Thread: Novel Idea: JtL Droids Actually Assist Pilot Jump to Lightspeed

I've received numerous queries as to JtL droid abilities, and the one that struck me as the most relevant and glaring in its omission from JtL was the fact that droids don't make any difference in speed or accuracy in actually making a lightspeed calculation and jump.

Summed up by a regular customer:

I think droids should give you the ability to jump to lisghtspeed faster. At each level it would increase. If you read the expanded universe role playing game material you will see this stuff in there. You could then actually use lightspeed as a true escape method. In large PvP areas they could deploy gravity well projectors where you would jump at the normal speed. Just a thought

It seems that the existing architecture foo droid/ship interaction could allow this to be implemented. What say you, fellow DEs?

The offical Dev answer to this, during Beta, was that in order to make Droids / Flight Computers make a difference in the Hyperspace calculations, the minimum Hyperspace time would need to be increased.

If I recall, it was mentioned that in order to balance out the hyperspace timer with a Level 6 Astromech, the base timer would need to be a lot higher then we see it now.

Making SWG more Star Warsy. One droid at a time.

Sounds good to me. I'm willing to accept a hyperspace nerf for extra sales.

Well, I thought we were looking for somewhere where people needed droids.

Actually, why not have it that you can't JtL without a FC/astromech

As a master droid Eng. I would have to agree with this. Also a bit if a space nut as well. By pure logic you would have to have a FC / Droid to even atempt hyperspace. Not to mention a Hyperdrive?

As I think about it, it makes more sense.
Han had to enter data into a flight computer.
From the script:

Han frantically types information into the ship's computer.
Little Artoo appears momentarily at the cockpit doorway, makes
a few beeping remarks, then scurries away.

HAN: It looks like an Imperial cruiser. Our passengers must be hotter
than I thought. Try and hold them off. Angle the deflector shield
while I make the calculations for the jump to light speed.

As both a MDE and a Pilot, I have to say this is a really bad idea. The current mass limitations on most of the ship chassis force the pilots to make certain decisions as to what equipment to include in their craft. Until you get to tier 3 or so, the droid commands don't do a whole heck of a lot of good, so pilots can leave out droid interfaces to save mass without any real penalty. By forcing them to have these installed, you will be unbalancing pilots and upsetting a large majority of the people in the game. They'll buy the droids/fcs if they have to, but you can be assured that that will be ALL they buy.

There is a matter of conflict I see here with that last post. It is simply, in my mind, a matter of choice. I have mastered the rebel pilot tree, and i did so with an astromech with me the whole time. Although I did not of course see a difference in my hyper time, silly or not, it felt good going to third person and seeing (Blade) there behind me. I jumped for joy when I logged onto beta because it was the "first big step into a much larger world". Finally we could jump into space and put the "Star" back into Star Wars. I think there are more pressing concerns with droids that the devs should look at.

With the creation of personal starships, we now have a chance to us our R-units for some investigating and hacking. I would like to see in the future astromechs able to plug into spaceport computes and display whos ships are birthed there. It seems this would be a great asset for BH (and get them of some Jedi's backs).

In both the movies and the expanded universe, some of the most famous characters are droids; R2-D2 (of course), Whistler, Tonnin, Gate, Vape...all of which had great abilities that are missing from the Droids in game.

JTL has brought us closer to that galaxy far, far away...I hope they use droids to bring it closer

Maybe it would be fun that if you didn't have/use an Astromech (Flight PC), you'd have some chance (X%) of arriving in the wrong sector when you dropped out of hyperspace.

I like the droid ship repair option. I mean R2 was always working on Luke's xwing ... as for the hyperdrive .. that should be a ship componet in it self. If yours gets damaged or destroyed ... I think it only real that your stuck in that galaxie untill you can find another or repair what you have. I mean Look at Ep 1, and Ep 4 ... Its even in the movie.
