Thread: We are only a crafting class...

So freaking what? Weaponsmiths are ONLY a crafting class, yet they can make powerful weapons that anyone can use. Armorsmiths are ONLY a crafting class, but they can make decent armor that at least helps a player tank a little better. Why should the DE be limited to non-combat craftables? If it came down to it, I would say it were a good idea to let Architects build some form of defensive turret so that they can say they are contributing to the deaths of others as well. Heck, even Tailors can make clothing with various bonuses and enhancements that help combat or other abilities.

I agree, it's a bad idea to make the combat droids for DE's only, but if that's the way the devs want it to be, so be it. I will simply exploit the heck out of it until they realize it was a bad idea, then will nerf it, then hopefully make it so everyone can use they newly nerfed creations. Then we will finally have a product to sell again.

DE making and usingcombat droids would be no different than CH capturing, taming, and using combat pets.

Please everyone, don't get hung up on crafting and handler labels.

If DE combat droid usage is done similarly to CH combat pet usage, the net result will be people picking up a few DE skill boxes to use combat droids.

And BUYING droids.

"It's a good thing."

"When Sony and Lucas set out, we said, How can we do this and not make another EQ? We didn't want it to be all about Luke, or combat, or lock our players into a class. So we created a system that would allow players to switch professions during the game, and there would be a lot of gameplay around making that change. If you want to go from architect to scout we've created a system to make that happen."

Our best combat droid that would be DE only wont be near the power of a master CH pet.

I could not agree more. CH is an off-shoot of the Scout class which is technically a non-combat class given that it does not come with any weapon certs.

Those of you who want to remain crafters are certainly free to do so. No one is forcing you to take up your new combat droids (whatever those might be in the future) and march out into the hills of Dathomir. You can still craft and sell as you always have. Those of us who want to explore other aspects of the game will, however, have the ability to do so.

I think it's fair since we make MUCH MUCH less money than most other crafting professions. Except maybe chefs lol.

I think this depends on your server and how you run your business. I've made as much as 1 million in droid sales in one day before, my average is probably around 200-300k. I make more money than most of the weaponsmithsI know (and about all the architects I know). I know economies differ by server so this may be why we see such different income levels. Oh, and to give you an idea of my prices protocols and probots are generaly around 13-14k depending on what modules they want, R2's are generally 10-11k.

I see your example of weaponsmith making powerful weapons that OTHER combat professions use. That is true, but those other combat professions have to earn the right to use those more powerful weapons. Right now the probot is equivilent to the CDEF weapons, in that anyone can use them. If the DEs start to make more powerful combat droids, then some system needs to be put in place where people have to EARN the right to use the more powerful fighters.. The question that needs to be answered is, Do you graft a certification on to existing fighters skill trees? Do you create a whole new class of droid handler? Or do you graft the certification system on to DE? Just letting DEs start making metal rancors that anyone can use is just not a good idea, without some kind of a certification system.

True, we play the game as we want to. So if you want to play this way, why not just
be a creature handler then?

The point about agruing against the combat droids is to challenge the devs to not just
leave it there. Droids should be DIFFERENT from a creature pet and when they do finally
add/change these droids, we want them to give us distinquishing functionalities, rather than
just a metallic Rancor.

I think this is the part that many DE's just aren't seeing. They are blinded by the thought of power. I personaly agree that their does need to be a cert. system of some kind for them, but figuring it out is the trick. I don't like the idea of a new profession (droid handler just doesn't make any sense). I also don't like the idea of being put into the DE skill tree (as mentioned weaponsmiths and BE's don't get automatically certed for what they make, no reason we should either, and as I've stated many times, it would wreak havoc on the profession). I think probably the best choice would be to cert them to masters of elite combat professions (or, a rather random thought, master politicians.... they've always been the ones in the movies with the combat droids).

I was just thinking after I posted this. I said that there could be a certification system grafted on to the combat profession trees, but what about the other classes. A doctor who needs to go to his harvester or factory needs protection. The chances are, he will not have mastered a combat profession, so putting droid certs on master combat proffesions would leave him out in the cold. The same for anyone else who is a "pure" crafter. They would like the protection, but don't want to move very high in a combat tree. These are the guys that could use a combat droid the most. Also they are the ones who would most logically have gone out and bought a droid in "real life"

I think that as long as you leave something similar to the level of the probot available to everyone that would work out great. They may not solo stuff by themselves (though they do deserve more cedit that most people give them) they will save your ass. My probot has saved me from a: krayt, kimogila, dark jedi master, tuskens of all shapes and sizes, scyks, tusk cats, tortons, night sisters, singing mountain clan, rancors, a wide assortment of nasty npc types, and many other creatures. The trick is to just have them guard you, they will generally pull anything that attacks you instantly, so you never even enter combat. depending on how big the attacker is you may or may not be able to have the droid withdraw as your running away as fast as you can. I do this fairly regularly with my probot (as I have no combat skills whatsoever) and have great success with it.

Thanks for the info. I have never had a probot and had no idea what its capabilites actually were. It sounds like they fill the non-combatant protection roll quite well.

Since non-combatants shouldn't be out picking fights anyway, then putting certs in the combat professions would probably be the best idea. Then the question comes down to, will there be a series of increasiningly tough combat droids? or just one level? If it is a series then the certs need to include more than just master combat profession so a player can build up to the tougher guys. If it is just one level, then putting the cert in master combat professions should work fine.

"True, we play the game as we want to. So if you want to play this way, why not just be a creature handler then?"

Because I'm a droid engineer and this is Star Wars. as such, I want droids. If you want only to craft, why not be a tailor?

Look, although the original poster's points were poorly stated and not well thought out, the concept behind them is a valid one. A droid handler class is a terrible idea. I'm not sure that turning DEs into metal CHs is the right answer either... but it's a step in the right direction toward eliminating the petwars and returning this game to the realm of true sci-fi. Although I think a cert system might work a bit better, for those of you without a combat profesion, you are denied access to your most powerful creations. And yes, I know, there are those who use the "BEs cannot use their creations" argument, but droids are an altogether different animal so to speak. They are programmed to obey. Animals have their own nuances and would logically require the specialized skills of a tamer.

Whatever happens, our profession is due for a major retooling and inevitably, half of us are going to be angry with the result.
