Thread: Droid Certification System......

This is the best idea so far.

1. Deals with new players having access to droids that are too powerful.

2. Addresses the limited number of skill points elegantly without need for more.

3. Gives every player over time the ability to have wicked Star Warsy droids (sorely missing right now).

4. Gives the DE an increased customer base.

Sintrosi, I hope you're hearing this.

Hmm, that's an interesting idea...droid usage xp? Nice way to cert depending directly on your experience with droids. But will this xp be gotten similair to the way CHs make their xp(minus the taming of course).

As an alternative I posted this method a while ago. It's a way of certing droids based on the amount of experience your charactor has in the SWG universe.

I highly doubt there be more then 5% of the Droid Engineer population who would NOT want to be able to control any droid they built... Droids aren't like creatures - they don't have to be "taught" trickts or commands. They're commanded by program to obey their owner / master.

Certs can't apply to a DE. That'd be like Ohura NOT knowing how to tell the Enterprise what Kirk told her to say.

ABSOLUTELY LUDICROUS I SAY!

While it makes sense in a game sense to balance things out, as has been said many times in the past, a droid is programmable and therefore is designed to do anything weather the PC knows how to do it or not.

The solution, allow certifications based on class and profession:

Examples:

  • Only Surveyors can use survey droids

  • ANovice Elite Combat class (Pistoleer/Carbineer/Rifleman for example) gets certified for Droidekas, while lower levels can use Probots.

  • Only Elite Artisans can use crafting droids with more than one crafting station module in it

  • Artisans can use droids with only one module in it

  • Droid Engineer of course, can use them all

How about that?

Make a skill tree for the use of combat droids that requires no skill points to master, but requires a TON of XP. At each skill box allow the person new droid certifications, and eventually at master, maybe a droideka cert or something. This way droids are still acessible to all and levels players by allowing those who invest more time with their droids to get more out of them.

I agree that there needs to be certs. I don't like it many , but I agree that there has to be balance.

I like this idea, it givescounter to fill and a goal to players who choose it, instead of, "Here, have a Droideka!" (You better believe that I'd be giving away free Droidekas to my RL friends that supported my DEingand any ones joining in the future, if I could.)

I saw a post a while back where someone said that a certification NPC could stand in town and you could get a faction from doing it's missions. You could then spend the faction and some credits on certs. I half like that idea, too.

What if characters start off with a DZ-70 cert and they get droid combat xp for having in a group with them. When they get enough xp they go and spend it(and some credits) on the next cert. Don't think of it as a cert that makes you capable, think of it like a license to use something because you've proven yourself capable. How many of us could drive a car before we got our drivers licenses?

You could argue that you shouldn't have a problem telling an almost sentient machine what to do. I agreed up until one time when it took me 30 minutes of explaining to a guy how to program it.

I'd also like to add to the previous statement that DE's should be certified to use whatever they can make. Maybe we should just be able to go and purchase the license.

guys im so sorry, it was like 4 am when i made that post, and im not even kidding. Im in central, just check the time.

Ok let me clarify...........

Droid Certification System

Archangel -

I agree with Sly, your post is a contradiction of terms. Albeit droids are nothing more than a laptop, they still require experience and skill to use effectively, as does anything. You could say that ANYONE can cook anything, so everyone should get the chef schematics straight out off the ship.........so why dont they? Because they arent skilled and proficient in culinary work. I can scramble eggs.....itll taste like **edit**, but i can still do it. This is exactly why i propose the droid cert system.

Fellow DE's -

Sorry to break it to you, but the system I'm envisioning would require everyone to become certified to use the certain classes of droids. Can a weaponsmith take out a t21 and use it without rifleman? Can a BE whip out a kimogila (even if they werent bugged) and start tearing down a krayt without CH skills? DE is a crafting profession, your still gonne need the right skills in order to use certain droid classes. BUUUUT on the other hand id like to state that DE should get certain certifications just for being DE, like the ability to use Droid crafting modules straight out....and maybe a few others, i still need to toss the idea around.

Certification Skill Tree -

As i stated, the whole system would require no skill points to be spent, just a UXP. The trees would be broken down into droid classes, a tree for medical droids, a tree for combat droids, repair droids, crafting droids. Each skill box would grant access to higher level certifications exactly in the same manner as combat professions like marksman work, as you gain pistol 1 you get to use the DLT20a, maybe even allow people to whip out a droideka without the proper cert, but have it not follow commands 90% of the time, similar to the damage reduction of using a weapon your not certified for

sound good?

i want to give a big thanx for all the constructive feedback (with the exception of the rude gesture :smileyvery-happy

I can almost guarantee you Dev's wont be handing DE's back prenerf Probots without a system like this in place, plus it even opens up the possibility for elite or hybrid droid cert systems......(Dark Troopers are actually droids you know :smileywink

Arch,

Your post contradicts itself. The point of a droid is to do something you don't necessarily know how to do. You said that in the first sentence.

Then you go on to talk about certifying droids to only those classes that already have experience doing the things the droid could do. DE excepted you say.

I disagree with that premise.

In the best scenario a pure artisan with absolutely no fighting skills, but who has been around long enough can have a completely capable bot to fight for him, and protect him. That's the way they become valuable.

That's the beauty of the original poster's idea. It's so simple and addresses all the major concerns as I lined them out in the first reply.
