Thread: Why are you a DE?

I've just mastered Artisan, and I'm now thinking about what crafting prof to move to, DE being the leader. It sounds fun to be building all these droids, like a hack in a garage. Selling them and their associated parts (batteries, paint kits etc), is of course important as a vendor DE. My alt is an aspiring BH, so I hope to build detonators and BH droids as well.

My question is, are you a DE for self service, or are you in it to sell? I understand this isn't a big money making prof, but is it self-sustainable? Do you break even? I ask in reference to whether I should pick up a second crafting prof, or go for combat, which I'd rather not do, I want a crafting toon and a combat one to experience different content.

I can personally say this is my second go around with DE. It is definitely not a money maker. I have come back to it to make a handfull of droids for fun. (My alt makes the real money and is combat oriented).

I personally enjoy making droids and that is the prime reason I'm back into it. Most droids have limited functionality and never decay so no repeat business. Do it for the love of it and just understand that there are many, many other ways (crafting or non) to make credits.

That's my 2 cents from personal xp.

I love Droids, and I figured it would never be a competative as WS or AS.

I'm in it for the idea. I like droids. I like playing with them and occasionally selling them when chance permits. But its never been a moneymaker for me. For a while I worked hard at selling droids and I sort of made money. But eventually I felt the need for more credits and I became an Architech. Sadly I mastered that class in a month, no grinding, and made more money in that month than all my profits from DE.

I'd suggest you pick up a second crafting profession. Use that profession to make money and have fun as a DE.

DEs are DEs beacuse welove making droids. There isn't really any other reason that holds water. Other crafting professions make more money and have repeat business, others are more useful... infact they are usually both.

I'm a DE because I just can't get enough of explaining things to someone for an hour just to make a 20,000 credit sale.

"I need a droid."

"What kind of droid would you like?"

"I don't know."

"What do you want it to do?"

"What can they do?"

"Lots of stuff. There's different kinds of modules that serve different purposes."

"What kinds are there?"

I'm a DE, first and foremost, I have no combat alt supporting me. I love the profession, and I love the business aspect. I make almost all of my money with droid sales, have some secondary incomeselling resources. JTL has given me anice boost, I had my first Million dollar day over the week-end! was very nice As with most things, the amount of work you put in, will directly affect the amount of return you get.

As a quick snapshot, in the 5 months i've been playing, i've managed to get myself a number of storage houses, multiples of all the loot kits, 5 factories pumping parts continuously, about 50 static harvesters, and 20 from friends that I use for the current great resources. Plus a few million resources sitting around, waiting to be used (or sold.. hehe). I've managed to get over 10 mil in the bank, but it's still not enuf to buy myself that damn Nightsister Bicep armband thing! I guess the question is how much money is enough? If you want hundreds of millions, being an uber chef, or armoursmith is the way to go... but you'll have to put as much if not more time into it than you would DE. If your like me, love droids, but also wanna be comfortably well off in the game, then you can definatly make it as a DE.

What has really made DE fun for me, and what I didn't know about when i went this route, is jetpack crafting!!! I've been on many organized DWB (Death Watch Bunker) runs now, and have crafted 6 out of the 8 known jetpacks (I even got one for myself! Woot!) on my server. This has been by far the most intense fun i've had yet, and I hope everyone here get's a chance to craft a jetpack, or some mando armour during their gameplay!

I became a Droid Engineer so I could make combat droids, and with them, along with my Creature Handler pets, I could make an army to CONQUER THE WORLD!!!

And then I realized that we had not-so-good combat droids, but I really liked the possibilities of our utility droids.

Then I left, because SoE was going in the direction of Droid Handler, and I came back about a month and a half ago to discover that Droid Handler wasn't being talked about, most of the droid modules I wanted were implemented (and then some) and the combat droids were made better.

I still like our utility droids though. My main droid is a WED Treadwell droid with a Droid crafting station. I had a buddy in game remark "Droids making droids?!!" hehe.

Anyways, I never really got into it for the business. Tho it is nice when someone asks me if I can make a droid, and they actually want something that I can make (I am not Master). But I did it to make droids for myself to perform tasks for me, or to help me in combat.

Well my story is this....

I was realativly new to the game when a small group of us borke off to start our own guild, the plan was to have one of each crafting profession. Not knowing anything about moneymakers or crafting professions, I was all over being a Droid Engineer. I mean what could be cooler then making Droids?

Now the reasons I stay a DE are.

1. Droids are fun, I like the options. Anybody can explain Armor or Weapons, but it takes more then just xp to be a real MASTER Droid Engineer. You need to know your stuff.

2. I love having a business. Customer base, vendors, stock, orders, supply and demand. It is a lot of fun.

3. Money. I support all of my accounts from being a DE, yes even my Doc and Combatent. All told before expenses, I have probably made 75 million from Droid sales. More then half of that went back into resources though. While that seems like a lot (it is,) you need to realise that I probably spend 40+ hours a week on droids. Every single one of my Droids is the best the server can make. Yes you can make money doing that, you just need to accept that for your work, you wont make as much as other professions. If I spent 40+ hours a week making maxed armor, I would have hundreds of millions. So while money motivates me some, I stick with it because Droids are cool.

I tend to agee with Warryyr.I can sometimes usually spend an hour+ explaining a single droid, and thats before I even make the sale.

But on my galaxy, no one gets that personal with their customers. You get to meet some of the best people on your galaxy just to sell some droids.
