Thread: Why do we entertain the door?

Obviously, I don't entertain the outer door because that's just tacky. But, yes, I admit to entertaining near the stairs because I'm an attention hog.
Actually, I guess I try to get as close to the middle of the main stage areaas possible, and if there's space. I'd rather be in the middle than near the stairs. But basically these days I go wherever there's a decent amount of space, as close to the middle as possible. It's all about the ego.

I usually picked a table and played or danced for the people there. Now I'm pretty much a player-city cantina and theatere guy. Except when someone needs me or I need to try out a new song. Then I'm the back of the group at Theed.

I've always been fondest of either an alcove or that corner without tables, to the right of the stairs as you come into the cantina.
I'd rather perform in the Hotel, though. Quieter. And there's an official stage. Not that I ever go all the way back, there.

Originally ALL entertainers played/danced on the floor at the bottom of the steps. Most people in need of a entertainer came in the front door and down the steps, hence high visibility.
With the implement of the holo-craze, all these AFK macro-bots wanted to get all the healing xp (not understanding the group concept or entertaining in general) so they stood in the front entry way (exterior door) hoping the people coming in would /watch or /listen to them first.
Me personally before i was an entertainer, i never used the ones in the front. If there was an entertainer on the floor near the bar (even if it was just a master dancer) they were the ones that got watched. My silent protest

If I enter the cantina and find these types (afk or not), I /sweep the floor and /push them out the door.
My not-as-silent protest

I usually stand to one side of the bar. I like the idea of waving to or winking at someone from across the cantina. That way if they cross the floor to where I am I know they are coming to see ME!
I like to have my camera panned all the way out, so I get claustrophobic in corners. If you are panned out and standing in front of the door with your virtual "eyes" somewhere in or above the bar, then the doorway provides a good backdrop for playing or dancing. Its not about the customer - its all narcissim.

Yeah that bugs me about the corner... I like to see myself AND others coming in. But as I get into the mentality that I'm playing for the people inside not the people coming in, it gets easier.

Hey, i've got my digital watch so i'm happy... usually...
Maybe if we had AFK'ers (for any lenght of time, be it pre-macro fix or post) automatically stop, run off to a side room, and start dancing there instead, and leave the main floor for the ATKs it would help move the party inside?
I can't stand the entertaining right inside the main door, with the cantina proper being almost totally empty; course, it means I've got room for my formal dance..

The lag generated by all those people at the door is getting really bad. Even though I am no longer a dancer I still strongly believe that the AFK macro needs to be fixed. Another idea too would be provide a xp bonus to entertainers performing in remote locations such as Lok, Dantooine, and heck even some other cities in Corellia...provided of course there were less then 5 entertainers at that spot.
Oh well just my two credits!

Something like DAoC's 'camp bonus' for killing things that aren't frequently killed. For the 3 days of a trial that I played DAoC, I thought this was a great idea, and it could apply to all aspects of the game.
Combatants get the obvious exact same thing as in DAoC.
Crafters get a bonus for making things that aren't often made (this would be especially awesome for lower level crafters).
Entertainers get the bonus for performing in not-often performed in cantinas (can you imagine the cantina crawls that would come from this? 'ok guys, the bonus dropped, let's head to the next cantina!'.. the party's always moving!).
The one thing I'm not sure how to extend this to is medic xp. The med-center location *could* be done, but I'm not sure that's very useful, as they don't need to be in there for anything these days anyway.
