Thread: Rude?

I'll admit upfront that I'm whining here so you don't have to read my post if you don't want to hear it, just move along. I just need to get this off my chest..

I don't know about you but I consider it rude when entertainers walk into the cantina (hotel, theater) and start doing their thing when there's already a group in progress. I guess I'm just trying to understand their thought process. Do you not know that you get more xp grouped with the other entertainers? It's not like you can't see everyone's grouped with the group icon over their heads. Maybe it's a question of shyness, I don't know. How about introducing yourself and asking to sit in or join the band first before you start playing or dancing?

And while I'm in whine mode, I'd just like to ask "Why is it, when tipping is so bad, that entertainers themselves are so darn stingy when tipping for training"?" I mean, come on, I have run my butt off doing delivery missions to pay for my own skills. I won't charge for training but I would think you'd at least tip me good for training you. I trained a guy today in Ent Heal III and he tipped me 200 creds! Then he whined to me about how he had to run so many delivery missions to pay for Music 4! What, you think someone trained me in Ent Heal III? No, I paid for it myself. In fact I have paid for all my skills myself so far. Why do so manypeople think they somehow deserve to be trained for free?

I know, not constructive at all. Flame on!

no flame here, just cool lizard soul.

I think the new entertainers just need to be told that. alot of the entertainers that jump in and don't group are ones who want to play music, and if the band is playing a high level song then they don't want to join them because they think it is rude to ask to play a lower song. They may feel embarised by there music skill and hide in a corner? I don' know really, but talk to them and send a group invite and see if the want to join.

As for the tips on training, I wish I could get more, but dang 200 is a pritty good tip from what I have seen. lol. I even barter for training somepeople. If I trian you in this give me "so and so" ok? hay I like that hat. *grins*

But anyhow I am sure you feel better now that you have let out some steam. have fun and keep on grovin

Well...I will say up front that entertainer is my secondary field. I am primarily a medic, but I play music or dance for fun and relaxation after a hard day at the hospital.

But, I have noticed a very different mentality among the entertainers I have met so far (and that is not a lot, so please don't be offended if this doesn't discribe you) as compared to the medics and doctors.

In the hospitals I have worked in, the medics have all pulled together to train each other for free. When someone is ready for a new skill that no one else has...we all chip in to pay for it! That way we all benefit and we act as a true team.

In the cantina, it has been a very different story. I have tried to ask for training there and been told they would train me for half the regular cost. Geez...and that was after I spent a few hundred credits worth of stimpacks healing their action while they danced! I was offended and left to pay full price to a regular trainer. It seems to me that most of the entertainers I have met (and admittadly I may have just met the wrong ones or been in the wrong city) have had a me-me attitude. They don't want to group, they don't even want to share the stage with you and would rather you just die! It was sad. In the three cantinas I have been in in three cities I have experienced this. No one would train me, even though I heal them all night long. No one wanted me in a group, and no one hardly would acknowledge me at all! I knaow they were at their keyboard...they were chatting with other customers...just ignoring any other entertainers.

Has anyone else seen this so far? I was very disappointed at the lack of commaradery among the entertainers I have met. Most have been nasty to each other in some warped sense of competition I suppose...but it is really sad. Am I imagining it? Is it just me they hate? Am I in the wrong cities?

i always train for free. i have always been trained for free. i tip for training when i can. i have been given tips back for after giving them for training. i think the entertainer profession has a good free training mentality because we know how hard it is to make money in the profession.

I've always trained for free as well.

However, I did buy all of them except EH4, I did put in 1/4 the cost tho.

Sometimes "Can I join?" messages get missed in the "you perform a flourish", "you gain ----exp", and general chatter. Starting dancing or playing can be seen ("Hey, there's a dancer not in the group, I'll send them an invite.") So that could be part of it as well, especially when the person interested in joining has some other title above their head.

As to training, at Mos Espa Cantina on Starsider training is quite free. We all pull together to help keep each other trained, in fact when someone asks for training it's usually a race to see who can stop and get them. As with performing, my feelings on the subject are if someone wants to tip me, great. If they don't, that's fine too. It's not that hard to take 30 minutes or so for a couple of trips to Mos Eisley and back if I need extra cash.

mostly we have to outplay each other for tips. Heck alot of times people only tip one person in the group and leave. So there is a differant feel for it. I have gone in with alot of people for a skill, and it really helps and think more musicians should do it.

I just started to work on my Musician skills last night. When I walked into the Cantina in Bestine (on Eclipse) there was a large group already going. I had just left the trainer after getting Novice Entertainer so the whole thing was new to me.

I asked if I could join the group, but they were playing tunes above "Starwars1" so I excused myself from the group and disbanded.

