I'm just throwing this out there just in case anyone was wondering (though I seriously doubt it); I will not be putting my name in the hat this round. Possibly in another six months, but only time will tell. I figure I'll have enough on my plate when the CU-alpha rolls in. If I were to ever put my name in for a correspondent position, I'd want to do it for you guys despite not having run a "live" shop for the last 8 months. Any correspondent selected can count on me to help with any testing.

Just pointing out something on the more objective side, Jenden and Straker represent probably the most opposite sides of the community. I am very curious to see how this works itself out.

However I am at a impasse as to whom I would choose to represent us at this point in time.

Droid Engineering is still way way way down the DEV's queue. We can't see the light at the end of the tunnel yet and won't for a long time. But you guys feel the position HAS to be filled. So we will end up wasting the next 4 or 5 DE Correspondents by letting them burn themselves out smashing their heads against the wall. For my two cents, I say just leave it vacant and save these good DE Correspondent canidates for later when they can make a difference. I'm done and have nothing more to say. One star away...

That's a self defeating attitude. It seems to me that if we concentrate on moving forward now, we may be more prepared for when they are willing to listen. We can have the answers to all their questions before they know to ask them. And if we don't start yelling now, who knows when they'll hear our cries?

I think Droid Engineering is a unique brand of crafting that I have yet to discover on any of the other MMORPGs I've played. For once, you aren't just moving stats between a minimum and maximum. You are actually deciding, through your crafting actions, what the droid can do. What the droid can be. Your decisions as a crafter are more personal than just min-maxing the available materials. It's like LEGOs, not a resource funnel. I'd really like to see this taken two or even three steps further, but even as it is right now, Droid Engineering is a unique craft. I think it would be a shame to leave it where it is, and I think the BEST way to get the devs to start listening is to get them as excited about this class as we are. If we can show them that there is something special here, they won't need to listen to us. They'll gravitate here by themselves. We just need to sell our profession better.

The other problem is that droids don't currently have a fundamental connection to the game - this is because A) the movies had droids as characters and not functionalitems and B) there aren't really any other MMORPGs, RPGs, or whatnot out there with a similar thing from which we can draw inspiration. It's up to us to figure out that place. It's there. We just don't know where yet. When we figure that out, we'll be more than just a squeeky wheel desperately in need of some grease. I think the missing link is that we are so concentrated on how the other classes would use them. Why not figure out droid uses that are themselves interesting, if not particularly useful? For instance, an encyclopedia droid that can have entries on things like trivia, cities, planets, animals, and NPCs found throughout the world and loaded onto the droid. Perhaps there could be an incentive to "collect them all"? (I'll save my other ideas for another thread).

These two things, the two fundamental things a DE correspondant needs to do at this stage (besides catalog bugs and player suggestions), don't require the devs to be closely involved. But when they do go, "Hey, I wonder what's going on over here?" we can be ready and then some.

That, and the rest of your post, are a great attitude to take.

By the way...we don't want to "yell", per se. However, if we have features/tools/systems that positively affect the fun factor, game experience or help large numbers of players....it will be more likely to gain their attention.

All in all, I think you have a good viewpoint. Well done!

Again, giving up before you even try guarantees failure. A destructive attitude is the only way to guarantee failure, you've always got a chance if you try.

And I was curious if you had put in an app JC, I can understand the lack of time thing though. If this were about 2 months earlier there's no way I could have done it.

Welp, regardless of anyone's opinion on the value of a correspondent, the position is available, was put there by SOE for a reason, and needs to be filled. End of story. I'm looking forward to seeing the new DE figurehead!

I don't think it's proper for me to put support any one candidate but I know that all of the venerable and experienced MDE names brought up so far would likely do a stellar job.

No matter who is chosen, understand that I'm available for any kind of support, advice or whatever (even if that means telling me to shut the _____ up).

(ascends soapbox)

I like to work by the diem:

"If you always do what you've always done, you'll always be what you've always been".

If we as a profession community do not at least try to change what we see as wrong or broken - then we will never know if it could be done or not.

There has been much discussion on whether a DE should lead an army of mechanics into battleor be the architect of companions to others. This forumthread is not for that discussion, but there are items that TK and others have put to discussion that can be acted upon to make our profession better.

Best of luck to all who have applied for the position - I know that we all will stand with them and work toward the betterment of our profession in the game.
