Thread: Poll Is 'Red Light District' acceptable?
Hello all. I need your input on something that's coming up with regards to player cities.
You may have heard by now that politician trainers have appeared on test center. One of the skills proposed a while back is that a politician can zone all or part of a city for a special purpose. There is an entertainer specialty that gives a bonus to dancing/singing activities.
The name of thisentertainment special zoning is "Red Light District".
Please reply with your feelilngs positive, negative, or neutralregarding this name.
First, let me state my alt is a dancer/entertainer.
I think this is acceptable... however there should be another zone such as arts district. Red light gives a bonus to BF, and arts a bonus to mind maybe?
Two sides of the coin there are. ![]()
With no alternative, absolutely not. To each their own but my dancer won't entertain in a red light district. There should be an alternative for those of us who choose not to walk that far on the wild side. "Red light district" implies unsavory activities between strangers for cash. I don't mind if thereare red light districts for those who want that kind of atmosphere. I might even visit one just for kicks but I'd never work there. To do so would be setting myself up for lots of invitations I am not interested in accepting.
Its a fantasy world, and in my version, my minds eye of this world, characters can walk in the shadows of seedy neighborhoods, quests start there, a Bounty Hunter approaches me for an illicit transaction of spice.
But thats me,and the way I like my fiction. I dont want it Pasteurized.
Tecumseh, Bria galaxy
otherwise if you don't want to play in the bar ...play at the upscale hotel
Especially seeing as how it gives 'the best' locations for Entertainers to perform.
A more generic tone 'Entertainment District' would be better, and let the PLAYERS decide if they want to make it a 'Red Light' or not.

Short answer: Yes with an if.
Long answer: No with a but.
I do not mind an area called a "red light district" that gives a bonus to entertainment healing. It is flavor, after all.
However, I am opposed to having the only zone with a bonus to entertainment healing be called a "red light district." Having this in effect would reduce the possibilities of dancing and/or playing for maximum effect. I know that my character would never be in a red light district. It is not her style. However, many players will be heading to the zone with maximum healing.
Not that this would be such a bad thing. The players who come in for "average" healing will be those whohave characters who want to role-play with classy dancers/musicians. So, even if this were to stick, it'd actually improve role-playing for us real entertainers.
But we have to consider the message this sends. It speaks highly of the attitudes of the developers who decide that improved entertaining can only be found in red light districts. They have made a great attempt to justify the existence of dancers and musicians in game terms (pity they haven't done the same with image designers). The attempt hasn't necessarily been that successful, but it was an attempt, nonetheless. To suggest that the best entertainers are those who strip or fornicate is a giant step backwards.
I have no problem with implementing prostitutes as a relaxing exercise (see also Grand Theft Auto), but it should not overshadow the importance of a pleasant dance or a catchy tune.
Besides, while I can see dancing and prostitution being tangentially related, I'm not so sure about the musician aspect.
I'm fine with it but..... IS it going to be the only area in a city set aside for ents?
That type of thing is funny once in a wile but not for everyone. Alot of ents pick the class for more "clean" fun and should have a spot to do so.
Moreover I see they planned to introduce 'player cantina'. Nice... How can we buy them just with entertainer incomes ? And what about the silly taxes ? Will we have to pay taxes too to perfom in player cities ?
I guess I'll definitly boycott player cities! If I want a world where I pay too much taxes I can have it in real world!
And red light district... It's sound more a smuggler place than one for entertainers...

Very true. If it's only a matter of wording please find some wording that's respectable. Otherwise you're telling us to be the best you must undress (and whatever else).
