Thread: Droid Commanders?

No droid commanders. Let it die. It was a bad idea. Most of it's supports weren't even DEs so far as I could tell and it would just be battery powered versions of CH/BE... let it die.
I think exactly the opposite. If we let it die, we will likely never see any kind of higher-end droid combat products.
And I think that's bad (as do many of my clients).
We don't need to let this die but we do have to find out where it fits in the longer 'line' of changes.

Actually, just a touch beyond that.

At the end?

Just off the top of me head.

Seeding in extra abilities in current professions has a major imbalancing effect that the DEVs are trying to step away from. The Combat Upgrade is geared towards changing the face of combat, so that we don't have the outrageous situation that we see currently.Higher end combat droids have to have a cost associated with them, since they do not fit into the scope of how combat is geared to work. Creature Handler gates the use of pets. Droid Commander will do the same.Don't fall under the misconception that the Droid Commander / Droid Engineer relationship will be a cut and paste copy of Creature Handler / Bio Engineer. There may be items that will be in common, but they will not be exactly the same. One of the biggest differences should be the way that Droid Commanders aquire Droids. Droids will not be tamed. The Droid Commander profession will more then likely gain 100% of its droids from a Droid Engineer, with maybe the exception of a starting combat droid. If anything, the Droid Commander / Droid Engineer relationship will better emulate the Weaponsmith / Combat profession relationship.Another major difference is that Droid Commanders will not take over the ability to set the current commands on a droid. I do however see the Droid Commander gaining the ability to program new features on a droid, such as changing weapon damage types, and maybe even different tatical approaches.Without the addition of the Droid Commander profession, the harsh reality is that higher end Combat Droids will never become a reality, without the creation of some major system changes. With the Droid Commander profession, the value of the Droid Engineer profession would increase tremendously, since a completely new market would be created. A real Combat Droid market.
Maybe a mixture of the two, then? Still implement a Certification statistic, but only delegate the highest certifications to this Droid Commander profession, and still sprinkle some new combat droids among the other professions as they get through their boxes.
I understand that such powerful droids should have a relative cost associated with them, it makes perfect sense. It just seems to restrict all of the new combat droids into one profession might be limiting when considering meshing it with other chosen professions.
Now, the tricky part, how feasible is it that we will ever see a Droid Commander (or similar) profession in the near future? Is it seriously being considered?

I'll be covering suggestions on the Droid Commander Profession and a way that everyone can use every droid skin, in a later Project Droid Engineer thread.
Its kind of up in the air about when the Droid Commander profession would be added. The DEVs have completely changed how they are doing things and about the information that they are sharing about future projects. The DEVs are now trying to keep focused on what they are doing right now to enhance the game experience. The next three items that are slated for production are the Combat Upgrade, non-Combat Upgrade, and GCW. Only information on the CU is being talked about right now, along with addressing some issues that can be fixed during now and the CUs release.
