Thread: Poll Is 'Red Light District' acceptable?

Remember, this game isn't filled with adults. There's -a lot- of younger players out there and I don't think it'd be a very good idea to encourage that type of play with such "impressionable" minds out there. Just imagine that the twi'lek you were feeling up was actually your 14-year-old niece being naughty on the internet.

Heh, pretty funny.

Er...no...I didn't imagine I was making an entertainer that would be going and working the likes ofBoston's Combat Zone. Come on you guys! You couldn't come up with something a littlemore uptown? Something a little moreBurlesque? It's making a big come back ya know! You still get the bawdy broads! But noooo!Yougotta go allll the way downtown for the hookers. Tsk. Let's raise the bar a bit higher than Red Light District.

I like the idea of a red light district if there are other districts giving the same boni. If prostituition is the only field my musician can work in, then I guess the developers fulfill every stereotype of a computer game developer.

I won't play ceremonial or dance formal in a strip club. Worse yet, red light district means prostitiution. Whoring, not stripping. Wow, wait, does that mean people will actually pay up front ? Lol, maybe that's the DEVs twisted way of giving us a steady income.

Ok, humor aside, this idea sucks. Make entertainer districts. If a city uses them for red light districts, fine, their choice. If another city uses them to place a theater there for ballet... great, my favorite place to meet some adult entertainers.

Erm. The idea is good, but with such a name, my entertainer would never perform there. I'm getting enough harassing tells from players who appear to mistake any dancer for a stripper already, I'm not going to hang out in a part of town that implies that I'm willing to do cybersex. Yuck. I'm amazed such a term has even made it to test center, honestly. Didn't think SOE wanted such business in their games.

Oh and, for those stating that sleazy bars and such are part of the star wars universe - fine. I could care less if there was a red light district where NPCs hung out. Or even PCs, to each their own. But then there need to be similar districts that grant the same bonuses for those players (the majority, I would expect), who do not wish to get involved into that sort of stuff.

Usually a 'red light district' is meant to refer to something a little bit more risque than simply dancing and playing music. While many 'entertaining' things might go on in such a place it should hardly be the defining theme of our professions. I don't really have any problem with those elements being in a game. However, there definitely needs to be other areas that give similar bonuses. Would you consider your local Symphony Hall, Opera House or any similar venue to be located in a 'red light district' based on the merits of having performance venues there? probably not. If it is just a generic name given to all performance areas something like 'arts district' or something similar would probably be more appropriate.

Also, the notion of a 'red light district' really seems to run counter to some of the more family/kid friendly polices that SOE/LA have in place for this game. The notion that swearing is a reportable offense but we can have a prostitution district for all of the entertainers to hang out in strikes me as a bit odd. Kinda seems like a dev with a sense of humor trying to sneak something by to me

The idea behind the proposed district (whatever it winds up being called if/when it goes live) is a good one.

But I think thata more appropriate name should take the place of "red lights district".

Of course, it really depends on the overall plans that the developers have, which we as players don't yet know. Perhaps there will be red light districts and `classier' districts.

Yes, in the Star Wars world, things are fairly seedy and red light districts would be commonplace butI don't think (especially given the young age of many players) that the game needs to use terms/descriptions that imply the things andbehaviors wetend to associate with a red lights district.

Of course, you can turn that around and argue `just because a place is named such doesn't mean you have to go there and indulge in activities typical to a real-life red light district' which is true and valid. Still, as I think most of us will agree - there's bound to be some players who will play up the red-lights theme to the fullest. It already happens to some extent in the regular cantinas; I don't think that such behavior needs encouragment or support, and utilizing the name "red lights district" does exactly that.

NO!!! Red light district is unacceptable. Negative connotations.. and I play SWG with my 11 and 15 yr old sons. I do not want to have to explain to them what a Red light district is and why they would choose to include it in a game.

I am sure my sons are not the only younger ones that play. I am sure there is anotherterm that can be used. Many cities have entertainment districts (San Diego has the lovely and vibrant Gaslamp Quarter) and that should be suffcient. but please..not Red light district.

I'm no entertainer, nor will I ever be. I'm a bounty hunter through and through, and dreading what kinds of evil things the holocron will make me do .
Seems to me, it depends on the areas. If your in a Mos Eisley like place, of course. But if your in Theed, it should probably be renamed, just because it would be more respectable. But
I don't really see why it matters though. The name has no effect the place itself. You could have a respectable Mos Eisley and a criminalistic Theed.

Hello all. I need your input on something that's coming up with regards to player cities.

You may have heard by now that politician trainers have appeared on test center. One of the skills proposed a while back is that a politician can zone all or part of a city for a special purpose. There is an entertainer specialty that gives a bonus to dancing/singing activities.

The name of thisentertainment special zoning is "Red Light District".

Please reply with your feelilngs positive, negative, or neutralregarding this name.

TERRIBLE NAME

Want proof? Type "red light district" into Google. You get a bunch of links about Amsterdam, and then some assorted stuff about sex, dirty movies, brothelsand the like.

We're entertainers, not strippers, X-rated film stars, or prostitutes. There's already enough grief from hormonally-charged, immature players harassing dancers without labelling the entertainer district as a place for such activities.

Red Light District = sex

Entertainers/Dancers/Musicians are not sex industry workers.

I don't think the name "Red Light District" is appropriate, considering the age of a lot of players. If an entire district is needed for such activities then allow player cities to be zoned as such. Normal cities should just have an"Entertainment District". If people want to engage in these activities in Theed or Coronet, let them do it in the backrooms of seedier bars.
