No, the droid counts as your harvest.

Ive just made master BH and yesterday I thought I would relax hunting Yavin Carnivore meat while playing with one of these droids. They are awesome.

If anything else they save ALOT of time.

You CANNOT harvest while fighting, so you waste much time going from target to target after a long battle harvesting. With these droids you can get them harvesting while you are still fighting. It saves time its quick and oh, it saves time.. lots of it.

I recomend these to any of the harvesting professions.

Never thought id say this but... well done SOE.

Bought one today and did this exact thing. It gets about 10% more than I can too. I'll be using it as much as my tanks.

how many harvesting modules can you fit into a droid and what combined ability should we be aiming for?

Max number of module in a droid is 6 in Adv R3.
There is a Thread here saying that one of those with an harvesting rating of a total of 102 harvest +/- 18% more than the player with a scout with harvest 4.

For the combo, I think best is with trapping module and maybe storage, as the droid can store what he harvest in his storage module if he has one.

I read somewhere yesterday that you can get a +120 harvest droid and that it will give a 20% bonus to its masters harvest stats. It even takes veghash into account.

My BE altwas getting a bonus with a 99 rated R3. and when I ate Veghash it went up proportionally. I too am a melee harvester and will be using this 4k plus little buddy to harvest while I still fight. Another big bug is that a BE can harvest from a SampleKilled corpse using one of these.
