Thread: What can the community do moving forward?

Even though we got some bad news regarding the Hybrid plan, it was at least seriously considered by the devs. We do have a lot of bright people here that can argue constructively, so how can we apply this going forward? It seems like what's in store for publish 8 is 100% non-negotiable at this point, but the life of a DE doesn't end there.

I do hope we will continue to get some fixes after 8, since there is certainly a lot of work to do. Many of us holdouts will stay or leave depending on how publish 8 turns out.

  • keep hitting the dev's over the head with our bugs and issues list.

  • beyond that, split efforts into two camps.

    • one effort is towards combat proposals which we know won't happen until after the space expansion

    • the other effort is anything non-combat that people may have an interest in pushing

i actually see one small benefit to getting this flat-out "combat droids will not happen until after the space expansion" announcement. It means DE's don't have to fight about whether they should be pushing combat or utility functionality with their immediate requests.

Yea...you hit this right on the head.

Exactly. This was one of the reasons that I pushed so hard for answer (even a negative one) sooner than later. Now we can hopefully get back to discussions that will actually matter and help to move us all forward.

I likened it to ripping of a band-aid...and I wanted to do it fast instead of in little pulls.

  • Which will again make us play the same blind-mice run-around we did before, and again will be a massive disapointment - am I alone in thinking we've been there/done that enough times? Are people really going to buy in to another round of "What do you want?"

  • We've been told what we can have for utility - and frankly it stinks. They have rejected every other idea as "too hard".

So if those are our options, no wonder every hour brings another DE to the board to say they are leaving the profession.

I haven't participated in the discussions here much yet, but I've been sitting back and watching and weighing things, and waiting for what TK said today (whether the answer was yes or no on hybrid DE). So, sad as I am that it's off the table, it is good to know that it's really kaput, no cloner in SWG can bring it back to life. (This is MHO, not telling anyone else they have to think it's good to know.).

The positive note I take from it, as I need to find something positive out of it, is that this type of proposal and tweaking by the community is THE way to send ideas to them, and to get their time and attention spent on it. Downed though the proposal might be, I agree with TK that the time the devs spent hashing it over was a really good thing, and if so many hours of tweaking and working together hadn't gone into it, I don't think it would have gotten as much dev-time (not that I know how much time it got, but I believe TK's impressions, perceptions, and communications on this issue).

I also think it helps, if we can pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off from this (yeah, I know I didn't PERSONALLY add to the hybrid proposal and so aren't nearly as emotionally invested in it (sad to see it die, all the same)), that, as the person who posted the start of this thread said, we can move on and start working up some new proposals and such. The wheels are spinning in my head as we speak (not that I'm a genius, I'm just a player who has discovered I love droids, as I went up the DE tree to try it, I fell in love with droids . . .platonically speaking, of course). I've had these wheels in my head (maybe i AM a droid? eek!) on pause for a while, as I sensed that before patch 8 we'd get some kind of answer. Or hoped. While the answer is not what I hoped for, I can look to the future with a small measure of optimism. Small, because I am, after all, a DE, but I have optimism and hope nonetheless.

So! I hope no one takes this as me trying to tell YOU how to feel (can you tell I'm female IRL yet, with the stuff I talk about? lol), it is just my reaction.

And, I hope I'm welcome to contribute. Big hug to TK for posting a difficult post. /bmoc TK421.

I guess I'm just taking the Eye of Mesra's advice to me today, and I quote "I don't know, fly casual".

Indeed...well said. The good thing about this situation is that we've really put the Devs in a situation where they had to consider droids a lot....and a lot more carefully. That can only be a positive thing for us in the long run, since they will be better minded towards our sensibilities.

That was my hope. I needed to rip the Band-Aid off on this issue and get us moving forward in a better, more positive way (to actually get good stuff in the queue). I hope it happens...and hope that any DEs out there will put their minds to any DE-related changes that could be included via JustG's roadmap for the game leading up to the SE (i.e. Smuggler revamp 'smuggle module' or faction combat droids for the GCW revamp and so on).

