Thread: To all the guys complaining about guys playing females

Funny you mention that to think of Females playing Wookies is odd. It reminds me of the silly ad I see up before the start of movies these days. You know, the one where it says "Did you know, in Lord of the Rings that many of the Orcs were Females dressed up for the long hot hours in prosthetic suits?" Ummm.....so you're saying that there are no Female Orcs because they can't fight and womenaren'tugly enough to be Orcs, so they're all male?
Well, in the Tolkien mythos, I don't think that orcsactually procreate. I think they're made in vats of goo from twisted "genetic engineering" processes. Hence, the reason Saruman's orcs spring fully formed from their embryonic sac in the movie. Since that army was made up entirely of Orcs created by Saruman, then there were, in fact, no females at all. Supposedly, the original breed of Orcswere made from Elvesthat were captured and physically corrupted by Melkor many thousands of years earlier.
All of this is, of course, entirely off-topic.

I think I understand were your coming from JediMutantX3. But to be honest if your looking for true romance I don't think SWG is the best place for it. (Though I did meet my husband on a mud and yes there are RL female mudders and gamers out there.)
If you meet someone in game talk to them a bit maybe you'll get a clue to thier RL gender alot of time you can tell right away. But don't get your hopes up on meeting the woman of your dreams on SWG.
And Just keep in mind its a fantasy role playing game and sometimes its fun to play a different gender. I havea strait male friend who loves playinghisfemale tailor and dressing her up in new clothes and when I played EQ most of my characters were female but my favorite was a male barbarian.
From a pure RPing perspective, for the skilled RPer (of which I consider myself, after about 22 years of it, to be one), the more different a character is from yourself, the more challenging it is to play. I am a scientist in real life, and human, and male. Playing a human, male, scientist would not be a challenge for me -- it'd be so easy it'd bore me to sleep. Playinga non-human, female, artist, however, and doing it well, is much more challenging and, if you do it well, satisfying. Not from a "get your jollies" perspective, but from a an intellectual and creative perspective.
Just as people who are into the battle aspects of the game like going into the "challenging areas" to fight the challenging monsters, because the simple/n00b type ones are boring and not challenging, a good roleplayer isn't going to want to select an easy character to play -- he's going to pick one that is hard, and challenges his RPing abilities, so that it feels like he has accomplished something after the smoke clears. Just like the battle-happy player who wants to go after that really hard MOB that has a high chance of killing him -- because when you succeed the success is that much more satisfying.
You may be right that some people are getting strange thrills from, for example, watching their scantily-clad avatars walking around Theed being stared at by other avatars, but I don't think it's fair to characterize ALL individuals who play characters different from themselves as, by default, doing that. Because I doubt most of us do.

I don't think you understand this game at all.

Why would a male want to play a female persona other then to get jollies from the reactions they get.
Just assume the other player is a male, regardless of what gender/race he is playing, unless you find out otherwise, and you're safe, IMO. If you're right, you avoid "uncomfortable situations," and if you're wrong, no harm done.

I would say the # of females playing computer and online games HAS gone up. Back in the 80s computer gaming was probably 99% male. In the 90s a few more women started and it probably was 95% male. Now it is probably 90% male or maybe a little less... so the %age of females has gone up. But still, as you say... there is better than an 80% chance that any female PC you meet in the game is played by a male.

I'm not male and I don't play male characters, mostly because I really just love beinga woman. I won't address the issue of guys playing female characters since that has really been beaten to death. I will address the issue of SWG being a 'singles club'
When my dancer flirts with you, she is flirting with your character, she is not flirting with you and I am certainly not flirting with you. I don't need to troll for guys on some game. I get plenty of attention IRL. There are very few single women actually playing the game. Most actual women I've met are married. Women who play this game are not looking for a hookup.
Why am I saying this? Its because when strange people try and hit on ME (and not my character) it makes me very uncomfortable. It really ruins the whole immersion factor not to mention roleplayingfor me to have strange guys walk up and suddenly indunnate me with tells asking me where I live, what I do, whatever. What does that have to do with anything? If you're doing this to the entertainers, its not as nice as you think it is so please stop.
