Jenden, you tried the d20 system for Star Wars? I've been getting my feet wet in it, and so far it's not too bad. But I haven't played the pre-d20 systems, so I have no comparison.
I've tried the D20 system... and it just feels too restrictive. Like D&D in space. The D20 system seems to be focused on a fight of flight type system (all non-combat skills tend not to be used in combat situations, which means non-combat oriented characters sit out half the game). Also, its got too much emphasis on melee skills (that may just have to do with the times I've played). Melee and ranged are about even in terms of viability... and seeing as how star wars is all about blasters thats not right (with the exception of jedi). Now, a creative GM can definately get around all those things, but they're obstacles that slow things down.
The only problem I have with the D6 system is you can end up rolling a few too many dice sometimes... especially in big epic confrontations. for the most part its reasonable (4-7 D6 I'd say) but I've seen it shoot up to 30-40 in extreme circumstances.
Anyway, enough of that rant.
the WEG version is much better IMHO. In WEG's version your character is just a collection of Skills, there is no levels, character classes, or any restrictions on characters. If you wanted a ex imperial commando with mad haxor skills, go for it.
i remember one of the characters someone played was a drunken ewok who thought he was a wookie, he spoke in ewook, and we had to buy a crate of comlinks for him due to every time it went off it starteled him and shot it with his thunderer pistol (6D damage unmodified).

exactly!
Let me state it categorically: All non-D20 game systems should be put out their misery and proceed immediately to out of print status.
I played the old SW D6 system and it sucked. I've yet to play SW D20 but the D20 system is easy as hell and you don't have to learn many new rules.
Thank you very much. Flame on. ![]()

Not sure how its easier than rolling a couple D6's and comparing it against either a target number or an opposed role (with the only possible modifiers being a +1 or +2)

the only D20 System i like is DnD it works cause thats what the system was designed for and follows 2nd edition rules for the most part. the other D20 games are just skins placed over the core rules to make new games which i find rather fugly.
Yep. I enjoy the D20 D&D, it feels like thats what it was designed for. The D20 star wars... I keep waiting for the trolls and skeletons to pop out.
Alas, my group is used to D&D hack-and-slash. I've had one guy die on me more than once.
