Is the exp gained always in the single digits or is there a way to gain at a faster rate? Also, is there any benefit to using different instruments other than sound, etc?

I read once that dancers get better exp if they use thier most recently aquired dance,..makes sense,.don't know if it applies to music,..but it sucks to be playing the same tune over and over. I say screw it and play whatever,..as in I'm not in that too much of a rush.
At music 3 I find that I get in the high teens exp anyways nomatter what I play,.so that may answer your question.

Do yer flourishes in pairs always never ever singly.

Use newest song and newest instrument when ya can.

Most importantly group up with other musicians.

When yer in a cantina group do not band flourish noone gets exp but you, and it drains folks. Band flourishing comes in handy in bands doin gigs an such, not levelin.

You should be good to go

PS Please done afk macro for tips and dont afk when playin in a Cantina band

It's actually the newest song OR the newest instrument.

For example, I can play the Ommni (my highest instrument) and I get the max XP from playing Star Wars 1 on Ommni, just like I get max XP playing Jazz (my highest song) with a slitherhorn.

Of course, you get a group bonus too...so big bands are a plus.

As Waho said, it seems to be highest instrument or highest song. But you'll also get XP bonuses based on:

  • Those you heal. You get the Entertainment Healing XP plus a bonus to Musician XP

  • Those who /clap or /cheer for you. You get a slight bonus during the next XP reward cycle based on a listener who does this.

  • The size of the band. You get an incremental bonus that scales with the amount of players in the band.

  • The most skilled player using the highest instrument available. If there are four folks on Slitherhorns and someone with an Ommnibox joins them and starts playing, their XP reward goes up.

i just this past weekend started a new character that ive been training as a musican. i have been playing around with a macro that does 4 sets of 4 flourishs seporated by a /pause 20; and that seemed to be working fairly well. would it work even better if i adjusted it to only do two or threeflourishs in a row like most of you are suggesting, or doesnt it matter?

im still trying to learn the ins and outs of this profession as im used to a more aggresive career path, so any sugguestions you guys have would be great thanks

The macro that I use when I am chatting it up is 2 flourishes seperated bya /pause 30;

It doesn't sound bad and also doesn't eat up too much Action.

Usually though I just hit buttons when it sounds good.

The problem you'll run into is running out of action too fast. Each flourish executed takes a bite out of your action, but not every flourish adds to your xp. A flourish is about5 seconds long, and since the xp tick is every 10 seconds, two flourishes fit between each tick. If you do more flourishes, you use up the action for them, they all get queued up and played, but from the third on they won't affect your xp. Here's a quick example of some system messages:

you execute a flourish
you execute a flourish
you execute a flourish
you execute a flourish
You receive 10 Musician xp [still playing second flourish]
....[ten seconds pass, plays third and fourth flourish]
You receive 8 Musician xp

Compare to:

you execute a flourish
you execute a flourish
You receive 10 Musician xp [still playing second flourish]
you execute a flourish
you execute a flourish
You receive10 Musician xp

You do the same flourishes, using the same action points, but by waiting until after the first xp tick, you get more xp. To maximize your xp per tick, do two flourishes followed by a ten second pause. Now, this is also fairly action intensive, so you can also put in longer pauses between flourish pairs. So you'd have something like this:

you execute a flourish
you execute a flourish
You receive 10 Musician xp
[now playing base melody for two measures]
You receive8 Musician xp
[playing base melody for two moremeasures]
You receive 6 Musician xp
you execute a flourish
you execute a flourish
You receive 10 Musician xp
...

By waiting for two ticks before doing more flourishes, you use 1/3 of the action while only getting 6 less xp.

By base melody I meant the tune that you play when not doing flourishes. There's probably a better music phrase for it. Base line? UnFlourish? Notes to gouge eardrums with (SW1 with slitherhorn)?