Not to mention....bug fixing.

Big hug to TK for posting a difficult post. /bmoc TK421.

Thanks...that wasn't very easy to write. I feel like I've let a lot of people down (even though I know it wasn't really my fault).

No it wasn't your fault, but you dont just have to roll over and accept it.

They have been wrong before, countless times.

At the very least ask for a statement as to why, so that we can debunk it.

There can be NO moving forward, until we know which direction is forward.

The Devs keep telling us what we CANNOT be, when they should be focusing on what we CAN be.

If we don't know which way is forward, being blind as we are, one step in the wrong direction could send us over the cliff....

Ok , so what evidence do you have for this statement? The time the Devs spent hashing over it?

I dont believe they hashed over it at all..really I dont, I think they just let us get our hopes up by not saying anything, and hoped it would all go away. They like in-forum discussion, they dont have to respond,

TK with his 'hat' on said they read it...but with hindsight it's obvious they didn't understand it.

How many times must we be told the Devs don't like coming here?

They planned DC and by God we are going to get it, like it or not. Runesabre lost my respect on his post about this, but if you read it again in light of what we now know, it reads very differently.

Shame on him for playing word games with us.

The future is NOW.

Do you not understand this is all the attention we are going to get for a very, very, VERY long time?

That this is the culmination of nine months of work by now THREE correspondents?

They have told us that the things we want attention on aren't possible - look at their reaction to utility droids.

We all believed that it was just a matter of time before they implemented true utility droids - surley is was part of the grand pan, right?

Wrong, they had to have a meeting to "invent" ways to make us think they were adding utility. With the exception of the barker module, the rest are fluff and filler.

None of the slicing droids (too unbalancing!), survey droids (too much work!), or any other number of things we have begged for since launch.

But oh yeah, in "Droids Rebuilt" we get a power meter, exploding MSEs, and entertainer smoke blowing modules that have no actual use.

You may have seen the Devs responding while "browsing various forums", but it has been proven again, again, and again that when it comes to droids they truly have no desire to make us any more relevant to SWG than we are now - it's just about trying to shut us up when we ask where all the promises, from medical droids that actually heal to multiple droids out for DE's to real combat droids - where all of it went.

And when we have someone, who worst of all was once one of our own, consistently twisting that knife by defending the people that put it there.

I'm glad that you have years to wait for things in a freakin'videogame that is already a good chunk into it's useful lifespan. Many of us have waited nine months or more already, and are realizing that this is simply a merry-go-round from helland that the words of the creators mean nothing in terms of our profession.

Remember whenJustG confirmed, "Yes, I know talk is cheap"?He wasn't lying, and half-way through our "big fix", the two publishes DEVOTED to us,thetalk is still cheap, and the major issues (armor nerf, chassis nerf, lack of real utility in Publish 8 droids) has proven that by some twist of logic the action has turned out to be even cheaper - actually costing US more than we will ever get back.

I have a feeling that very soon "It's in the combat balance" will be replaced with "Sometime after the space expansion", which will be the blanket reply for not only the combat professions but now the crafters as well. One stop shopping...

I'm going to go play with my clear-domed R2 and wait for him to recieve thetransmission from a little gnort to tell me that it's time to give up and click surrender, because every other veteran DE it seems has up and quit...or fallen to the dark side.

So has begun a new MMO tactic for dealing with bugs : drive the players away by giving them nerfs disguised as exciting, promised features, and by making sure the lines of communcation are as obstructed as possible - just make sure you show regret, even if you have to fake it.

I don't have any proof, but I also don't think TK is the spin-meister that some view him as. I'm not his head cheerleader, although my posts tonight have tended towards positive and supportive of his views. I just am looking into the future of the profession, and I think working positively towards the future, even if there are droughts of information, or droughts of red-names in our forum, or droughts of the things we want, is the best and pretty much ONLY way to make sure some of the things we would like get attention, and hopefully into the game. I can see coming up with 100 ideas and having them all shot down, and I can accept that, (with some sadness and some momentary gnashing of teeth, but then moving forward), IF the devs truely consider whether it would be good for the game or not or work with the game systems and other behind-the-scenes issues.

