I wanted droids like C3PO and R2 to be my buddies and hang out with me. My robot friends would do work for me and defend me in battle while i was working on getting resources. I like groups and RP and all that but this is how I saw it for me in SWG. R2 go give all my harvestors power and money. CP3O come with me lets go survey this field you keep a look out and if we need help ask that wookie over there to defend my back.

I don't like the direct combat in this game.

I wanted to build cool combat droids and use them to perform combat in a more elegant, interesting, and indirect way.

Imagine my surprise.

Two reasons,

  1. Droids in the movies were everywhere and were very versatile. I figured everybody would want and could use a droid for something from combat to crafting.

  2. I didn't like what I was seeing with creature pets and I wanted to be part of what I thought might be the viable alternative.

three reasons.

1. I like things of a technical major. In all of the other RPG games I've played I've been an engineer, hacker, researcher, scientist, etc... Droids are the ultimate in star wars technology, so I wanted to work on and with them.

2. I enjoy making people happy. about 90% of my customers either send me a /tell or an email saying how much they love my droids (and generally ordering another). Seeing that my droid has made them happy makes me happy.

3. I enjoy interacting with other people in the game. I spend most of my time in the cantina or in the middle of town somewhere, talking with people, making droids for people, and just hanging out.

I had a little used character with lots of Artisan exp. I decided to let him build droids so I could see what they look like, and what they can and cannot do.

Another character of mine bought a surgical droid after reading what I thought was a discription of one. It was nothing like I expected. Too bad we don't have enough room to store one of everything so we can show people what they are going to buy.

The fact that I could be a Droid Engineer was half the reason I bought the game. To me Star Wars has 3 big draws: Lightsaber duels, space battles, and droids. Since the first two options are currently beyond my grasp, viva la Droid Engineer!

Also, IRLI work as a computer programmer, so DE seemed to be the closest thing in the game to that...

At first, I chose to be a DE beacuse the idea of being able to craft droids in my favorite sci-fi setting was too much of a dream come true. However, as I began to realize that the dream wasn't as nice and shiny as C-3PO looks at the end of A New Hope but in fact the profession looks more like C-3PO looks in Episode 1, with his parts showing, I stuck around for the challenge of making a sucessful character based around a busted profession. So far, I make an average of 750k to 1 Million credits a week and business is actually picking up.

I've also decide to try and take an active hand in the future of this profession by constructing a post that I hope can inspire ideas for the DEVs to look at, in hopes that they will hear our voices and give us the changes that we need to make the Droid Engineering Profession what it should be;The mechanical beating heart of SWG.

I chose this proffession so I could make for me and my friends. I only did the merchant thing to get to Master. About 4 weeks after i hit Master Probots recieved a permadeath nerf and i retired from being a merchant. Customers were incited into harrassment mode when the nerf hit and it wasn't my job to be a unpayed CSR. I still chose to play this proffession because I know one day it will be the most powerful proffession in the game and I refuse to grind back all that XP ever again to get to master.

BECAUSE I WANTED DROIDEKAAAAAAA

Ok seriously though, I had an advantage (dis-advantage?) of playing this game during its Beta phases ... when I first played the beta copy, I hadn't decided what I wanted to do. None of the "CH" issues exested back then ... no one was running around with pets (or droids) so I didn't even think about Rancors and the like.

Then I saw an R5 unit sitting on the bazaar, but at that point droids were REALLY bugged and couldn't be traded.. and couldn't be retrieved from the bazaar... and I convinced myself that *REALLY* wanted that R5 droid. So, I took a look at my skill trees and realised I wasn't particularly anything. I had some rifle skills, some scout skills and had already gone up the engineering tree in artisan to build my own bone armour (it was the only armour you could build at this point). So I thought "sod it, I'll be a Droid Eningeer! I've always loved droids in the films and always to build them anyway!". So I started the grind to Novice DE...... and cried.

But after building my first MSE droid, I was hooked on the crafting alone ... I don't know why, but I just enjoyed sitting there building these lil things.. then taming them, releasing them and blowing them up! YEAH! It was great! (initialy in beta when you "released" a droid, you just lost control of it and it moved off patroling the place you released it in for a while before vanishing ... giving you the chance to shoot it ).

Then the characters were wiped and I lost my DE.. two weeks later, the game was released. I couldn't play for the first month of release, so I missed most of the Probot issues .... and I missed not being able to post in the forums... but when I got the game, there was only one thing in my mind "I want to build droids again". I didn't care about anything else.. just droids.

Then, while playing in Bestine, I found another fun part to being a DE... dealing with customers. Making on-demand droids.. seing people run around happily with their new R2 that *I* personaly built warbling behind them. Its the most satisfying feeling I have ever got from a game and I wouldn't give it up for anything.

That is why I reacted in the way I did to all the issues we've recently had that I felt could damage this side of DE. I'm sure many others felt the same way.
