Thread: Who will be making the player vehicles?
It appears that vehicles will be coming out within the next couple of months. My question is will DE's be the one's who make these, or will some other profession gain this ability? Seems like this alone would be a huge benefit to the demand for DE's.
Any ideas?
I seriously hope you are wrong.

If it isn't a new profession my guess would be NPC's as the Dev's need a money sink.

I believe that the devs have confirmed that the lowest level swoop bike, at least, will be part of the Engineering tree in Artisan.
Where have they stated this? I find it hard to believe they'd put something that could potentially be in such high demand (and possibly quite complex in making) in such a low-level skill tree, unless the schematic is something like 25 steel and 5 fiberplast.
- Cars are safer. On a motorcycle, the only protection you have in case of collision is what you wear.
- On a motorcycle you have no real shielding from the elements. I guess the SWG equivalent would be that the vehicle offers you no additional protection from blaster fire.
- Low-visibility conditions are more of a liability on a motorcycle for many of the same reasons that the motorcycle has advantage in clear conditions.
- Cars require somewhat less skill to operate well than motorcycles.
- Cars offer far greater passenger and cargo space than motorcycles.
- Motorcycles can be stripped down and modified to make them lighter, faster and so forth, but it's not so easy to modify them in the other direction, to add features. Cars in this sense are more versatile.
I dunno, I think I'd be disappointed if swoops weren't at least potentially the fastest and most manueverable craft available. Speeders can have other advantages, but making them faster than swoops just wouldn't be realistic. They already won't be able to make swoops as fast in-game as they should be. Swoops are supposed to travel at up to 500kph. At that rate, you'd cover the entire map of a planet in under two minutes.
Yes I know many of us who got into Droid Engineering did so simply because it appeared to be the only profession even remotely related to the future vehicles and starships expansions...
However, after playing for this long and seeing how some of the other additions have happened. I find it more and more unlikely that DE will play any role in vehicles (other than providing astromechs to those snub fighters)
My guess is, similar to Politician, a new profession will be added somewhere. Either to the top of the Engineering tree (where so many other professions already branch off, making it a likely spot) or a completley new starting profession (ala Politician), called Mechanic or something.
Either way, no Master DE/Master Artisan/Master Merchant will be able to pursue swoops and speeders without giving up some hard earned skills. It all depends on just how complicated they make the profession. Will speeders be customizable? How many different models will be offered? What sorts of "power-ups" can they have?.. etc. etc. Sounds like a whole separate profession to me, and one I'm betting wont be related to DE unless they really, really TRY and make it so.
I wonder if speeders will be faster than swoops. There should be SOME benefit to a more complex vehicle, if indeed it becomes a M.A. item.

That would work for me. I only wish they'd get multi-passenger vehicles in soon.

While I agree that the M.A. schem should be better than the Eng IV one, it ought to be reversed. Swoops are supposed to be faster that speeders. According to what I remember f canon anyhow. (gah, someone shoot me! heh)

PS: I agree about multi passenger vehicles. Apparently carpool lanes won't be necessary... heh.
