Thread: Player Correspondent Opening: Droid Engineer

Droid Engineering is still way way way down the DEV's queue. We can't see the light at the end of the tunnel yet and won't for a long time. But you guys feel the position HAS to be filled. So we will end up wasting the next 4 or 5 DE Correspondents by letting them burn themselves out smashing their heads against the wall. For my two cents, I say just leave it vacant and save these good DE Correspondent canidates for later when they can make a difference. I'm done and have nothing more to say. One star away...
That's a self defeating attitude. It seems to me that if we concentrate on moving forward now, we may be more prepared for when they are willing to listen. We can have the answers to all their questions before they know to ask them. And if we don't start yelling now, who knows when they'll hear our cries?
I think Droid Engineering is a unique brand of crafting that I have yet to discover on any of the other MMORPGs I've played. For once, you aren't just moving stats between a minimum and maximum. You are actually deciding, through your crafting actions, what the droid can do. What the droid can be. Your decisions as a crafter are more personal than just min-maxing the available materials. It's like LEGOs, not a resource funnel. I'd really like to see this taken two or even three steps further, but even as it is right now, Droid Engineering is a unique craft. I think it would be a shame to leave it where it is, and I think the BEST way to get the devs to start listening is to get them as excited about this class as we are. If we can show them that there is something special here, they won't need to listen to us. They'll gravitate here by themselves. We just need to sell our profession better.
The other problem is that droids don't currently have a fundamental connection to the game - this is because A) the movies had droids as characters and not functionalitems and B) there aren't really any other MMORPGs, RPGs, or whatnot out there with a similar thing from which we can draw inspiration. It's up to us to figure out that place. It's there. We just don't know where yet. When we figure that out, we'll be more than just a squeeky wheel desperately in need of some grease. I think the missing link is that we are so concentrated on how the other classes would use them. Why not figure out droid uses that are themselves interesting, if not particularly useful? For instance, an encyclopedia droid that can have entries on things like trivia, cities, planets, animals, and NPCs found throughout the world and loaded onto the droid. Perhaps there could be an incentive to "collect them all"? (I'll save my other ideas for another thread).
These two things, the two fundamental things a DE correspondant needs to do at this stage (besides catalog bugs and player suggestions), don't require the devs to be closely involved. But when they do go, "Hey, I wonder what's going on over here?" we can be ready and then some.
That, and the rest of your post, are a great attitude to take.

By the way...we don't want to "yell", per se. However, if we have features/tools/systems that positively affect the fun factor, game experience or help large numbers of players....it will be more likely to gain their attention.
All in all, I think you have a good viewpoint. Well done!

And I was curious if you had put in an app JC, I can understand the lack of time thing though. If this were about 2 months earlier there's no way I could have done it.

I don't think it's proper for me to put support any one candidate but I know that all of the venerable and experienced MDE names brought up so far would likely do a stellar job.
No matter who is chosen, understand that I'm available for any kind of support, advice or whatever (even if that means telling me to shut the _____ up).

Heck, none taken. I was behind Jenden last time around.
