Thread: Droid Certification System......
See, that's what I really like about this particular idea's core premise. It's available to everyone over time, without the need for additional skill points.
Because, then non combat players can't use combat droids. That's a terrible idea.
The whole point of an artisan buying a combat droid is to protect him. All droids MUST be available to everyone regardless of skillset. The only caveat is that the powerful ones can't be available too soon to new players.
This idea solves both of those.
skill based droid certification i personally feel see as deconstructive for the one type of droid 90% of which the DE's wanna make.........combat droids. Not to mention all those hybrids out there, Chefs dont need novice medic, yet they really need a Food and Chem crafting station........and dont even get me started on a general crafting station. Plus this allows for more content, more powerful med droids, this could add a whole new layer to master professions to add more content to those that have already mastered something. Maybe at Tier 4 Med Droid, you could get a droid that regens the doctors mind faster and also decreases the time he must wait to heal again......or extend a CM's range.
a little while? your always going to have new incoming players, there is always another batch of newbies, more players who are creating a new toon on a new server and so on and so forth.
I think the one thing that makes this idea plausible is the EXTREME lack of droids in SWG and the overpowering presence of creatures........SWG looks more like the san diego zoo than it does star wars. In the real SWEU, it was not uncommon for each person to own one or more droids, and as it should be represented in this manner in SWG......thus the free skill tree. But we shouldnt allow a new toon to run and grab a droideka or super battle droid from some DE who is handing them out for free because he is grinding. This system allows for the exact same type of structure that comes with all other crafting classes (with the exception of architect, but their level of demand and restriction is regulated by the sheer cost per item and plethora of craftable items)
Sure you can let everyone grab a droideka and use it, but it should be like all other current certifcation systems, hinder the droid when the user is not certified. Make crafting droids that are of higher level than the user cause the user to fail more often, combat droids disobey orders or have a damage reduction.....
This system helps to regulate and eliminate the problem faced with the current DE scheme, where SWG has turned into pok- e -mon (im so ashamed that they banned that word).......plus it would definately place DE's where they should be, right aside Architects, our wares should be purchaseable by anyone,
Battle Droid General, I like the idea. Since it take up no skill points to use. But i have a thought.
I will probably get flamed for this one. What if there was a Pet Cert system?
4 tree system like we are used to. Everyone can be apart of it. Kinda like everyone starts with Novice ___. Well they can also start with Novice Pet Control.
1 Tree will be for Creatures. This way those who want to control CL16+ can eventually.
2nd tree is for Combat Droids(including ATST's)
3rd Tree is for Medical and crafting
4th tree deals with repair/aritsan droids. Survey, load lifters, repairs.
Each level would require a BUNCH of UXP to get to. Box 1 could be CL1-10. Box2 CL 11-20 Box 3 CL21-35 Box 4 could be CL 36+
As an added bonus, a different number of pets could be brought out at each level. 1 for 1, 2 for 2, 3 for 3, i don't know if they would allow 4 pets out. Of course they currently allow 3 pets and 1 droid so what is the difference. Or it could be a CL total.
We would have to give something Special to Pet Control masters. Just a thought.
But i love this idea. It just needs a little bit of thought. If someone at SOE would read this it would be Great.
Ok, forget this... here is a better idea to keep with the Star Warsy stuff.
Do the Cert system you mentioned with just XP (even though I am against cert system). Droid Engineers automatically have full access to all droids no mater what then.
1) Anyone can use any droid no mater the Cert.
2) Certs only tell if you can control the droid properly. (ie. the droid understands your command or not)
So You have a Newbie with a Droidika and when he does the command the Droidika does not understand. So the Droidika turns around and shoots the Newbie to death. Hey accidents happen even with malfunctioning droids. Everyone has a Critical Failure (IE. Droid Self Destructs, Droid Turns on Owner, Droid Runs away, Droid Stores for no reason). Everyone has a Critical Success (IE. Droid does the job and does it perfectly). ALL DEs Always have a Critical Success.

SirWalter
I have a few comments to those that don't like a cert system. First, if battle droids never come about, then there is no need for a cert system. Then all that is needed is to fix the current system. I think i would end up leaving the DE ranks, but that is up to SOE to decide about what new things will come.
Now, if Battle droids do come, SOE is not going to allow anyonehave the best droid out there. Especially if it can take down a Krayt Dragon. They limited the creatures to CL15 for those who don't have the skills. This will be true for droids also. So there hast to be some sort of qualifying system. Whether it be through another profession or through a cert system.
If we propose a cert system we may have a bit more of a say. And a bigger customer base. If it is through a new profession, we will be limited to who we can sell to. I would much rather have the ability to sell to everyone, than just those willing to spend skill points in a new profession.
I just happen to like the way this one was put. It makes the most sense. It doesn't seem to put a further restriction on our profession. Also anything we do with battle droids, will have to include creatures. Otherwise the CH's will cry foul.
Doing it the way purposed in this thread will allow everyone to obtain higher level creatures/droids. The only other way that i think it could work, would be a cert system that is faction based. After making a set rank, you can control a CL 35 creature/droid. This would have 2 effects. one would be to give everyone a chance to own better creature/droids without giving up skill points. Two, get people to pick a side. More GCW type stuff. Maybe they add something along the lines of being Overt will give you a +CL5 factor. Now you can have something a little more powerful. Makes sense. You are risking you neck by traveling.
The only other system i have seen was to allow, different professions gain the ability to have a droid based on their current profession level. Remember if we get really good battle droids, CH's will want to have certain creatures included also.
Well that is enough for now. Go ahead and flame away, I will make more.
maybe instead of a repair droid skill tree (let him fall under the crafting droids), allow for one tree to be general, and in it, have modifiers like the ability to call more than one droid. This ability would be priceless if ideas like the ones posted about were implemented, notably the ones about maintenance droids that would upkeep structures and harvesters for players.....or surveying droids.
Eh Eh Eh
