Thread: Poll Do you want to be a crafter or a combat class?
I think hybrid is the best comprimise. I use that term carefully because its unclear what it denotes which is another concern I have about this poll.By hybrid I mean that droid engineers can use all of the combat droids they can make, not that DEs shouldget combat bonuses.
If we go with the crafter option, the segment of the DE community that wants either combat or hybrid is totally screwed and only the pure crafters are satisfied. If we go with turning DEs into Combat DroidEngineers with combat bonuses and uber combat droids, the pure crafters don't get to play pure crafters.
Hybrid presents the best comprimise. Combat oriented DEs and DEs wanting to be hybrids get combat droids and crafters can still hang out by their crafting stations. Hybrid gives everyone a choice. Pure crafter or combat DE does not.
There are going to be a lot of pissed of Droid Engineers if they find they can't use all the droids they make. The poll I ran a while back concluded with the result that DEs want to be able to use all the droids they make accept for profession-specific droids like BH and medical droids (unless they have the skills to use them).
Generally, I find that the argument that DEs are "supposed" to be pure crafters unavailing. The current game "reality" is but one manifestation of possible "reality." The devs are re-engineering the Droid Engineer profession. If their vision for DEs is combat-focused, "reality" will soon get a make-over. Let's not be too slavishly devoted to the what "reality" is "supposed" to be. I disagree with the pure-crafter school of thought, but I find it more pursuasive when its expressed as a preference for the way things should be, rather than as Universal Law for the way DEs are "supposed" to be. Of course, that brings us back to the question of choice. And I think my pure-crafter buddies should certainly have a choice to play pure-crafters; just like I want the choice to play a hybrid DE.
Somebody has to command the droidekas, folks. You decide if DEs or commandos are better suited to do so.
I want and believe we can get both. If the devs make uber combat droids available only to Master DEs and then spread out the skill points needed to control combat droids, then the focus of the DE profession will primarily be crafting. People who are truly interested in combat will not be willing to spend the countless hours making MSE droids and advanced frames just to have a little bit better combat droid.
If you choose to be a crafter only... then have at it. Nobody will force you into combat. If you want to fight, then take advantage of the perk. You've earned it.
Absolutely Crafter....
Droids are designed by the DE to be used by all. I still like the idea of only allowing Elite Master professions the ability to use the most advanced combat droid. Don't make it a seperate profession, or we will never sell a stinking droid or very few at best. I like seeing my droids used. If both sides of the conflict can use them, and anyone willing to invest in getting to an Elite Master profession, there can't be calls for a nerf.
Well, I vote for hybrid...

The closest word describing how I want to be, is Hybrid.
everyone should be able to use what ever droids come out.... not just Droid Engineers.... but also dont make a carbon copy of the bio-eng, ch relationship
why force all DEs to be pure crafters?
let them choose if they use droids noone is forced to use a skill (a policeman doesnt run around shooting everything on sight just because he carrys a weapon). why should everyone be able to use droids but DEs?are DEs to dump to find the power on button on the droid (they have build)but a brawler magically controlls droids?
most people dont understand what SOE has planned for DEs, we need the droid invasion thread.
DEs will only get things added, new droids new features for droids more combat abilitys for droids and the ability to call more than one droid (not combat).
what will not be made is; droids nerfed, droids removed, droids unable to use by anyone but DEs, DEs able to call a droid army or super strong droids whiping out everything, DEs loosing the ability to craft something, DEs beeing unable to trade, DEs beeing forced to fight.
I think that DE should probably remain basically a crafting-only profession, but I want the ability to be a combat/crafting hybrid character.
If droids are going to become popular items, they have to compete realistically with non-CH pets - Including non-CH pets made by BEs with reduced level. Because I like droids and harbour sentimental resentment towards creature pets, I'd like to see high-end combat droids be more powerful than even than that. I understand that powerful combat droids will require some sort of certification system to retain game balance, and that's okay.
However... I strongly dislike the idea that a Master DE might be unable to use a droid that he or she has built. That just seems odd.
Furthermore... I point out that it is possible to build a character who is both a MasterBE and a Master CH. It is possible to build a character who is both a Weaponsmith and an <insert Elite combat profession of choice here>. (Well, perhaps not BH, but the point remains.)
I want a combat droid certification system that allows me to build a character who is both an MDE and a combatant able to use the droids that I can build. That's all.
That's not too much to ask, is it?

