I was just speaking w/ my DE today about this since my 88 harvesting rated r3 was significantly underperforming my expectations. Here's my data each taken from 4-6 kills of each creature type, all meat harvesting. My creature harvesting is at 45 (scout hunting 4).

reptilian flier youth
ME - 13
DROID - 16
DIFF +23%

reptilian flier
ME - 27
DROID - 32
DIFF +18

Some kind of antelope (forget the name )
ME - 37
DROID - 42
DIFF +13%

My (rather limited) testing so far shows the droid decreasing effectiveness the larger animal. Unless i was a rifleman wanting to stay covered 60m from the lair or was hunting pharples the droid does me very little good.

I'd love to know if there are strategies to improve this, and if my findings are consistent w/ what others have seen.
