I understand that DE would be more fun if can make real combat droids, as droidekas or HK's, sales would grow up and fun too.

I really enjoy being a DE - I actually like the crafting and doing all the factory runs. It is often more fun to me (personally) than grinding away at the FS or Jedi goals.
I am a master DE, master merchant, and master artisan and some architect. I have NO combat skills. Even with all the bugs, I enjoy the profession and working with the people (i.e., gamers).
I make about 100k+ a day off of my droid and vehicle vendors (don't have time to make the other artisan stuff!). Keeps me in cash. Its not the torpedo-profit an armorsmith or weaponsmith makes, but I profess DE for other reasons than money.
I've been a DE for over a year (been in game almost since launch on another toon) and have no plans to change.
Biggest headache is continuallyclicking pastthat STOOPID respec box.....Later should mean next week, month, year....

Fun: I like being a Droid Engineer. There aren't many DEs out there. So getting a /tell saying "I finally found a Droid Engineer" makes me feel like a Jedi should feel, being a rare breed. Of course, there are more Jedi out there than it should be, but that's a different topic. And the idea of having an almost endless possible builds for droids is fun, too.
Income: What? We get income? j/k. My income is only around 150K per week. And I don't sell BH droids (other people in my town do). Custom orders are where my cash comes from. I just love the idea that I can build a droid to fit a person's needs, and charge a little for it. But, I sometimes have to run duty missions in space when income slows down.
And I agree with the respec pop-up. The time from buying a ticket in one city and traveling to another is not "later". Later is next week. But, with my luck, I'll use the respec token and they will introduce a new profession which everyone wants, but can't get right away.

Wow I was just about to ask some similar questions to what the original poster asked so this saved me the time
Anyway, since it sounds like I might actually be able to make a little bit of money.....even if I have to sell swoops from master artisian at first. I recently acquired that second character slot and wanted to do something besides combat for a change. Just couldn't decide was crafting profession to try since my guild already has AS, WS, Chef, and plenty of SW's too. I know that doesn't leave a lot of options but I also didn't want to have to deal with tons of resources and learning all the different stats and what resources have the different stat caps/etc. and as others already mentioned DE's are not exactly overflowing.
My plan had been one elite profession and one crafting profession, unfortunately knowing that I need MA I won't be able to acquire any medic for healing but I suppose in addition to using stims myselfI could make one of those droids that can launch stims if those still work post-cu (heard about them when I was playing with ranger pre-cu in a droid engineer post over there). So anyway, if I decide to go DE I'll be seeing you around the forums.
