Thread: Put Away the curved and get a Gaffi Stick!
I recently found a weaponsmith (Wildcat) on Bloodfin that had a gaffi stick for sale. I had never seen a player made one, so I bought it more as a novelty than anything else.
Originally it was 129-219, 3.5 speed, and I had it sliced up to 165-281, 3.5. I started whacking on things, and to my amazement, it didn't seem much slower than my 1.7 sliced curved. Damage, of course, was much greater. I tried it out using hit3 spamming and other special moves. What I found was that the high HAM penalties were more than offset by increased damage and increased number of one-hit kills. I used my BodyHit3 spam key, and I would simply erase creatures! Obviously faster kills mean less damage you are taking from the creatures, which again effectively lower the HAM penalty. A final bonus is that the weapon's mind penalty is low, and so when I did get a little low on Health/Action, I had plenty of mind for heals.
After about a week of using one, I won't go back to a curved. It's in the bank now. I still keep a good vibrobladeand stun baton for certain applications, but for generic, unarmored creatures, the Gaffi Stick is the way to go. I strongly encourage everyone to at least try one out.
For reference, I'm a master with +15 in speed mods, so I'm not sure if this analysis holds up if your speed isn't quite as developed. Do whatever works for you.

that's the key there.... for people who don't have +speed it's not worth it, but higher in fencer it works better than curved swords

My Gaffi is 128-218, 3.5, 61/38/20 (-1 range mods). It has an 18% speed slice, lowering speed to 2.9, and I always keep a 30% health cost reduction and 15% speed reduction (or 15% max damage increase) powerup on it - HAM cost is rarely a problem. As a 0101 fencer, I consistently hit in the high 900's, on average, with a respectable number of 1200-1300 hits using 1H Hit2 vs. white and yellow con (e.g., Binayre Pirates or Binayre Smugglers on Talus). At my skill level, the only problem I've encountered are rare streaks of whiffs - I usually end up incapped or in the cloning center if I get 3 whiffs in a row. The Gaffi is very competitive with my Curved, and is better for fighting weak whites or lower cons due to the 1-hit ability (minimum damage and lower damage variability simply rules). ![]()
Guys... I just got my Gaffi sticks... sliced at 28% damage and HOLY *edit*'in POOP its unbelievable the damage on it is disgusting my weapon is like 160-280 3.5spd powerup gets it up even higher... and
WOW.... since im master fencer i still hit the cap everytime
I cant believe the damage im doing with it
Maybe SWG wants us to use more tradional weapons such as this or the stun baton hence why the buff'ed them... my curved sword is going away for awhile because im all about the Gaffi Stick baby!
heh we still may have broken moves and be underpowered but this is definately a step in the right direction
Since I'm only a novice Fencer the gaffi is too inaccurate and slow for my taste. It is a nice weapon in terms of damage but if yourarely hit and attack very slowly it becomes very easy to die.
I've been using the Stun Baton lately and it's working wonders. It's consistently hitting for 200 average per hit with just regular attacks and it does it faster. (I don't normally do special moves unless the mob is a flyer and can book it past 64m in 3 seconds and even then only as a finishing move) It's especially nice since I haven't seen a creature yet with a stun resist. One thingabout it thoughis it does not damage structures whatsoever.
On a side note, I'm not sure what factors/multipliers affect damage to lairs, but I did a single hit of over 12,000 damage to a greater womp rat lair using the gaffi stick and 1HandHit3. The hit prior to it was over 8K.

One really great trait of the Gaderiffi baton not really mentioned here is that it has acomparatively low mind cost (health is the highest HAM cost). Mine has l mind cost similar to my vibroblade. If you have healing (whether yourself or a medic in a group), you can use a lot of specials specials. It is great for finifhing things off with body hits.
lol guys... don't sing it's praises TOO much, others will hear, and start asking for a nerf!
hehehe

Interesting thought. How to you nerf a fencer? Make them a chef?
Sounds cool, but if you are really after a beat stick, go for it two handed style. For one handed i liked my Ryyk blade or 2.8 101-168/ 2.4 84-150somethingishsliced stun baton. I have tried fencer and I am now trying out two handed. While I seemed to hit alot more with the fencer, the weapons of the two handed just blew me out of the water. I mean, at apprentice two handed, i got a Power hammer, which is currently 180-468, 5.4 speed while unsliced.... Which means once i get this bad boy sliced for speed, and get myself leveled up a little more so I get more speed... All i can say is wow.
Wow.
