The D6 system most enemies are carrying around blasters that do between 5D and 6D damage (which is an opposed roll against your strength of usually around 3D or 4D). This means that if you get hit, there's a pretty good chance of it doing damage. The difference between what you get on your strength and what they get on their damage depends on how badly you're hurt. for example, 1-2 point difference and you're just stunned (no lasting damage but all your skills/attributes suffer for a round of combat), 3-6 or so (can never remember the exact ranges) and you're "wounded" (can still fight but you're down 1D to all your skills/attributes till you get healed up), then there's a second level of wounded, incapacitated, mortally wounded, and finally dead (it takes a lot to die, but incapacitated and further will put you out of action for a while). This generally provides pretty good deterent for rushing into combat (if you get wounded or worse you'll be "cripled" for the rest of the evening most likely), but still gives characters pretty good odds at survival.

I really liked the old Star Wars D6 game. I thought the skills system was set up pretty well and the stunned, incapacitated, mortally wnd, and death system was a nice damage system that gave the GM pretty good latitude. If the GM or players messed up and the NPCs win a fight, usually the players are incaped instead of dead, so they can be thrown into prison instead of being killed outright. This was key to my roleplayinggroup, as we wereidiot junior high kids, both the players and the GM messed up alot.
Additionally, I like how D6 characters start off pretty powerful and skill advancement is fairly difficult and almost unnecessary. This allows players to jump into fights with tough opponents and focus tends to be on storyline instead of character leveling.
Oddly, I have never played a d20 RPG.My experience is limited to old school Star Wars, MechWarrior (alsoD6), and TSR's MarvelSuper Heroes (which despite being created by the samecompany that made D&D used a percentile system in which two D10 dice were used).
