Thread: Who Wants To Play A Droid Engineer Who Can't Use All His/Her Droids?
Sodan, I'm willing to start over. Something went awry between us on this thread.
You put words in my mouth that I didn't like. Apparently you think I did the same to you.
Truce?

That's cool with me, man. I will happily meet you half way.
Like I said, I have no problem at all with the fact that we disagree. A little more courtesy on ALL sides always makes for a better debate.
That said, we need new combat droids! ![]()
Just a quick point to make, but apparently often overlooked...
Master Weaponsmiths can use every weapon that they can craft - Just not very well.
I want to be able to use every droid that I can make, not because I want to be awesome in combat without combat training, but rather because it's unsatisfying to make little square orange 'deeds' and never see my creations out in the world.
I want to see my droids move, doing things under my command, and if they operate at great penalties because I'm not also a Master Squad Leader or whatever, I really don't care. I just want to be able to use them...

Yea, the same thought had crossed my mind, I like the idea, though I do think that it could be expanded (since the system is already there) to include everyone. Droids are a part of Star Wars, let everyone have them, even if its mostly just for show.
I AM NOT A DE AT THE TIME OF THIS WRITING---------------
I will prob be a DE very soon as it interests me though. Something similar to this argument is already in the game. I am an ex-Master BioEngineer. We could not use 95% of what we made. It is very hard to make something yourself and the most you can do with it is look at it in your house. Droids are different in my oppinion however. All logic would point to "if you know how to make it you know how to use it". SOE does have a tendancy to overlook logic however. A perfect example of this is the medical tree. I was a stimpack chemist when I went BE but I could not use the very stim-C's that I made.
Logically DEs should have control over all droids they make but the current game mechanics are against it.
One further thing, precendence has seemingly already been set for this type of issue.
What would you expect the answer to these questions to be?
Who wants to play a Bio-Engineer who can't use all his/her pets?
Who wants to play a Weaponsmith who can't use all his/her weapons?
Since these and DE are the only elite pure crafting professions who create offensive combat tools I think the answers should all be the same. I say offensive because balance issues are seemingly based on the amount of direct damage that a player is able to do.
"Logically DEs should have control over all droids they make but the current game mechanics are against it."
I don't believe logic dicatates this at all. I'll use a computer as an example since both those and droids are crafted tools with a wide variety of capabilities. I can buy the parts and build a computer that can be programmed and used by someone with the knowledge to do so but, I cannot necessarily program and use that computer myself once it's built.
"A perfect example of this is the medical tree. I was a stimpack chemist when I went BE but I could not use the very stim-C's that I made."
I don't believe a combat 'support' profession makes a good comparison. For this reason in my previous post I used the terms "pure crafting" and "offensive" with regards to professions. As far as I'm aware (for balance reasons) mission payouts do not increase as you climb the medic, doctor or combat medic trees. The medical support professions have long been asking for a definition of their class, be it combat or crafting so that they could justify the existance of some sort of survey ability for themselves. I would give them the third option of 'support'. In order to push them into either crafting or combat I would have had to give all medical crafting to the Doctor (with a name change for example) and then the use of all medicines above Medic to the Combat Medic.Additionally, this would require giving the Combat Medic a pre-requisite of Artisan skills and less medic than they currently need. But, SOE didn't deem this the way to go and can't really change it now.

To me, this makes a lot of sense. As the creator of the Droid, it does seem like we ought to be able to get some use out of every droid we make. We may not be able to get full use out of the KTN-41D Blender Droid that Chefs drool over, but I do think we should be able to use it even if an Armorsmith cannot. We have to be able to at least run tests to ensure that it is functioning, right?
I'm totally down with us being able to use every droid we make. I just don't think that we should necessarily be able to use every droid we make at full capacity, or even more to the point better than the profession(s) that the droid was theoretically designed for.
We are getting the KTN-41D Blender Droid, right? Right???
personally (& I don't know any of what is planned ) I was under the impression we were getting droid moduals to bring the diff levels of our driods above what could be used by non droid engineers .
I also was under the impression we would be able to use multiple droids thus giving the kiddy's ( me included ( i'm 32) fun new toy's to play with , like fast attack probots or even droidekas( pardon the spelling if it's wrong) . possibly have them leg shoot and or effect what type of damage they do , blast . energy , cold , etc.
and a dark rumor i heard was that we were getting slicer droids ( for use by smugglers ) that woiuld allow them to control the slice.
anyway's this was the wonderfull world i woke up from then i logged on and double clicked for an hour to net 25000 exp. before slitting my wrists in frustration when i realized i had only dreamed of taken on msomething bigger then a lesser dewback with my expensive tidiously built advanced probot and it not getting killed by the one addon .
please take up the cry and get me something usefull ( there were droid army's in the movies right?)
