Good question Darth,

Hmmmmm, I am not sure I am giving you the best advice here, but I would seriously suggest mastering a combat profession to support youRangerhood.... then use the remaining skill pts on Medic (Unless you decide to Master TK).... If you make TKM you can add your remaining skill pts for FS stuff...

Using a Tank, such a droid or a pet is "effective" (and fun)in the early phases before you master your chosen combat profession.

That's just my 2 cents

I was recently actually a bit 'amazed' about the capabilities of combat droids.

My alt, chenir, has as you can see in my sig exactly zero combat skills. In order to get her glowing (I have 4 sp left with that template and do not really see anything outside from fs boxes, and I clearly do not like to have leftover skillpoints either ) I worked on the imperial themepark with letting my probot do all the fighting for me.

In case you do not know, one mission includes the need to kill a faamba, while this isn't exactly the most powerful creature in the game I still didn't expect a combat droid to be able to kill it without any help from my side but it was able to do so .

Yes, but a Ranger needs to Master a combat profession in able to perform its duties efficiently... Relying on pets and combat droids to hunt (unless the Ranger is MCH) is not very effective.

My suggestion had in mind that Darth, should be able to make a living being a Ranger

I need to clarify the highlighted txt... I mean: Master an Elite combat profession. /EndEdit

ok my 2 cents time

Probots I feel are good, however there is a big dissadvantage with using them, they can only do ranged attacks. If your not going to invest in a harvester driod then my advice would be to get an R3 as your combat driod as they have both Close combat assault as well as ranged. However if your wanting a close combat Droid then I would look into getting an Adv LE Repair Droid, it's attack are sololy Close combat, has a ham of 6000 making it a close combat tank, plus if you fit the right kit it can become a repair driod and a auto-repair, auto-repair status ensures the droid can repair itself while in combat. I'm investing in one of these atm, as well as a good Mobile Crafting station (trying to get a +40 Crafting station fitted in).

CH is lame as it leaves no skill points for when the creatures get past your pets. Face it, Class 10 pets suck. To get good pets and to have more than one out at a time, you need levels, eating skill points. You candrop medic ( DUMB) to get some combat, but to master you need as many points as possible.

Frankly, droids rock. I have 3. Hammer is a probot, level 18, decent HAM, great fighter. On guard he will attack what attacks me.

Then there is Spike, my R5 (unsure of number, short lil turd). He is the tank. Big HAM, good fighter, two attacks even. Finally there is Tango - my astromech, storage, med unit, craft unit, can pay the bills on my harvestors and houses, model. (unpaid commercial announcement - Straker on Scylla is a freaking genius with droids.)

Best, no skill points to use a droid. Drawbacks... one at a time out. You have to fix them and find batteries for them (not real hard or expensive).

You tell me, spend points or get something for free?

I have Master Ranger, Master Pistoleer, Master Scout, Novice Medic and 3 FS boxes full with 0 skill points left. Getting a droid helper is so much easier than finding a decent pet.

Hang on to as much of marksman as you can as long as you can. Obviously drop the lines that relate to the weapon you're not using first, then the Ranged Support line last. That way you get to keep as many of the range/accuracy/defence mods as long as possible.

Like JB says, an R3 unit with good HAM and set up for combat is an excellent wee partner. It costs next to nothing to run (ask a friendly, poor artisan to knock you out a crate or more of batteries), uses no skillpoints and they're tough as old boots.

In addition to the R3's (Erric and Ernie) I run a probot for medium-heavy and an LE droid set up as a low level tank.

The probot, being ranged, works well with my rifleman and I'll drop it at the opposite side of a target, leg it round to the far side, then call it in to attack. Gets the beasties / NPCs looking thw worng way, which I like.

The LE ? Well, I just send him in to hit lairs. He self heals, does next to no damage, but keeps critters busy. He also looks funny shuffling across the desert and punching bantha
