Thread: Farewell SWG
Farewell SWG. This is my last month payment for my account. You gave it a shot at the online gaming industry, but you failed to deliver. This game is about as beta as they come, if not more. No content, No Goals, No loot, No rewards, No purpose for classes other than CH and far far too many bugs broken classes missions anditems in general.
perhaps ina year or 2 when the suits let the DEVs do thier craft, this game will be playable, enjoyable and even viable as an MMORPG. Till then it is nothing more than a rushed attempt at an online game.
I would like to thank everyone here that Ive argued with over issues and agreed with. Everyone that Ive hunted the same old crapp with and died from the same old crapp with. I would like to thank my PA for being so supportiveof me, a worthless crafter, for so many months. What is mine is now yours. I would like to thank the developers for putting up with my abrasive posts and Thunderheart for not deleting them. It was a ride, but now its over.
I'll stick it out for a while longer, and if things doesn't change soon I'll hop on that boat too.
While some of your points are valid, I dont agree with others.
SWG is very different from other MMORPGs that came before it in that the game doesnt force you to actually do anything. Because of this some will view the game as having no goals andno content. If you are looking for a game to spoon feed you stuff to do with difficulty increasing as you gain experience then 'no' SWG is not the game for you (and to be brutal it was never intended to be) SWG is the nearest thing to a true multiplayer RPG that I have ever played. Unfortunately this requires that the player set themselves _realistic_ goals (or no goals at all if you are that way inclined) and as such requires something of its players that previous 'content-on-a-plate' MMORPGs didnt (basically the players ability to actually _be_ their character and exist in a gameworld, and define what thats characters motivations and goals were)
While there are still many bugs (especially in the DE profession) I find the game in general to be one of the most bug-free and stable online games I have ever played.
Perhaps this just wasnt meant to be the game for you?
Stable and bug free?
YOu have not played many online games then. SWG IS a cut above the rest. The graphics are the best I have seen, the interaction is just great, and the crafting is the best implementation of a system ever.
HOWEVER....
The game has no depth, the actual game play is on par with Shadowbane, thus there is really nothing to do after you have done it already. Its the 'been-there-done-that' syndrome that plagues so many games out there now. As for bugs, the game is crammed with them. Broken items, unbalanced professions, a non-existant insurance and death system, and a client riddled with memory leaks. (Have you ever walked into an area with about 20 people in it and the client just crashes? Happens every time to me, at least EQ could handle 150 people in a zone before barfing)
Yeah, the game is great, and I will stick with it and reccommend it, but the basics need to be fixed before adding things. One of the only reasons EQ was a success is because of the expansion packs. Just as people started to get bored, here comes a new pack. IT was a knee-jerk fix tho, as the new pack only added new things to see and an ever endless supply of new stuff to loot, other than that the gameplay was still stale. I am hoping that this story arc will supply something to do and go for. SO far the quest for Jedi is a complete joke, as only those in large guild hunting parties are actually getting holocrons, the rest of us are just sucking dirt.
Ah well, I am going to go grind more and make Master DE. Its too bad that the parameters are so high that we have to resort to grinding away rather than enjoying our time
No actually saying that EQ didn't have that much content in the first year, is saying that this is just a characteristic of the beast. They can release a game with content "A" right now. This content will be enough to keep the average, casual player occupied until more content can be added. Or, they can release the game with more content, a year or two from now. This game will keep the power gamer happy for six months to a year, and maybe give them a chance to keep ahead of them with new content. But to do this loses them the revenue they could have gotten for the first year or two from the casual players.
Since they have always maintained that SWG was specifically designed with the casual gamer in mind. They CHOSE to release the game when there was enough content ready for the casual gamer. The power gamer is NEVER going to be satisfied with the amount of content in the game any way. So why bother holding off the game to make them happy for 6 moths or so?
It was decided in beta that bugs and balance would take precedence over content.
