Thread: I'm thinking about becoming a Droid Engineer
I'm a master armorsmith right now and I was thinking about using my remaining skill points to master droid engineer.
Why?
Armorsmith is a TOUGH profession when it comes to resources. Extremely time consuming and the last thing I want to do is pickup another crafting profession that is resource intensive and in high demand (ie Weaponsmith, Architect). Droid engineer seems like it won't see THAT much business (which is nice for me since I can't even hope to keep up with the demand in AS).
My question is:
Does the Droid Engineer profession have intensive requirements on specific resources or is it fairly generalized? For example, armorsmith requires specifically named resources (colat iron, kirrium steel, etc.). Does most of Droid Engineer call for any type of steel, iron, chemical or are most of the components specific?
And how much time should I expect to devote if I were running a droid vendor?
Thanks!

Totally generalized into types of minerals and metals with some chemicals mixed in.Unless you're making chassis or armor (the first being a required component for advanced versions of droids) you'll mostly be using scraps of resources (25 units or less per component).
Some of the stuff you will need pre-lvl 5 components.......
Ferrous and Non ferrous metals: Steel is big mid-way through Blueprints tree, Copper is a constant requirement and Aluminum is sometimes required. I would also suggest picking up Iron so you don't have to use your steel unless it specifically calls for it. Same goes for Aluminum replacing Copper.
Chemicals: Fiberplast pairs with steel in importance. IF you have the three big crafting chems (fiberplast, lube oil and polymer) in fair quantaties you'll be fine.
Low-grade ore: The only specific kinds of ore you will need are Siliclastic and Extrusive. While extrusive is used onlyto make manipulator arms and manip arm packages, almost every droid requires these and the latter requires about 75 units. So don't run out. Probes also require it. Siliclastic ore is not a hugely important requirement but if you run out you'll be sorry.
Gas: Inert Gas is the only kind of gas the DEs are interested in.
Lvl 5 and6 components start to require specific kinds of steel, alumnium, gas, extrusive ore, siliclastic oreand copper. I know Duralum Aluminum is needed for one.
Also, 3PO protocol droids and BLL droids require Duranium, Duralloy and Ditanium steel in some combination or another. BLLs have slots for 750 units, 250 units, 250 units etc etc. they're the biggest thing you'll make.
If you were wondering, the only two fields that matter to a DE in terms of stats are Overall Quality and Conductivity. Of course, it doesn't matter for us yet but in theory that's what we care about.

You must be a strange person with a thing for pain...
LOL! I guess I am too! ![]()
Check out this page:

It gives you a good sense of what resources are required for what.
The other aspect to look at is DE is sub-component intensive. A fully loaded Adv R3 can take up to an hour to make by hand, and somewhere in the range of 50 sub-components total used in it.

Technically, you CAN'T make an R3 completely by hand, since it requires factory-identical Advanced Droid Brains :-P
And those require factory-identical EM modules and factory-identical GP modules.

Well, you know what I mean. LOL Adv R3 needs 27 identical parts total for it LOL (2 identical adv brains each which need 4 identical emm and gp (18 sub-components total) and each lvl 6 module needs 3 identical emm (8 sub-components total)).
