Thread: are combat droids really star wars?

i've been watching the posts on this forum for a long time. The one thing i noticed is that everyone is crying for COMBAT droids.

Now i don't know about anyone else, but to me combat droids sounds way too Episode I. Considering that the timeframe of this game is not before or duringRepublic, but rather during the rise of the rebellion, i would place the timeframe in between episodes IV and V. Considering this, in those episodes, all of the droids that i have ever seen (besides the probot) were conventional utility and military utility droids.

I say we should drop the idea for a combat droid all together. Everyone is crying that we don't have combat skills, but in all honesty did we join up to be DE's to kill things or create? I saw a thread one time with over 100 posts, and almost ever post had someone saying they joined in because they liked the idea of creating useful droids.

Now everytime i hear a cry for droidekia....it makes me think about just how lame DE's could end up being if we were to get a lot of combat droids. In our current timeline droids are mostly used for utility.

Why change that?

If you go through the story lines there are indeed killer and combat droids. but do to the fact that the movies were based on the living charactors the their 2 droids there was not an indepth look into the combat of droids.

Krazen Nightstar
pilot/melee rouge/rebel merc

Krayth Shadowstar
pilot/Bounty Hunter/servent to one but who?

As darkness falls, Night unfolds ebone wings and wraps the world in darkness. I am a Dark warrior of my world, where the sky's are shadowed from light and rain wash's away from the evidence. You see Glowing eyes in the dark night.........perhaps the last thing you may see.

I would say it's a mischaracterization to say that 'everyone is crying for combat droids'. Certainly there are many people who are jonesing hard for 'em, and I can't say I'll be sorry to see them, provided I can use 'em myself and sell 'em to a wide range of folks. However, for the longest time we have been trying hard to get additional utility functions into our droids. It was rather a bomb that was dropped when Thunderheart complained that this would be a seven or eight week task that they don't have time for, since after all we have been proposing ideas and screaming for additional utility modules for well over half a year now.

good point...but in general those killer and combat droids (barring episodes I and II and III) are all basically one of a kind or limited in number. That is what im trying to say. I've read the source books, and almost every combat droid that is listed is labeled as "# of #".

Well, I know that alot of DE were shouting 'droideka', which makes this turnabout a little confusing.

But I have more customers than all those put together that almost every time I talk to them invariabley get around to asking when we're going to get droideka or combat droids.

And I for one never broached the subject. They did.

Due to the movies, no matter what Ep. you like to quote, droidekas are popular with the new breed of SW fan - almost as popular as R2 and C3PO.

They want combat droids in the game. Even if they ARE just a rework of CH pets. I'm not trying to justify this route. I'm just telling you what the players I deal with want.

And there are ALOT of combat oriented players around here - the demographic for most video games goes for action - i.e. combat.

So, are combat droids really star wars? In many people's eyes, YES.

Do they fit into the current timeline of this game? I don't think many people CARE.

"When Sony and Lucas set out, we said, How can we do this and not make another EQ? We didn't want it to be all about Luke, or combat, or lock our players into a class. So we created a system that would allow players to switch professions during the game, and there would be a lot of gameplay around making that change. If you want to go from architect to scout we've created a system to make that happen."

Having combat droids in the game, during this time period, is a continuity violation. Sometime after the Clone Wars, Palpatine created a law making the manufacturing of combat droid illegal. Beyond that, yes... destroy droids or droidekas are circa TPM / AOTCand are not something you'd see during the Rebellion Era.

If you look up IG-88 at the official Star Wars site, you'll find this little snipet:

"Much of the anti-droid sentiment existing in the galaxy is unwarranted bigotry, but even pro-droid activists will find it hard to defend the rights of droids bearing arms. The memory of droid armies is still fresh in many minds, and the legions of mechanized troops used by the Trade Federation and other corporate interests paved the way for legislation that eventually did away with the soulless infantry. "

IG-88 was an illegally produced combat droid, made by Holowan Laboratories. As soon as he was activated, he went crazy and slaughtered all the scientists. He became a bounty hunter, and was seen on the bridge of Vader's Star Destroyer in the Empire Strikes Back.

Hmm, all you brainy SWG trivia buffs make me want to go back and watch the movies again. I'll have to look for this one.

As far as combat droids are concerned, it boils down to this is a combat oriented game like it or not. 90% of the player base has some sort of combat skills and ask me all the time "what can I make better than a probot".

The player base is screaming for combat droids, not the DE's so much (all though I sure wouldn't mind them).

If you have been around since launch you would know the biggest seller of all time was the pre-nerf probot. This was because it was a whole lot more useful to the combat classes than anything else we can make. If we don't get something in line with this again, we just plain are not going to be a great "crafting class". I have more credits than I can spend now, but it has taken 7 months to get there. I don't care about the cash, I just want to be needed in the game. I would just like to see something added that people actually push each other out of the way to be the first in line to have one.

Yep, having combat droids in the game is probably a continuity violation. Nope, after ep2 they never actually appeared in the movies.

However, every action your character does in this game is non-official, so therefore it's probably a continuity violation. The game isn't designed to mirror the movies or the eu. Besides, things that aren't part of star wars canon now could easily become such in a year or two. New novels get relased all the time. Ep 3 is still looming on the horizon. There exists the possibility of movies exploring some of the eu material as well.

So, i guess my point is not to worry about continuity and starwarsiness to the exclusion of everything else. The combat droids will likely be fun, should we ever actually see them. To me, since i'm only playing a game, thats all that matters.

I say, bring in the combat droids. So what if it's a continuity violation... so is alot of professions in the game. How many creature handlers were there in starwars? I can think of 1 off the top of my head... that rancor keeper guy from return of the jedi. Speaking of jedi, isn't there supposed to be only4 at this point in starwars.... Yoda, Luke, Darth, and the Emperor.

In general i think im just an old time hardcore star wars fan (though im only 21 :smileyvery-happy

most of these instances of droids in the movies are from the Special editions, and honestly they sort of take away a little (though i do love it, i miss my old grainy copy of Star Wars, Empire strikes back, and Return of the Jedi. Sitting on the video shelf at my dad's house a good distance away.)

I can see the arguments for combat droids, but i guess im just in with thecrowd that loved R2-D2 and his capabilities with locks ,and computers.

*shrug*
