Thread: Entertainer Strike On Naritus
Two more notes (god I need an edit button):
1. I only tip if I feel like I need to. If I go and sit inside the cantina and heal while no one says anything to me and just sits there playing, I will only tip if I'm in a rare generous mood. If I come in and people immediately start talking to me and asking where I've been hunting and compliment my commandos and all that, I will leave a generous tip. Such is the case for most people.
2. Have you read PC Gamer's article on entertainers? It's funny cause it's true. ![]()
ROFL! Oh my god, that is great. Someone had the guts(many someones it seems!) to actually GO ON STRIKE? That rocks. Quite a bit. Shame you couldn't get everyone in on it. Oh well. I once proposed a server-wide strike to a couple friends of mine(we're on Naritus btw), and they thought it was an awesome idea. Have all musicians/entertainers/dancers either sit it out(or your idea was better, play OUTSIDE) for an entire day or longer, but really, there's no way to set it up, and there probably wouldn't be much participation.
It's not just the lack of tips that made me propose this. But I had been tired of getting treated like crap, a lot of us are. So I thought a strike would drive the point home, treat us with respect and also to remember we need cash too, and a lot of us don't like doing missions to gain money that can take forever(missions suck now, so I do hunting missions at 4+k a time, and it takes me about two hours to complete two missions).
But yes...good job!
i was one of those IN the cantina playing...
i made it very clear that i was not a supporter of the strike simply because
1.you were proving the developers case that if they added in the ability for enetertainer to pick and choose who does and does not recive our healing that it would quickly be abused to force people to pay tips in advance before we healed them
2. when entertainers go on strike, all it does is make people hate us, and move to another cantina where there isnt a strike(and they remember YOUR names and you will never see a tip from them anyways, possibly even losing the faithful tippers in the same transition)
3. if we dont heal them, then they go spend 100 credits to learn novice entertainer, go outside the city, build a camp or go to their house, or even play in the same cantina youre in just for spite, to get healed... which demeans our profession MUCH more than meager tips.
about point 1.... i am a FIRM believer that there needs to be a way to deny services to those that NEED denied... harrassers in particular...
how would you feel if you went to a resturaunt and they denied you from eating there unless you payed the waitress a tip IN ADVANCE... you wouldnt want to go back there would ya?
how would you feel if a resturaunt closed for 1 day because nobody tipped for a few hours?
same thing here... tips are given from someone that feels you deserve it, its NOT an obligation... its what seperates those that appreciate what we do, and those that do not... there is nothing that any of us can do that will make more people pay tips more often and in higher numbers... its the nature of humanity...
if cash is THAT hard for you to come by that you must resort to strikes outside cantina's, have you considered running delivery missions on naboo? theed to meonia and back, EACH mission runs about 1.2-1.8k so its worthwhile to pay the 240 round trip ticket back and forth and make up to 30 or 40k and hour(providing shuttle timing)
and before ANYONE thinks about going off about me playing in the cantina for tips while the strike was going to 'reap the rewards'... EVERY credit i was tipped was sumaraly returned to the person i was tipped by with the explination in general chat every time i got a tip that i would not accept tipos while the strike was going on because i may not agree with the strike, i would NOT take advantage of it. even to the point i took a 600 credit loss overall from bank tips (5% surcharge for bank transfers) all in all i was tipped and returned over 40k in tips in about 3 hours... people were tipping me to spite those on strike, and i wanted nothing to do with it
i was accused of playing in the cantina for the free exp in entertainment healing, to clear that up... i am a master entertainer/master musician... i have zero need for healing exp or music exp... i play because i love it, and other players depend on entertainers to heal them... i dont play to make credits... never have, never will... its the wrong profession to make cash... thats why i run delivery when i need money...
some were threatened to beblacklisted in cornett if they didnt go outside and join the strike(im pretty sure i was but this isnt why im here)... to force someone to join your view with threats like this is utterly wrong and childish, i could understand trying to compel someone to side with you with a small debate, but to say 'if you dont join us, you are not welcome here and we will remember your name' well... i think that says it all for that since i dont wanna get into a super flame war... in any case its not right to force someone to take side... taking sides is natural, but to say its our side or no side, thats not right...
anyways, i think ive said enough, this has been attepted on several servers, and always its the entertainers that lose out time and time again.

^Yes, I've noticed that entertainers in smaller towns normally get much better tips. However, in Coronet, the tips aren't evenworth mentioning.
You exchange your largegroupexperience grind bonus for tips!
In a large group in a busy cantina you will not see the good tips this is basic! In a small cantina smaller crowds that are grateful to see an entertainer you will get good tips.
When I dance I average 3-5k per hour easily, in a small cantina with a regular crowd. When I goto a large cantina I do so for other reasons, experience grind, atmosphere, conversation with other entertainers, ect..
You have to be willing to exchange the experience for the tips if you are unwilling to go the mile to help yourself you have no reason to complain about tips ever.
Tips are a bonus they are not a salary if they were to be considered a salary the command would not be called /tip and the function would be built into the game.
Excellent point on the: if you dont like the tips you are getting relocate.
EXACTLY dont expect the venue to always be the same venue. I picked a place that 90% of the time I am the only one here. Not many people to talk to when its slow so I read up on the boards or on tips and advice on SWG or communicate through ICQ or put on an AFK macro, but when its busy, 4k-8k tips. This is because the people that come to this location are normally expecting NO ONE to be in there for heals and the such. So when they do show up (and its also 90% of the players who are in that area for BIG points) they really really appreciate the fact they dont have to shuttle hop to the next cantina in hopes for a big heal.
So pick a new locale, the life of a musician/entertainer doesnt always need to be surrounded by people, in RL most musicians spend alot of time alone to get the right sound, chord, arrangment, practiceetc. etc. etc.
My RL band has closed sets for rehersal and we dont bitch and complain cuz no one tips us when we do play.
Did it work? Have your tips gone up? Are things better and your situation improved?

"...hopefully everyone will have learned their lesson."
I'm sure they learned several lessons. Among them are:
1) Wow, I can pick up novice entertainer for 100 credits and heal myself!
2) I never have to tip entertainers again now that I can heal myself!
3) The entertainers I observed outside are all a-holes... I've written down their names and will never tip any of them again!
4) I've also written down the names of the entertainers who were playing during the "strike", and I will be sure to tip them in front of the a-hole entertainers from now on.
There are probably many more valuable lessons that you taught those fighters on your server... congratulations!
"Hopefully more will realize that entertainers aren't getting treated nearly as well as other professions"
I'm sorry... what? Do you think that everyone is treated marvelously by everyone else except for entertainers? That entertainers are the only class that people are rude and inconsiderate to? Do you think everyone says, "Hey, may I please kill that paralope lair you are fighting because I'm really too lazy to find another one?" Yea... no.
It's been 48 hours now. Two days after the strike... are you getting better tips? Did people "learn their lesson" (the less you wanted)?
The lack of follow-up on this thread speaks volumes, methinks. If it had worked, you'd have come back here hooting in triumph and letting us know it worked.
So... did it? Are you getting better tips now?

*chuckle* Perhaps we need to rely on someone from the Naritus server to come in here and tell us if his tips have improved thanks to the valiant efforts of the strikers.
Now I'm tempted to create a new entertainer on Naritus just to see.