Q said so himself that an online game of this size would take at least 6 months of live activity to work out bugs and balance. We're in about the fifth month now and SWG is doing a good job of trying to handle both bugs/balance and content.
If they devoted all of their time to tweaking what we have, we would scream about lack of content. If they changed gears and added content, we would scream that there are too many bugs and skills are not balanced.
This is my fourth online game, and my second from beta. This game has the most potential that I have yet seen and the development teamhas really learned a lot fromthe mistakes of past games. I think they're doing a great job.
Oh no, someone made me only have 2 stars... /cry

Candolar,
You say that one of the reasons EQ is great is because of the expansion packs, but they didn't have an expansion pack 4 months in to the game. I didn't get into EQ until it was 3 years old, but from what I understand there was not all that much content when it was originally released either.
I am not saying this is your case, because I don't know you or your play style, but I have to laugh when I hear about people who Macroed their way to master in 2 or 3 days, and then complain there is no content in the game. I also don't have much sympathy for the peopel who say "there is not content" in the game when what they mean is there is no "phat lewt" in the game. I do not equate those two things.
I have been playing since the day of release. I now have 3 characters which I am working on. One is a pure crafter, one is a fighter/CH and one is a Fighter/Doc. Between all of them, I have so far mastered medic, and have all the skills to master artisan, but not enough apprentice points. There is still all kinds of content I haven't seen yet. I have enough to do to easily last a year or so. By then, the first expansion should be out. I am not saying my play style is "right" , but I am saying that it is physically impossible, short of delaying the release of the game for another year or two, for the developers to code enough content for those who are going to powerlevel their way though the game.
The thing is that new MMORPG's should learn from their predecessors - saying that EQ also didn't have any content in the first year is akin to saying that the producers of SWG knew that this was a problem with another major game and did nothing to counter it in their game. Any difficulties a previous MMORPG had (other than the typical 'bug fest' that happens when testing goes from a few hundred to live with hundreds of thousands) should either be non-existant or at least have had something implemented that attempts to correct them.
I will continue to play SWG mainly because of the graphics. Not that I love them, but I am one of those people who suffer from motion sickness with many of the first person types of games but the advance graphics of SWG are apparently smooth enough that I don't get sick. BTW, yes I tried EQ in third person mode and it still made me queezy.
Farewell /Salute if ever you choose to return jointhe ServerValcyn
But remember there is no such thing as perfection when it is made by human hands
To answer your question Candolar I've played AO, DAoC,Neocron, Eve, Planetside (not actually a MMORPG) & SWG. I once loaded up EQ but one look at the graphics was enough to make me cancel and uninstall immediately (no amount of gameplay can make up for that - yes I realise how old it is) and AO is enough to make any MMORPG look stable and bug free (at least back when I was playing it anyway).
I'm not going to get into a debate about how any game should have stayed in beta until the bugs got fixed, it didnt and we bought it - deal with it. Having said that the fact that SWG has only been around 5 months _is_ relevant because all games get released early/buggy
I speak from my experience, my SWG client has very few crashes (actually I'm trying hard to remember one) if yours _isnt_ that stable you have my sympathy but I can only put it down to being a specific problem with yout platform since we are both running the same game code......
If memory serves EQ had a very troubling start (because everyone was predicting similar problem with SWG because it comes from SOE) and expansion packs arent something yourelease 5 months down the line - your comparing apples to oranges here.
Content is where you will _never_ please everyone. Personally I am sick of combat-driven MMORPGs with endless camping, uber loot, overly inflated economies and mission treadmills - in short games that only reward the powergamer. SWG fits my needs _exactly_ because I can develop my character, explore, socialise and not once does the game punish me for not 'keeping up with the herd', in short I dont actually have to do anything if I dont want to, and by the same token I can decide exactly what I want to do and when. If you want spoon fed content on demand then chances are you picked the wrong game (its nice to be able to say that to someone else after having the communities of previous MMORPGs say it to me when I expressed what I liked and disliked in a game)