That's a pretty big IF, (If is good . . .(I like movie quotes)), but really, the game is in the dev's hands ANYWAY, flawed human beings though they may be. And not entirely in their hands, as there is LucasArts, and all sorts of other issues and corporate types. Still, I agree they've made alot of mistakes, but I also think they have created and implemented some great things as well.

But since it IS in their hands, and they have let us know in various ways, in various forms, and through various people, modes, and channels of communication, that being positive, being respectful, working together, being creative, etc, is the way to get things considered and on their agenda, as it were, I think it wise to follow that direction. (Disappointment and other such feelings I would think anyone would understand, and I would hope they wouldn't judge us DE's for being rather disappointed today.) Being constructive, is a lot more efficient than being otherwise.

This isn't to say that people can't disagree, or debate can't take place, or the devs can't be challenged, or a myriad of other things. But in browsing various forums, I HAVE SEEN the devs respond to RESPECTFUL disagreement and debate and challenge of their views, opinions, and stated facts, even.

Please understand, I am only stating my opinion. I am not telling ANYONE whether or not they should feel disappointed, bitter, angry, hopeless, unheard, forgotten, et al. This is just how I would like to approach things, and I would hope to be able to participate in a productive process of working on more proposals to send their way via our forums, which it has been said they read, and via our correspondent.

I don't believe there is any other way to REALLY affect the future of our profession the way we'd like to. And I know it would be great to have more direction from the devs, even a hint, as to what their thoughts are on battle droids, and DC, and the faction pet idea that they may not have be able to think through yet, but we don't. I feel that with the WAY and MANNER in which they've communicated that it is best to propose ideas (working together, being creative, being positive, working with correspondent, etc.), along with the information TK421 gave us in his post about the dev's answer on the hybrid proposal (it is really OFF the table, but the PROCESS used here is THE way to do it, their determination that the proposal was unbalanced and a separate 2 or 4 tree profession would balance better, etc.), I think we can at the very least begin to work on something, or somethings, new. I believe we have enough to start.

That is my hope and my belief, as I look to the future of the DE profession, I don't see a hopeless disaster. I see possibilities. But, that's just me (another movie quote for you (I'm strange that way).

There was nothing but constructive posts here, up til Pub 6, and hope sprang eternal.

When will some people stop wishing on a star?

9 months on - still broken - Chefs and BE revampes, more planned for other professions, 2 publishes for us and still virtually nothing.

What drug are you on? Please post me some. Or is it just Rose Tinted glasses?

Sorry to have to say this, but Iwas fooled by the words "Droid Invasion" as SOE labelled build 7 and 8. I to believed it was 2 patches devoted to the Droid Engineer, when in truth it was labelled as such for one fact and one fact only.

The new Battledroids with 80k HAM that ran rampart in a few cities after build 7 hit live and the addition of the same Battledroid skins as well as others to the Corvette dungeon. I have no doubt that more droid skins are in the works. (As stated by some dev on the HOC chat) but these skins will be encounter droids only and nothing for the DE to make.

The new (if any) chassis for the Droid Engineer will come after the Space Expansion. Sometime after the Space Expansion. This dont mean right after, but when SOE feel thay it is time to work on them. Could be anything from the first patch after the SE or the tenth patch.

The Droid Invasion had nothing to do with Droid Engineers.

We got combat droids you say? Pfft. They aren't exactly on par with BE pets at CL10 or lower are they? Did the combat modules added in patch 7 boost your sales? Did the combat modules added in build 7 make players line up outside the Droid Engineers to get combat droids and then be happy about how powerful they were?

We got repair and reconditioning kits? Well woop-de-doo. They aren't useful unless someone actually buy a droid and use it in combat? I have 50 Droid Repair Kits-B for sale on my vendor. None of them have sold yet, and I am one of few (or the only one) DE in my guild.

Do I still sell droids? I sell some. Do the customer ask for combat modules? A few does while most ask for utility modules.
