A LOT of Entertainers don't want a combat role.
I know that some do, but putting us into combat roles will make people assume that that's our place...which could lead to a less than pleasant cantina of people yelling at Entertainers to come with their group, to kill some stuff.
The Devs have said that they don't want Ents to be bards, and they're working to stick with that concept.
I do, however, think we should gain some kind of "escape" skill that negates aggro somehow - for travelling around. Cannot be applied to anyone with Novice Brawler or Marksman.
I have been thinking this for a looong while. Same for a master Artisan or other master crafter.
Think about it ... in rl if some guy spends all day out climbing hills and surveying, a bunny rabbit can't knock him unconsious, and well, I am a rl stage performer and although I look like a fluffy girl, I can kick a door down or sprint really fastwith the muscles I have in my legs. Some sort of innate defense/escape bonus only makes sense to me.
Oh <no edit sorry> and no I don't want to be a combat Bard at all. I occaisionally venture out in a combat group. I've done some Kashyyyk quests, I'm halfway through Jabba'sand even got the Foe of the Gorax Badge. Thats fun once in awhile, but it takes alot of player skill just to stay alive even in a group of cl 80s when your a cl 1. Once in awhile its a good rp opportunity and the combatants have had fun being my 'guide' and 'guardians'. Daily? this would just not be any fun for anyone that I know.
I do want a reason for combatants to come into the cantinas, and I fear that looking at pretty sparklers won't quite do it.

Ok, first of all I have absolutely nothing against Bards. In all the games I have played, which had Bards as a playable class, they were always my favorites. Hell even my EQ2 main character is a Troubadour.
However, converting Entertainers into Bards would be a very bad move due to many reasons of which two I see as main. First of all, it wouldn’t fit the game at all. And second of all, this game already has a class which fulfills Bard’s role. They may be called Squad Leaders but essentially they are Bards, they have all the traditional roles usually associated with Bards.
Our class needs a LOT of help from Dev team, but “going Bard” would be a totally wrong direction in my opinion.
Exactly. And ask any Squad Leader how broken they are too... no sense stomping all over the tiny Squad Leader contingent that needs perhaps as much love as entertainers.
Why assume that there is -only- one way to play a certain profession?
Why not offer the option to players to choose what profession they wish to play? Why wouldn't it be possible to have a "combat entertainer" (a la "combat medic") and still retain the original entertainer professions?
Not that I'm even remotely stating that the devs would ever do so, but it would be nice if players had that choice, if they wished to eschew the performance aspect of the entertainer professions and just play on the battlefield.
Personally I wouldn't care much about a combat entertainer profession, because my favorite thing to do with my musician is to create performances and song lyrics for the performances, but I certainly don't think that everyone has to play the musician MY way, or that MY way is the ONLY way. Choices are good. Options are good. Free will is good. Absolutes.. well there just aren't any.
My two cents, anyway.
Neither did docs and look what happened to us, we're really combat medics now. I really hope they dont turn you guys into Bards. Most entertainers I know want nothing to do with combat

Entertainers should not be combat. What sets SWG different from other games like EQ and WoW is that you can choose to not fight at all.
Yeah... except nearly all support for the non-combat playstyle is getting demolished in favor of "speeding up" the game for combat players.

Yeah in the past doctors didnt need need to fight either...now the only way we can gain xp is to participate in combat /shrug
I've already felt its impact on docs I hope they dont make this huge mistakes with entertainers as well
At least the docs get a bonus to CL. Docs can still heal out of combat right? Its just that they get no XP? So there will also come a time when Docs don't need XP so they may migrate back to the med centers. Just a thought

If entertainers were to become bards Im sure they'll get a CL bonus as well.
As far as docs coming back to the med centers, its not happening. The doctor play style has changed completely. Take your new player, who has to progress from medic to doc. By the time this player has mastered doc and doesnt need XP anymore, the player has already become accustomed to a the combat doctor role. The old playstyle was getting killed once holocrons came into the picture. Tumblers and the rez/db macroers helped kill that too as well as the uber buffs. The CU's changes was just the nail in the coffin for an already dieing playstyle.
The playstyle of entertainers has changed as well. Once the holos hit it was hard to find real entertainers. I remember the cantina filled with afk entertainers all hologrinding, then buff bots came. Although these changes havent had as huge an impact on the entertainer playstyle (like the doc ones did), changing entertainers to bards will. No one will come to the cantinas since all aspiringentertainersbards will be out in the field. Sure there might be a couple of bards in the cantinas (initially) but no one will come to the cantinas and thus eventually the bards will leave. I say this because thats exactly how it happened with docs...initially you could find medics/docs but after awhile no one went so the medics left.
Oh and one more thing...docs dont need xp still have no reason to go to med centers. All forms of dots are broken. No diseases/poisons for docs to cure, no diseases & poison also means less wounds to heal. The only wounds that did exist were from new players in space...and with the last patch that was removed.
/end rant
Anyway turning entertainers to bards would be a huge mistake trust me
I'm thinking you're misinterpreting my comment . . .
I wasn't saying that entertainers should be bards . . . I was only commenting that when they changed doc to only get XP in combat, they also gave them the ability to be in combat by granting them CLs So with the loss of XP in med centers . . . they gained the ability to be involved with higher end content (namely combat and the dangerous places of the galaxy).
Had no idea about theproblem withDOTs that docs heal . . . I'm a TKM so I rarely need to be cured of anything. But I do remember the old times before I was TKM when docs would congregate around the med centers . . . even the masters who were there if anything, just there to trains others.
