Thread: The real droid method...(or, selective crafting)
I don't see any reason a probot couldn't be outfitted with a medical module. If the module fits (as intended, no cluster or stacking exploits here) then it fits.
As for sales; I make R2s, R3s, R4s, LEs, Probots, Protocol & Surgical with Med 110 & food/chem & they all sell well. People don't buy the cheapest, people buy what they want to call out, what chassis they want.
I've never understood the argument that probots should only have this and that & protocols shouldn't have anything, etc. I view droids as a chassis with modules. The chassis is nothing more than the wrapping for the real droid. I'm a Master Droid Engineer, I ought to be able to engineer a droid to do whatever is possible, rather than what some folks have decided is proper & right.
So, my Protocol with a crafting station & medical 6 modules in it is as "real" to me as others with no modules may be to them. My SWG is only limited by my imagination & the rules.

You sell a MSE for 26K? And your saying that people taking the R2 over the MSE has nothing to do with the fact the the MSEs take not even an 8th of the resources to make, yet your charging the same?
If you went into a store to buy a TV...and the clerk was charging 1500 dollars for a 13 inch...and they had a 36 inch for the SAME money, which would you buy?
(again, this isjust a fun discussion, not trying to be offensive...=) )
Not to be too antagonistic, but why bother with any fram but the R2 one? Just give us a gazillion modules and let us see how much stuff we cram into each one. From what I read, unless I am wrong, it just seems that people really don't care about the different chassis and that each one should have a purpose, and if that is the case, then why aren't all the droids in Star Wars "R" series droids with different modules?
Just like some cars have very similar chassis, and some have different one. Such as the chassis for a semi is not the same as a chassis for a car. Yes, you could take a semi chassis and build a car on it, but why would you want to? Maybe not making it possible is the answer. Maybe the answer is something where you can put a medical module in a R2 unit, but only the best 1 or 2 modules can be placed in the surgical. You can put a weapon module on an R2 (eek!), but only a low power one. I know this won't happen, but there is nothing wrong with dreaming.
It would be nice if there was some way to make each of the different chassis special in some way. I would think that the reason that the R2 series outsell the others is R2-D2, and if that is what people want, that is fine, but just as the surgical droid had a place in the universe, so did the "R" series, they were supposed to be utility droids, and in SWG would probably be those with crafting and repair modules.
I agree with ShaleDeralic, I am not trying to tell anyone how to play, but rather hoping that those with an open mind will read this and think about what they are doing, not saying that anyone is doing anything wrong, and come up with some other ideas.
Actually the droids had inherent functions early on, I believe, and they took them out...
why different Chassis? Variety!!
=)

I charge based on function. An MSE with med 110 and food/chem craft is exactly as useful to they buyer as an R2 with those modules. Why would one cost less?
I don't sell resources. I sell usefulness.

Good point.
I'm just stuck into that method of thinking because I calculate my prices on cost of resources used to make the actual droid. I take the amount of resources, multiply them by three (the going rate of resources on my server is 3cpu) and use that to figure how much it costs me to make. Then add in the profit margin, and POOF! instant pricing system!
Saves me the time of trying to guess at how much i should charge for each droid.....
I heartily recommend you take at least one other factor into account when developing a pricing scheme: The number of subassemblies you must make.
Whether hand-crafting individual parts, or using factory time to make multiples, each subcomponent adds to the complexity and cost of the final product.
I use a scheme that is similar to yours when used for non-subcomponent-containing parts. However, for any parts which use subcomponents, I use THAT calculated price plugged in to the base cost.
Essentially, each part costs: ((resource units) * (resource cost) + (subcomponent costs)) * (profit margin)
This means that as products get more and more complex, prices rise accordingly. I've found this system to be more than fair, both to myself and to my customers.

Not a chance of this happening in any significant way.
R2 is the best seller hands down, bar none. I won't slit my throat because of a dev decision I might not love.
same here but ill be openly peeved about it.
Okay, now I'm no "Star Wars expert" or anything but I've seen the movies too many times to count. But I want to make sure I have your theory correct.. You only craft droids that would exist in George Lucas' universe, because a "Probot witha med mod" dosen't make sense?
I like to think that I pay close attention to details, and I don't think I've ever noticed anyone use the can in Star Wars.. so by your theory, there are no toilets in Star Wars.. If never seen anyone shower either, therefore, no showers. So to sum up, we have a galaxy full of irregular inhabitants with horrid hygene.
You want to think that Lucas is GOD of Star Wars, but as for SWG, WE the players are GOD. We make it what we want. For all of those who are trying to preserve the "Movie feel" in SWG, I'd reccomend just stiling with the pen-and-paper roleplay and leave the MMORPGs to those of us who understand how they work.
Let the flaming begin.
Okay, now I'm no "Star Wars expert" ( thats's obvious.) or anything but I've seen the movies too many times to count. But I want to make sure I have your theory correct..(Theory? I never had a theory. I just stated what I DO.)You only craft droids that would exist in George Lucas' universe, (Actually I don't remeber ever mentioning Lucas...)because a "Probot witha med mod" dosen't make sense? (Well you got THAT part right at least..)
I like to think that I pay close attention to details,(If you DID pay close attention to details, you would've realized I ansered this next part about five posts ago.)and I don't think I've ever noticed anyone use the can in Star Wars.. so by your theory, there are no toilets in Star Wars..(WOW this analogy is in NO WAY a stretch)If never seen anyone shower either, therefore, no showers. So to sum up, we have a galaxy full of irregular inhabitants with horrid hygene. (As I mentioned above, I ansered this part by saying that anything can happen in Star Wars...but I think unusal droid configurations should be rare)
You want to think that Lucas is GOD of Star Wars, (Well, he DID sort of CREATE the darn thing. In fact all content for this and any other Lucasfilm liscensed game had to approved by Lucasfilm...of which George is the OWNER..so i guess that kinda WOULD make him god, huh?)but as for SWG, WE the players are GOD. (We are God here? Ok everyone, FIX DROIDS! What? Didn't work? hmmmm)We make it what we want. (My OPINION affects my choices, my OPINION (one that is shared by many others, I may add) is that my method makes the game feel closer to the movie. I enjoy the movies, and bought this game to feel as though I am immerssed in the Star Wars universe. THUS what I choose to craft ADDS to my enjoyment....So I.....a PLAYER...AM making the game what I want. And so are those that agree with me. And so are those who DON'T. That was never in question.) For all of those who are trying to preserve the "Movie feel" in SWG, I'd reccomend just stiling with the pen-and-paper roleplay and leave the MMORPGs to those of us who understand how they work. (OHHHH your making reccomendations for what those who DON'T agree with your OPINION to go do? Whats the matter, are you afraid popular opinion might keep the "George Lucas' Star Wars movie feel" ..and you won't be happy anymore? If you are a true example of someone who "understands how MMORPGs work" then MMORPGs are in alot more trouble than I realized. Fortunatly, I've never run into such a person, despite that I've been playing for a while now.)
Let the flaming begin. (Well here's a reccomendation for YOU.....if you end your post with "Let the flaming begin" than chances are you shouldn't post in the first place. Those who do are clearly posting for attention. And after this small response, you will get no more attention from me.)
I started this post to be creatively inteligentand thought provoking...and since your flame bait was niether, I see no need to continue.
Those of you who added to this constructively, see you on the boards!
What? WHAT??? Back off on my COFFEEE!!!!??!?!?! I have less than 59 hours to finish my Christmas shopping, and you want me to ABSTAIN FROM COFFEEE??????????????????
I....err..*ahem* ...what were we talking about?
