previously It was still fun to do high end tanking for friends and not take any real damge. You can do Janta missions in like 90 secs with a fencer but that is as high end as you will get solo. I could be wrong tho.

If you mean only fencer as in no other combat....
than no. You're screwed.
I've got master fencer and master ch.
Neither helps the other.
If you want to PvP or PvE you need something else: be it pets, defenses, or groupmates.
but alone fencer goes a long way for not much output.

Hmmm...I've never had issues with fencer in PvE. Between the stun/kinetic damage, nothing on Dantooine bothers me. That is, unless you're talking about PvE = DWB or NS Stronghold. Then, sure, I agree. Fencer isn't enough. But, for run-of-the-mill janta/mokk grinding, I have no issues. In fact, sometimes I crank through them faster than my Master Pike
alt on the other side of the desk. In fact, I like using Fencer more than Rifle in PvE. The /follow macro is so much easier than worrying about range and whatnot.

That's essentially my template. It's basically an old PvP template that I never have bothered to move away from. But, with this template I have no issues until I try to take on the 80% resist, 70K+ HAM mobs or the aforementioned Cascade of Hatred wielders. But, then again, who doesn't?
The 100% KD and dizzy defense is very nice, from a PvP perspective. Don't believe I've been taken down by a TKM in a long, long time.

I am master pistoleer/master fencer and have absolutely no problems with pve. I kill anything with light armor fairly easy. Although my gaffi has close to a 400 max so that helps. As for going into the big caves such as the dwb, geo cave, etc., they are tough even with tk/fencer. medium armor is just tough unless you have swords or pike and the accuracy mods on your pikes kill you. If you do choose to take two melee, i would go tk/swords or fencer/swords. swords is there for anything with medium armor.

any combo of pistoleer / fencer is going to be good, you will cap out dodge (most likely) and have very high defenses.
