Thread: Spam macros

Wow. I tell you; I simply thought of those entertainers who spam idiotically in the cantinas as misguided. Quite a few times, I've told someone that the spam was not appreciated by those of us who spend more than 5 minutes in a cantina. And quite a few times, they are apologetic and mend their ways.

But one person insists on doing it anyway. Here is a transcript of what happened (anything in brackets are my own edit so I don't trigger the swear filter).

Me: BTW, the emote spam does get annoying. I only did not ignore you because you are my ID contact. Just so you know.
Her: bah
Me: I imagine others already did ignore it, which is too bad, since you're a Master Image Designer.
Her: everyone does it...doesn't help to <whine> about it
Me: Well, if you think that adding to it helps. *shrug*
Her: like i said..i <whined> about it...NOTHING...so i figured...<screw> it...i'll join em
Me: If you think that's best. I'd hate to ignore you so I could stay sane in the cantina.
Her: wwhatever makes you happy..you'll never avoid it *shrug*

I wouldn't think that "join 'em if you can't beat 'em" would be an acceptable philosophy, but there you have it. Some people actually feel justified in their spam macro. All I can suggest is ignore them. I've not seen someone with such a cavalier attitude toward the spam like this.

I was just annoyed by this. To see such a callous disregard toward the player base by a fellow entertainer just broke my heart. I don't mind the whole divided beliefs on AFK macros, but I would think that we should all be united against spam macros.

Well, now that I'm disgusted, I guess I'll go do something else. I certainly can't spend time in a cantina after that conversation. *sigh*

Although the other person was wrong. You can avoid it. It's called /addignore. I do not miss anything by ignoring spammers. And if they need training and can't reach me, then that's just too bad. That's my take on it. *shrug*

I can tell you, my IGNORE list grew quite large in the Theed cantina and ppl started wondering why I missed their requests to join the group...

Its simple... spam is annoying - don't do it. And if you do expect to be ignored.

Spam macros: not just for the cantina

In Coronet starport:

GuyX: [shouts] Buying Holocrons, E-mail me!!

Guy Y: [shouts] Selling Holocrons, E-mail me!!

And it repeats at regular intervals. Spam only makes you look really really stupid.

My usual practice was to do a/ddignore Name before actually adding them to my ignore list. That way, if they were at the keys and still spamming, they'd know I'd ignored them and not bothered asking me for anything.

I have a blanket, no-exceptions policy I use 100% of the time. If someone does a shout macro that repeats often enough for me to notice it repeating, I /addignore 'em. Period. If someone spam-macros in spatial even without shouting, again enough that I notice the repitition, I /addignore 'em. Period.

I tried reasoning with the people who do this early on and got flamed for it, so I don't reason with 'em any more. You can't. They aren't being reasonable in the first place. Nobody reasonable would set a thing to shout, "TRAINING ALL SCOUT AND MEDIC SKILLZ SEND ME A TELL!" every 30 seconds. They are deliberately being jerks. No reason to give them the time of day or anything else helpful. If the spammers want you to help them (ever) they should wise up and stop being annoying.

Hmm. Interesting tactic.

I may have to give that a try.

I imagine that I'll start off with that without actually adding them. Give them a chance to say, "Why are you ignoring me?"

But after the sixth futile attempt to change them, I'll give up and just do that out of spite. *grin*

Best reply I have heard so far: "But I am not spamming, my macro only goes off every 30 seconds." I wish we had an intelligence test before being able to log on...

But then there'd only be about 50 players per server.

I /addignore at my own whim. Frequently for use of l33t sp34k. I hate that. And if I notice spam enough that it annoys me, I ignore.

I want the /denyservice list to operate off my ignore list. Having to re-do it every session defeats the purpose, in my never-humble opinion. So you deny someone service once...they can sneak by later and benefit from you without you knowing if they're out of your field of vision and keep quiet. Maybe I should do up a macro that denies service to everyone on my ignore list and hit it every time I play.

LOL....

It'd be nice if they had one server where that was true, at least. Heheheh.

One of my friends who plays other MMORPGs (not SWG) but is used to these types of people said the "test" could be really easy: only allow in people who show the ability to distinguish differences within, and properly use, the following word sets:

Your/you're
They're/their/there
Our/are
We're/were/where/wear
Then/than

When he e-mailed that to me I almost died laughing... ROFL...

For the internet grammar-impaired, here are some catchy tunes to help. I don't know how many of you are familiar with Strongbad, but you'll laugh...

Wait until the cartoon is over (ok, that one is not that great) and then click on the big burly arm between "back" and "strongbadia." Strongbad's Rhythm and Grammar should pop up. Each time you click on the "rhythm and grammar" album cover you should hear a new song such as "the its/it's song", "capitalization," "spell check," "your/you're" and "I don't care how they spell things on the internet."

He forgot:

sale/sell

It's 'I have the following items for sale:' dammit. Or 'I am selling....'/cry (Just one of the myriad of little things that drives me absolutely nuts....)

Heh I might not pass the then/than part. Need to add in 'any word that requires you to drop the e when you add -ing'. Examples include: dying/dieing, timing/timeing, ignoring/ignoreing etc (Ok, dying is a little bit tricksy with that y in there but sheesh! )

L33tspeak, especially in a tell asking aboutgetting mind buff, is a guaranteed ignore right after Ieither ask them if that was english or tell them I don't do leet.

Yeah, I usually just /addignore everyone that spams more then 3 times.. and I notice it, or if they are using L33t S933K then I definently ignore them.. or if someone gets mad because I'm in the middle of a buff, and they want one right now, and cant wait, what do they expect me to do? drop somone that willprobably will tip me more than them?

But spam, in my opinion is what causes ALOT of lag.. I mean in Coronet cantina there are always 10 to 15 people spamming emotes, or grand openings of stores, or selling holo's. Then add in all the the "Normal" chat plus all the flourishs / moves players do.. thats alot of information to pass through a 56k line!! It probably is bad for someone that has DSL or Cable, but I get disconnected sometimes when going into the Cnet Cantina.. hell even if I go within 100 meters of the cantina I get a ping of 1500 and packet loss of about 15%.
