Hopefully not. With some of the NPC soliders I've seen on TC, it doesn't look as if we will have to hope very hard.
One of the brighter spots of these changes is that they make location matter. Rebels are simply going to have to steer clear of Imperial cities, and vice versa. This is the way the game should have been to begin with. You simply will have to think before you fly into a city that is factionally alligned.
Would you get on a plane in the real world and fly into a war-torn area willy-nilly? That's the point of these changes. Read the FAQ they posted about the changes - in it they say very clearly this is a war, and if you pick a side, you pick a side. If you are a crafter who can't defend themselves you simply need to be careful where you go in a war.

Fun thought: Coronet is the primary city on Radiant for things ... and will be Rebel-aligned at all times. Theed seems like the followup ... and will be Imp-aligned. There's also Mos Eisley, but it doesn't have quite the collection of shops, they're at Bestine ... which will be Imp-aligned. This is going to wreak absolute HAVOC with merchant sales! If you want to sell to both sides, you have to either be neutral (which the devs are actively discouraging) or take chances in one of the locations just to restock!

Assuming you mean against NPCs, yes. A diversion is all someone needs to make a quick getaway. RL peeps will just ignore it, I'm sure.

I use my old probot (one of the 820 HAM ones) to protect me against desert demons all the time. That droid's saved me from a krayt, kimogila, and nightsister at various times. Most of the time all you need is a distraction, even if its ony a very short one.

Well the "on leave" option should help a lot, assuming you can avoid the scans though.

The scans is what will no doubt be the problem in occupied territory. I don't know how the stronghold citys are reacting persuant to the changes though.
However if scanned you can be changed to combatant status. Level of troops can change drastically as I understand the intention is the deployment is to suit the threat. Thus I imagine there will be high HAM/Offensive troops left in the area on occasion, residual from another altercation.
Distraction will be key, yet if there is a high level trooper kicking around the area and you just got scanned, your droid will likely bite it with you following in a close second.
Don't get me wrong, I love the changes and look forward to pulling my probot the second I get stopped in a city just incase they find any incriminating evidence. However it looks like in addition to my backup I may be considering armor and assorted foods in the event. My droid has tanked many a gubbur, wrix, and even made room to get away from some tuskens...But when I see a whole town turn red, I think I'll be kissing my back end goodbye

I would like to "actively discourage" the devs from making this game too much of a pain in the ass to play. I resigned from the current GCW today because I was forced overt for the last time. If the new GCW changes prevent me from running my business or cut me off from my customer base... well then screw it, there are plenty of other online games around. These changes will make the PvP combat crowd happy, but aren't they worried the other 50% of the player base will leave? I am going to start researching other online games right away since the new SWG is obviously not what I signed up for.

I think you're overreacting to the GCW changes. If you don't have any combat skills, you can either not join a faction or go "on leave". If you don't join a faction you will never be forced into combat in the cities (can still get attacked by MOB's out in the wilderness, but thats to be expected). If you go on leave, assuming you're not carrying any contraband (and you shouldn't if you don't have any combat skills) chances of getting made overt are pretty slim (and if you keep a combat droid out you've got a good chance at making it safely away anyway). If you do have combat skills, you should expect to be in combat, thats just the way it works. Don't think there are any games out there that let you be a combatant without getting in combat...
I'm not sure why you mentioned the PvP crowd, unless you choose to be "special forces" (PvP enabled) there's no way anyone can force you into PvP, period.

Aye, thats the big step in the GCW changes. No more 'forced' PvP insofar as being popped overt. Mind you, from an on-leave status you can be made a combatant from a failed scan, but that factional standing will not allow other players to attack you, only enemy NPC's. The caution I'm trying to discuss in posting this is with the rise of more powerful NPC's, noncoms may very well find themselves in some hairy PvE combat situations.
Under these circumstances a factional crafter, though on-leave, still stands a good chance of being recognized while travelling through enemy territory. It certainly isn't as easy as don't go there, as the buisness and the resources control that. Mind you, I have no idea what the chances are for being caught and changed to a combatant status as I'm not on any of the TC server to see it first hand.
However, chances are I will be considering buffs and armor in addition to a droid to pull aggro. Coming across a Nova trooper as I attempt to flee the scene on bike does not equal a win situation for my DE in any shape or form. Although, I must admit, I get a great laugh everytime I have ever been one shotted off my bike attempting to flee hostiles. Something about it tickles me

I'm kinda outta the loop here, because I'm not sure what's going on with all the GCW changes.
But it seems like you can be forced into combat on a moment's notice... to protect us crafters (yes, I do have combat skills, but not much) will we be able to pull our pets and combat droids on a moment's notice also? Or (in my case, being DE and CH) are we going to have to sit around for 30 seconds getting beat on while our droids and pets wait to spanw?

It depends on what level u are and what u are attacking natually u will get wooped by stormies if u are week but a Combat Droid can help kill one when u get incaped, just use long range weapons so he does kill u right away,
