Surgeon General's Warning: Always check the date of the post you are replying to.
But it's still a good topic, as I've seen it come up many times in game, even recently. I tend to space my songs with at least 10 seconds between lines, when doing them in public places. It makes them a bit slow, but less spammy. In private, of course, I'll crank it up a bit.
And if someone has an objection to you using sing, point out to them that it is an entertainer granted ability.

In general, I don't sing, but some evneings if it's a bit slack or am facing a bunch of blackrotted goons who don't even respond to a Hi! How's it going, %TT?? I'll sing to amuse myself.
Keep them short, 3minutes is fine for the real world, but it's a lifetime of clutter on spatial chat. Four or so lines, spaced out so each one's got time to fade, little bit of music between lines, seems to work.
Keep the songs spaced out too. Jumping from one to the next like a demented jukebox, well... you're gonna get groused at.
Somebody complains? Smile, be nice, back down, tell them "hey, didn't realise it was your turn... you go for it..." Don't get into an argument over it, its not worth it. Somebody else in the group complains, hmm, tough one. Give them a chance too?
I know if I go into a 'tina and there's an afk ent there, spamming emotes and singing constantly in a never ending loop, they're going on my ignore list pretty quick. I tend to assume other players feel much the same way.
Anyhow, if they don't like your singing, try /rap instead!

Do you know how much money the average entertainer makes?
It's very very possible these entertainers are homeless.

The way I see it, anybody can play music or dance, but singing takes a little more creativity. I mean, you need to come up with and idea for a song, write the song, then go through the painful process of macroing it.
I have a good dozen or so songs that I love to sing at events and in my guild's cantina. Heck, I even get requests for certain songs sometimes. I try to make my songs humorous and work in Star Wars references to keep it someone in line with the game. I guess I've never had complaints because I don't go to cantinas much anymore - the bots ruined that experience for me. Once I got master musician, I pretty much decided to perform when and where I wanted to perform.
I see songs as my way to stand out as an entertainer. If I can make someone smile or laugh with one of my songs, then I have entertained them, and after all, shouldn't an entertainer entertain?

I use singing as a part of my musician buff routine to keep people's attention while I buff them. The song lasts the amount of time required for the buff (about 5 minutes).
I only use it in cantinas on adventure planets - never in Theed, Coronet, Bestine, etc.
I've rarely gotten negative feedback, but a few people have told me they put me on /ignore. I have no problem with that. Some of them are pretty good friends too
When I'm in as my alt, getting a buff from myself, I usually /ignore myself so I don't have to listen to me sing.
Basically, you know if you're spamming (flooding spatial so other people can't carry on a conversation).
"Please heal me if I need it."
"Auto join is on! Invite me if I'm not in a group."
I find that MUCH more annoying than an interesting and sometimes funny poem being recited as a song.