From what I understand about the new DE changes in development (or is it in concept?) those changes will turn you guys into another creature handler. Well, I personally never agreed with the CH being a combat class, but I never thought that there was any doubt that Droid Engineer was a crafter class. Still, I'm curious to know how you guys feel. Do most of you want to remain strictly a crafter profession, churning out usefull products for others to use, or do more of you like the idea of the droid engineer becomming the "creature handler" of droids?
Well, that's a rather over simplified statement of the facts.
All we have right now is the In Development Droid Invasion announcement of the impending thread.
And that announcement only stated what the subject of the thread would be.
It merely stated the topics for discussion, not inferring anything more.
I don't understand why the Crafters and Droid Handlers can't both live in harmony.
If the skills to use combat droids are implemented properly, we can have players take skills to use combat droids that would not adversely affect the rest of the DE profession.
If only a few skill boxes, or one branch of the DE skill tree, are required to use combat droids then players can just take the skills they want to use the droids and not waste Skill Points on skills they don't want.
If these skills are implemented poorly, that we'll have everyone making their own droids and there will be no one to sell combat droids to.
If players are required to take most of the DE skill tree just to use combat droids, then they'll just be able to make their own droids and they won't need to buy combat droids from anyone else.
I want to build droids, including combat droids, but I also want to be able to use those combat droids since I built the darn things.
I guess you could say that would make me a Droid Handler since, like Creature Handlers, I'd be 'making' combat pets and using them.
But I don't look at it that way.
I'm a crafter that wants to use what I make.
If done properly, I don't think that would make DE a combat profession.
My opinion on this issues has been echoed before too. I would like to continue to craft droids but would drop DE if i didn't have the option of using the higher level ones too. Some DE's approach this profession from a merchant perspective and have efficiently set up factories, craft a set type of droids and have a very efficient operation. For me though that is too much like work.
I -- PLAY --- this game. I enjoy the interaction with other players and really don't want to spend all my time just crafting. I enjoy making droids as much as teaching a novice about droids, answering questions about the profession, helping other new DE's etc.
So, yes, I want to be able to craft, program and use the droids I create. They are quite different than just crafting a "weapon" or a "house". When was the last time some one had to ask how to use a weapon?(other than certs) I mean really, you just point and pull the trigger. But droids are more complicated than that with batteries, "low power", programing, naming etc.
Now, there are some droid modules that I cannot use. Med 6 does nothing for me as I have only the barest med skills. And I can't use any of the BH droids as i have no BH skills. So I don't have a problem with crafting some droids and modules that I can't use. That said, I would drop this though if I could only craft the higher droids, but had no 'perks' to use at least some of the higher level ones for fun. I do enjoy group hunts with my guild. Again, just sitting in front of a crafting station and running harvester runs gives me only limited enjoyment.
Sorry for the ramble. Bottom line - let those who want to just craft, craft. But allow those who wish to use the droids they make do so too. Even at a high level. Gives one a sense of being special that way and a reward for attaining and understanding the MDE level of achievement.

You're all misunderstanding the issue.
Even those of us who want to remain "pure crafters" want to be able to use all (more almost all) of the droids that we can create. Pretty much everyone is in agreement that Droid Engineers should be able to use all (or almost all) of their droids, so that's really not the issue.
The only truely divisive issue that we have is whether or not Droid Engineers should be given a combat droid that only they can use that is better than the combat droids they can make for everyone else.
That's it. That's really the only issue.
As long as everyone can use our combat droids - US INCLUDED - then most of the pure crafters will be satisfied. We don't mind getting new combat droids - some of us actively support it - as long as EVERYONE can use them. Some of us even support some sort of cert system that would limit who can use which droids, again with the proviso that Droid Engineers are not given exclusive access to the best combat droid.
It's not that we don't want combat droids. We don't want combat players to be drawn to the profession simply to get access to the best combat droids. The solution is to make the best combat droids available to those players without drawing them into the Droid Engineer profession.
