Shian, hate to break it to you, but droids are not for everyone. Utility droids are, yes. Combat droids, no. Go read just a fraction of the EU material and you'll quickly learn this. In fact, given the time span that Galaxies is situated in, Combat droids are explicitly outlawed by the empire. Having one of any form is close to a certain death warrant in this time span. the only "combat droids" you get are those controled by the empire and local government authorities for law-enforcement purposes.
At this time in the galaxy the Empire has outlawed just about everything. Obviously their laws don't really matter because they could never enforce such laws (cloning, weaponry, and spices would all be banned by the empire).
Care Factor about "SW continuity" - ZERO.
Care Factor about Fun. - Infinity.
SWG's ultimate demise will be the hodge-podge adherence to Continuity. They only do it when it suits them.
D20 SWRPG Core Rulebook, 2nd Edition, Page 359:
" Droids are usuall property, bouchg and sold like any other piece of
equipment. Although some droid owners come to thing of their droids as friends,
the fact remains that droids are programmed to server whoever is designated as
their master. To the vast majority of droids, the cocept of droid independence
is unthinkable. Without someone to command them, what would they do.
"Even so, ownership and control a two very different things. Droids must do
what they are commanded to do to the best of their ability, but their
programming dictates how they accomplish their orders. Ordered to find a
replacement part for an X-wing, a droid might commence a systematic search of
the repair bay, then the docking facility, then the neighbourhood, then the
countryside, and on - all the while thinking their actions are perfectly
logical. Droids often need very specific instructions to do what their masters
command, in a manner meeting their master's expectations.
"Occasionally, events conspire to lead a droid to independence. These so-called
self-owned droids are few, but not as rare as many believe. One might hear
stories of droids that escape their masters after years of abuse, or of an
entire line of droids that manifest violent personalities as the result of a
programming glitch..."
D20 RPG Arms and Equipment Guide, page 56:
"Most droids are specifically programmed to avoid hurting biological beings, but this is not the case for all of them. Combat droids are built and trained to cause damage, to effectivel negate opposition, and even to advise or lead other troops. Military droids usually lack the programming that prevents them from harming biological creatures, and as a resylt they are viewed with a great deal more suspicion than protocol or astromech droids.
" Ownership of military droids is controlled by almost every government; most are restircted to military personel only, and some are illegal under any circumstance."
Starwars databank on the Droideka: here
"Though the Colicoids would have preferred their destroyers to remain autonomous, the cowardly and parsimonious Neimoidians slaved the droids to their Central Control Computer, making them as mindless as their standard infantry battle droids."
If you want to talk greed turn the mirror on yourself "I'm a crafter and I want to be uber and be able to use anything I make". Me, I'm a droid engineer and merchant. See the sig. What do you think my goals are in-game? Why making money, of course.

I think you are confusing the developers with the Empire. Yes, there are similarities, but there are distinct differences. If the Empire had the control over the galaxy that the developers do, they would never have fallen.
I fully support your background information, but not your logic in its preventionof a game dynamic. Let me put it this way: I have the title of Master Droid Engineer. Wouldn't I have the ability to make, or at the least, reverse-engineer a Droideka? If I build one, that is between me and the Empire. It is between me and the smugglers that I hire to get these destroyers out to others. It is between me and the local CorSec authorities, or the militia where I live andtest my shady basement creations. It is between me and the end-user who complains that with the full autonomous version, it turned on him in battle. It is not between me and a rulebook. That is the difference between fun and work.
Itshouldn't mean that there is some artificial block that prevents me from doing something illegal. I say "all hail the Star Wars continuity and the EU". That doesn't mean our gaming fun should consist of a lobotomy. Use those game rules for good, not evil, bubba.
Seems like we had two choices (since increasing the combat power of combat professions was not an option).
1) Hybrid crafter/combat
2) separate crafter and combat classes..
Since there was acrowd that was so vocal against 1), we get 2) as the only option.
So, I guess I'm taking up Droid Master in february, and keeping DE.. and a big FU to people who were against 1) in the hopes of making millions of credits selling to another class.. cos I'll make my own **edit** droids, and use them too.. I'll just have to spend more skillpoints to do it.
OH, and there **edit** well better be CL 70 combat droids, or the devs are gonna hear about it!.