However, I didn't stand right there in front of them and begin working on my first skill points. I took my slitherhorn (is that right?) over to a small alcove on the left side and began playing over there. Most of the customers that came in still gave exp to the group, but a few saw me in the corner and came over to lend me some exp points.

Before the night was over I was able to get Musician I and I joined a couple of dancers in a group when there were no other musicians left in the Cantina. Then I was able to play "Starwars1" and "Rock" til my little heart was content

Now, when I was trained in Musician I, i tipped 25 credits. I hadn't done that many missions yet and was swimming in the creds yet. (and i wasn't getting that many /tips in the corner) but I haven't had anyone "charge" either of my characters yet. With my Artisan, I asked the first several times and they always said "Free"....so now, I tip what is affordable and reasonable (afordable first) but if anyone wanted to charge me I would completely understand.

I would never dream of charging anyone for training. If someone offers to pay, I tell them it isn't necessary. Keep in mind that each time you train someone, you get leadership xp, so it's not like you're not getting anything out of the deal. And hey, you never know. That person you trained may be a master in another field and quite willing to train you up as well.

There are a lot of reasons why someone might not want to join the group.

1) They're new, only have starwars1 and don't feel comfortable asking the group to play down to their level.

2) They're on a gig mission and don't want lose the reward to the group.

3) They're new and don't realize there's a group XP bonus or that everyone gets Ent Heal XP when the group gets watched.

4) They're more highly skilled than the group and don't feel like losing XP by playing down. This sort of thing will mitigate itself when we finally get some novice musicians creating the high-end instruments.

5) They're anti-social and just don't feel like grouping.

As for the tipping for training thing, at my local place, everyone pools money for the higher level training and we all train each other for free. I do tip folks who train me and I don't ask for money myself. Let's face it, money's pretty easy to get in this game. Nearly all of my training has come from the NPC trainers and I've financed nearly all of my training so far just on gig missions. The only time I've left Dearic was to go do some surveying and sampling.

More than any other profession, entertainers tend to have a "place" that's their place. If you're going to be performing in the local cantina for the forseeable future, it behooves you to establish a good rapport with the other entertainers who work there. Free training is just one of the ways you can establish a good name for yourself. Besides, if you have any aspirations towards Master Entertainer/Dancer/Musician/ID then you're going to want those apprenticeship points more than you'll want a few credits.

Yeah Oss, sharing the bill is good. We on Rori are fairly close knit. BTW 25k left to music 4 woot!..

I always ask if I can join or belt out a few rounds. I think alot of the newbies just don't know. For example I was playing in Narmle.. and the entertainer there VOS.. something or other.. was playing rock. So I ask to join and play a few rounds..

I then decide to go it alone. I explain I'm leaving.. then left the area to play my soulfull Folk music. heh.. No healing xp but still I seperated myself to leave the crowd to Vos. Courtesy. Plain and simple.

As far as training others.. I know tips come few and far between. I usually don't think about getting tips from people I train. I figure they'll be able to play the more complicated songs with me so I'm cool with it. But I guess some compensation should at least be offered. Makes sense..

OOC: I have no problem at all training anyone in the entertainer arts for free, although interesting trades will be considered. That's the way you get them hooked. Give them the first few for free. hehe

But at the musician level, I think my attitude might change since the costs are so much more extreme. At least that's what I've heard or are they still in the 1K * level category? If the are twice as much, I'l probably want some compensation for those higher level skills, something to the tune of 10-25 percent of the actual cost, so with 10 to 4 trains I can get my money badk for the cost of training.

As far as plying down on songs, I have no problem with this at all. I'm not in a race to "win" so I can just dig on the sounds and the good conversation around me. Around hour four though, my face starts to twitch at rock and I have to either go up or down - just something new.

I would say entertainers, as a whole, are probably more mercenary then medics and your Tat entertainers are probably going to be the most money-grubbing of all. Jolo enjoys the music, and feels the beat, but he knows what it's like not to have money on Tat and isn't about to let that happen to him].

IC: Hey man, I don't know why everyone gets so upset about charging for this or that. That's the way the world works and to be honest, the less skilled entertainers, the more money in my pocket. I believe in being fair, but that's just good economics. "Screw a person over and they won't come back but drive a hard bargain and they'll respect you more. "
My grandmother used to tell me that all the time while I was growing up at The Corpus Infucata, a pleasure house in Mos Entha. Words to live by.

I think SlickRiptide pretty much hit the major reasons. And Mekora, come on over to Corellia when you want to entertain, we'd love to have you. I think you're just meeting the wrong crowd atMos Sandbox.
