Thread: This Division is killing us
Droid Engineers have been a united group since open beta. We all stood together and waged war on the development teams. Of course, it did very little good.
But now, we have their attention and Thunderheart shatters our world with a few simple questions.
The debate rages about the DE-only combat droid. I have never seen the profession so divided among it's members.
There has to be a peaceful resolution to this debate otherwise Thunderheart and the gang will either make a decision without us, or drag their feet trying to figure out how to make us happy.
I doubt there is a peaceful solution...
The two sides on the DE only droid are diametrically opposed.....I don't think there is a middle ground....you either have a DE only droid....or you don't.
Because we rage fight and argue on this one point doesn't mean we don't agree on everything else. Actually its a great testement to this group that we only have one thing we really fight over....and for the most part both sides have been pretty civil...though I admit people on both sides have started getting more abbrasive the last day or so.
Apart from the DE only droid there is plenty of consensus on combat droids:

Also, there are lots of people proposing comprimise solutions on the DE-only droid issue.
I'm ok with not coming to an agreement. We can have sintrosi convery where we agree and where the agreement ends. She can just states the concerns of both sides.
Droids are for everyone, they are one of the most democratic parts of the game. The right place for this debate is in SWG Discussion. True democracy would demand it. If the consensus by all players who have a vested interest in droids (which is, right now, all players in SWG period) is that DEs should have their own combat droid, then that is not only a more significant sample of the player base but a fundamentally different and more interesting result.
It would be good to see Arden, Sodan, Droid-Creator, Hoshi jump in and work together to take a proposal to The People.
This just isn't a DE-only issue.
I agree with you there Droid-Creator.
I must admit that I am one of those that believes that Master Droid Engineers should have an exclusive combat droid. I base my belief from the point of view of my character; Drashk, the Bothan Master Droid Engineer.
Drashk lives in a very violent world that is rocked by civil war. He has been physically injured so many times while trying to check on his harvesters that he decided to pursue the combants approach to getting things done by taking up the way of the pistol.
I havea fewquestions for all of those innon-DE-only combat droid camp.
1) From the perspective of your character, like an MMORPG is supposed to be played; Do you think you are in danger of being killed any time you head out your shops door?
2) From your own perspective; If you lived in a war torn area and had the tools to defend yourself, would you?
I know that this is only a game, BUT it is supposed to represent, at the core ofwhatwas created, what life would be like in a war torn universe known as Star Wars.
I think most of us, as DEs, agree on most issues, if not all, save this one. This is a democratic society, and everyone has differing opinions. It's human nature. It's why 4 out of 5 dentists recomment Trident. There's always going to be discussion and debate.
In my opinion, the disagreement is a good thing. The discussions (as long as they are constructive, non-flaming ones) can only help this profession. The majority of DEs that bother to post and read this board are mature individuals. I've seen little to no flaming, unlike on my server forum. Ideas and new views can stem from these debates we have.
I, for one, do not want this game to force everyone to think the same way. If you do, go take your Soma, and have Big Brother keep watch over your shoulder.
I vote that we table this "DE-only combat droid" issue for now.
Let them get everything else fixed, implemented, added, buffed, changed. After that, they can add the uber-droid if we decide we want it.
Who knows, maybe having and using good combat droids will changesome minds if it turns out to be more fun and has low negative impact.
These two items can be accomplished by combat droids useable to all professions, what makes these two items DE-specific?

**edit** lack of an edit button...
useable BY all professions, not TO

Consensus is better than compromise. But who says we the DEs have to agree at all, or that we are the right people to be doing the agreeing?

I strongly disagree with this based on my rather lengthy MMORPG experience. In theory its a good thought, but in practice it isn't. If you asked on the general discussion board right now you would get a resounding "NO". It wouldn't be based on objective reasons though. By nature most MMORPG players are a little greedy, yours truly included
They would say no because many do not like the idea of someone else getting something they cannot have in game, especially if said item would make them stronger/richer/fresher breath
The simple fact that from the characters perspective;
If I had the means to create something that was slightly better than what everyone else could use and only useable by me, I would build it.
Take a look at what I composed on this thread, but be warned its pretty long.

I really don't think that they would say "No" to your proposal necessarily. Everyone has seen what happened when creatures were available to everyone, and there's certainly no reason to think that DEs are special in their ability to reason forward from precedent.
Boy, it was fun to have creatures everywhere for a while. But after seeing what it did to the game, I'm ready to give them up. I'm ready to let creatures and creature combat be the sole responsibility of the Creature Handlers (except for mounts, and my trusty nuna!).
I'm not saying that this DE-combat-droid thing is the exact same deal, I'm just saying that while everyone has a tiny little bit (or more of greed), I've seen plenty of evidence that the community at large absolutely has the best interests of the game at heart.
Yeah, you'll get some people saying "U suck, driods 4 all, DEs greedy", and it will be totally pot-kettle-black, but a pretty drastic change that affects everyone ought to be vetted first.
All I'm suggesting is that your opponents might beat you to the punch in getting the dialogue moving to the punch in SWG Discussion.
The best-best of all possible worlds would be to take the most vocal people on either side, write up the pros and cons, limit to 250 words on either side, and post to SWG discussion.
That would be the single most impressive sign of solidarity, intelligence, and equity to come out of these forums, and I'd love to see it come from Droid Engineers...
