Thread: A little Background on Droidekas
It's
A
Game
I'm all for continuity (the 40+ EU books on my bookshelf and various collectibles are a testament to this).
However, I think we can forego some aspects of rigidly following continuity for the sake of making a better game.
It's all in how it's done.
I've always wanted to see Droideka be 'quest' reward items. You might, for example, have to perform 4 or 5 quite difficult quests to get the parts for it alone. Then, getting a schematic would be next to impossible. I like that it makes the Droideka (as a player used droid) something of an enigma...and maybe not something that every person will be able to run around with...
Keeping them rare as "Hey! I found this and fixed a long time after they were outlawed..." would be a very cool way of adding Droideka in the game...and could very well fit into continuity and make for interesting game play.
It's all in how it's done.

Respectfully,
I a bit confused...were you flaming me or agreeing withme? I realize that this is "just a game." But this is a game where the players are meant to live the life of a person in the star wars universe. If we were to sacrifice the Star Wars background, then what is the point of playing SWG? I mean, there are plenty of other Star Wars games out there that you can finish in a couple of hours, but dont you think that in the case for SWG, since we are meant to spend months immersing ourselves in our desired professions before we can really accomplish anything significant, Star Wars background should be probably in the Top 3 most important factors of the game?
BTW thanks for supporting my feelings on the high end droids as mission rewards and I mean absolutly no disrespect on my above comment. I would agree with you saying "Its just a game" if we were talking about Jedi Academy or Galactic Battlegrounds...I just think that SWG is different because it requires so much commitment from the players.
I wasn't flaming.
There's a lot of continuity issues that I have with the game...but I know that they will never be addressed so I'm not hugely concerned with it. SWG is a game, first and foremost. That's just how it is...
I was pointing out that there very likely is a middle ground to be had on Droidekas, assuming that the Dev team will start thinking freshly about them.
It IS possible add them:
- in a balanced way (read: truly rare...not the rarity we saw happened to Holocrons)
- in a way that embraces, not conflicts with, continuity
- is still 'gamey' and fun
I am just not sure that the Devs will take the needed design/coding time to do it this way, to be honest.
Maybe I'm wrong and they will surprise us. I'm thinking....'not so much'.

Can't a DE colect the parts of broken ones or get ahold of the blueprints of one. there not new teconolgy its been around for 20-30 years or so right? they were top of the line in epsoied 1, but would they still be by the time vader becomes a man?
This is my whole point as well. We got a cave full of these things and droid engineers are too supid to reverse engineer one of these things? There is one in pieces right at the front of the cave for crying out loud !! Get over this continuity crap and let a droid engineer have fun for once. We are hammered enough with false promises and had our only good seller nerfed long ago. Give this tripe a break. IT'S A GAME !!!
I need a slicer to go reprogram one for me.
I would agree that games are apocrypha if you want to have a Star Wars Geek contest, but recall that we're firmly in the apocrypha here ourselves. While it's nice to be consistent with the canon, filling in the voids with info from games seems perfectly appropriate in this context.
